I never got ahold of "The Infinite Staircase" module when it came out. I'm in the process of acquiring everything I didn't get for Planescape on eBay (In the 90's I was in middle school and high school, but I did get a few things then).
ANYWAY, I think it will be a while before I get that module. Could someone tell me where the Staircase is suppose to actually be?
I'm familiar with the concept of it after reading the materials on mimir.net and the stuff you all are working on here.
Is it a Demi-plane? That seems to make the most sense to me at the moment.
All of the other Planar Pathways are "somewhere", the two rivers run across the various outer planes, the tree is on a plane, the mountain is on a plane, but this staircase is just described as a random staircase "somewhere" that has 85 billion portals .
Or is the actual location of the staircase itself never revealed?
Its base resides in Ysgard in the domain of several deities, including Selune of the Faerunian pantheon. It appears there in a regular cycle IIRC.
The staircase is almost a plane unto itself, with each of the doors at its landings leading to other planes across the planes. Perhaps it was created by some long forgotten race, some now dead or vanished god, perhaps the unknown species that littered the planes of Pelion/Mithardir with nameless ruins and artifacts of obscene power. Perhaps the stair isn't finished, but is still and forever being built.
I can't say, but damn if it's not interesting and though provoking.
