Where is the Infinite Staircase?

I never got ahold of "The Infinite Staircase" module when it came out. I'm in the process of acquiring everything I didn't get for Planescape on eBay (In the 90's I was in middle school and high school, but I did get a few things then).

ANYWAY, I think it will be a while before I get that module. Could someone tell me where the Staircase is suppose to actually be?

I'm familiar with the concept of it after reading the materials on mimir.net and the stuff you all are working on here.

Is it a Demi-plane? That seems to make the most sense to me at the moment.

All of the other Planar Pathways are "somewhere", the two rivers run across the various outer planes, the tree is on a plane, the mountain is on a plane, but this staircase is just described as a random staircase "somewhere" that has 85 billion portals Smiling.

Or is the actual location of the staircase itself never revealed?

Its base resides in Ysgard in the domain of several deities, including Selune of the Faerunian pantheon. It appears there in a regular cycle IIRC.

The staircase is almost a plane unto itself, with each of the doors at its landings leading to other planes across the planes. Perhaps it was created by some long forgotten race, some now dead or vanished god, perhaps the unknown species that littered the planes of Pelion/Mithardir with nameless ruins and artifacts of obscene power. Perhaps the stair isn't finished, but is still and forever being built.

I can't say, but damn if it's not interesting and though provoking. Smiling

Where is the Infinite Staircase?

The Infinite Staircase has a beachhead of sorts in the Gates of the Moon (Selune's Realm), but it continues into infinity; hence the name. Think of it as a "place between places", much like the Astral. The backstage of the multiverse, where they keep all the spare doors. Smiling I like to think of it as the "maintenance floor" of the portal system.

The other planar pathways exist on planes but also traverse them. Mount Olympus reaches from the heights of Arborea to the depths of Hades (and Tartarus, technically). The Infinite Staircase is a sort of limbo dimension, and so is not physically present on any plane but does traverse all of them. It can be reached via portals, of course.

If it's anywhere, I'd say the Staircase exists in the Plane of Dreams. It reaches to those places in the multiverse activated by the creativity of sentient minds.

Do abyssal Janitors lurk in the shadows, watching my every step?

Cool, so it has a plane where it all begins, and then it goes off into it's own "crazy dimension" not ever touching another plane again except for through it's 78 billion portals. I think I got it now.

Thanks.

Where is the Infinite Staircase?

In my campaign, the Infinite Staircase physically occupies the inside of the Spire on the Outlands, which is why the greatest concentration of Aoskar's worshippers were in Sigil (floating above the Spire), and why the Planewalker's Guild moved from Sigil to the Infinite Staircase. I consider the Infinite Staircase the last vestige of Aoskar's power, which is why he still lies dormant on the Astral Plane and why his clerics can still gain spells. While Selune and her shards may use the Infinite Staircase, Selune didn't create it. (Again, in my campaign.)

And what of the lillendi? Do they still watch over the Infinite Staircase? With the shifting of the Staircase from the Gates of the Moon to the Spire, I doubt they would have much of a place now...

The lillendi are outsiders indelibly tied to creativity and creative works, so they use the Infinite Staircase quite a bit. I didn't change anything that was written about the Infinite Staircase...you can still get into it from Selune's realm, and the doors still open onto places of creativity. I simply placed it physically in a place I thought was appropriate. To date, no one in game has ever discovered its physical location, and I don't know that anyone would really care (except the Athar, since they're camped right outside the Spire).

Who knows... Perhaps some Athar will respond curiously to the fact that the Staircase opens at the Spire. They may interpret it as a means of finding THEIR way to the Great Unknown...
