yeah you must have posted after I hit submit the first time by accident rather than add option under the poll part.
What is your favorite 3rd edition Monter Manual?
I know I am going to forget some that I should include but here goes. Just got the idea when I was browsing around thinking about whether I should add any 3rd edition monster books to the 2 I own. Monster Manual (3.0), and Creature Collection.
3.5 Monster Manual, Core Rulebook III.
What the 3.0 MM should have been-- and at the cost of about 30 extra pages, it could easily have been what MM3.0 and SS combined were supposed to accomplish.
Fiend Folio, I adore everything about the Etherguant & Kaorti.
Fiend Folio - it's all about the nipples on the cover. (No - seriously - there are three of them. Pierced. Go look.)
On a more realistic note - half fey, fey touched and the like in the F. Folio. I've got a thing for fey.
Is the 3.5 MM such a massive upgrade over the 3.0 one? I mean I have the 3.0 one and recently upgraded my Players Handbook and DM's guide to 3.5 because I got a great deal from a friend who never used them. Won them for DMing a few Convention RPGs and then literally opened them once in a year so he sold them to me at a great price... Anyway so I was thinking I wouldn't actually upgrade to MM 3.5 are there any good reasons why I should reconsider?
The fiends got a lot stronger. And I personally like the new DR rules.
Pants of the North!
Hmm so do you think those improvements are enough to warrant droping the cash buying the 3.5 version? Say instead of Fiend Folio, Planar Handbook, MM II or III, or something like Libis Mortis (the new undead book)?
Not when you can just print it from the SRD, though the illustrations are purdy.
Fiend Folio most definitely. I refer to this 3e monster D&D tome more than any other simply because most of the planar critters inside are well detailed and there's always one or two ideas I can draw from the book for my campaigns.
Following closely, is the Monster Manual II, again basically because of the high content of planes creatures that are covered.
I've got MM1 and 2, planning on buying a third supplement - probably either mm3 or fiend folio. Is the folio a better buy then?
I just purchased the Fiend Folio it looked like a much better choice for planar campaigns then MM2 or MM3. I don't have a detailed review on either of those yet but in the hour I was down there reading through MM2, MM3, Planar Handbook, Fiend Folio and Libis Mortis (new undead book). Ultimently my new purchase was the Fiend Folio and I will have a review posted for editing by the end of the week on the Folio.
Already I have submitted reviews for editing of Deities and Demigods, Beyond Countless Doorways, Creature Collection, and Monster Manual I (3.0).
I assume that in general the CRs in FF are towards the higher end of the scale? Or is there a good mix? I have just started a new campaign, going straight from epic level encounters back to pretty low stuff...
Umm I haven't dug that deeply into it yet but I have heard the Fiend Folio does tend towards the high end of things.
I actually just got done reviewing the Creature Collection and first Monster Maunal. I found the creature collection had some pretty cool creatures in it for using out on the planes. Most of them tended to be on the lower challenge ratings that I liked. Mostly either 1-4 or 5-8. My review of it should be online soon or pm me if you want the breakdown before it gets through the editing process here.
So in summary if you want low level encounters I would at least take a look at Sword and Sorcery's Creature Collection book.
Although the new Fiend Folio is good, I always liked the original 1st Edition one for the sheer horror of the black-and-white illustrations. They're awfully creepy and set the standard for depictions of the githyanki, githzerai and slaadi.
The old Planescape monstrous compendiums blow the new monster books outta the water in both illustration style and content. The new books barely manage a blurb about what the monster is outside of combat, while the old ones where so long they had short stories embedded in them.
[sips the bittersweet wine of nostalgia some more]
Yes I agree compleltly about the 3 PS Monster Supplements being so great. Big reason the New 3E ones will be useful is that I don't have to covert and make calls the long way from the 2E ones.
But there are certainly a few cool even with the short flavor text that are nice additions in some of the new 3E monster manuals. Also the new line of exact Monster Books looks great. The Draconum (Dragons) and Libis Mortis (undead) look very very good for flavor with some stats. So the 3rd one coming out on out on Mind Flayors, and Beholders hopefully will be as good. Plus you can plug that right into PS.
Really? From a casual browse, I didn't see much flavor in the Libris Mortis at all.
Draconum is very good - I've not looked at Libris Mortis at all...
I only spent like 10 minutes glancing at it myself. Haven't really read it in depth. Seemed from the contents the last large section on bringing undead into your campaign was flavor stuff but I didn't do much then skim a few pages I mostly looked at the monsters in there.
I just finished and submitted my review of Fiend Folio to the editors and it may shock everyone as it did me to find lots of good low to mid level Challenge Ratings in the book. In fact its very balanced in my mind giving creatures for the full gambit of adventures.
My 3 reviews in the pipe are all Monster Manuals which are Monster Manual I (3.0), Creature Collection, and now the Fiend Folio.
Check out my other reviews as well on Deities and Demigods plus Beyound Countless Doorways. Don't be afraid to post comments or give me ratings on my reviews good or bad!
Err... "in before poll, yo"?
I like the 3.0 MMI myself. MMmmm, delicious basics.
