If any illustrator/person who can actually draw (unlike me) would be interested in doing so, I would love to see illustrations of Tamer Creed mind flayers. For those who don't have copies of the Illithiad, they tend to be the front-line defenders of illithid communities, and (unlike most other mind flayers) specialize in physical combat, the better to deal with githyanki/zerai incursions and enemies that are resistant to mind blasts or brain extraction (i.e., undead, oozes, the psionically aware, those of unusually strong will). However, I offer no compensation for such illustrations other than "Wow! That's neat!"

Any kind of armor would work for such an illustration, with the following guidelines: Illithid armor is usually weird, and illithid armor generally includes some protection for the tentacles along with the rest of the body (though such armor would never prevent the tentacles from being used in combat). Some examples of illithid armor from various sourcebooks include: unusually lightweight plate armor (due to a combination of their generally superior 'technology' and ability of some of their crafters to psionically imbue items), light armor that literally bonds physically to the wearer's flesh and muscle, or even full exoskeletons. (But you can decide to draw totally different armor, too.) Almost any weapon/s would work also.

It will be interesting to see what will other cook up.
I hawe three questions: is there time limit for this task or not, what is it for just for fun or something else and do you want it black and white or in color?
Anyways, it is interesting idea for drawing.

No time limit, just for fun, and either black and white or color is fine. Smiling

Oooh. Nasty, jungle-dwelling illithids.

Edit: The more I look at that picture, the more impressed I am. The details on that armor...!

Probably the "Of Darkest Gray" forum, though here might work too.

Did I mention that picture came out even weirder than I thought it would?

Edit (again): And that nautiloid-ish design for the helmet? Ingenious!

These last few pics are really marvelous and I really like the way your style is advancing with water color. Check out The Sculptress in this post.

You should practice a bit more of comicbook like shading (much mour of black parts) in my opinion, four our future pet project, but that's another story entirely...

I actually like the lighter lines vs. strong comic-style linear work, but could see a need for greater value contrast in your colors. Basically use deeper shadows and brighter highlights, and really explore the range you have available to you. Smiling

That said - I adore this piece, it really is excellent work. Smiling

Is it wrong to think that "Tastes Great, Less Filling" would make a nice caption for the pic?

For this one or for the Hags illustration? I could see it going both ways. . .

Yes, color is definitly something I need to work some more, after all I had only recently have started truely experimenting with coloring.

I'd like to thank you all for your comments and support it is great ego boost in this hard times of xmas carze and shopping spreas (I work at comic shop and there we have Pandemonium, Abyss, Limbo and Ysgard in 8 square meters every day).

:help!!:
Enough of whining, time for yet another Artist comment:
When I was drawing this Ilithid firstly I wanted something something original (that is one standard I want to satisfy on every picture), so I was guided by 2 main ideas: what would uniforms of Ilithid guards on spelljamers look like? Since the Ilithid spelljamers are in shape of nautilus that was main idea for helmet shape. Smiling
Secondly, idea for the armour: Ilithids are clever oportunistic beings, so they dont hesitate from stealing other tehnologies from other species. For this armour idea was that unusual grell alchemy used for growing crystals. So for this crystaline armour ilithids probably used similar tehniques only on psionic crystals.

Thirdly: that weird worm thing Ilithid have instead of arm is probably some sort of graft created from grick and ilithid tadpole.

Ilithid is carrying psyonic spear, more as accessory and decoration rather than weapon (since the main wepon of ilithid is their tentacles), but sometimes you need to keep your enemies at bay and spear is perfect for that.

Finaly grimlock in the lover left part of the picture is there to fill space (and to assist its master in combat).
I have also put grimlock in picture as one other idea I recently had: you know that new story that Ilihids came fleeing from distant future where most suns are allready snuffed, so maybe grimlocks also came with Ilithids from that dark future to this time: blind slave race descended from humanoids (humans prehaps) adapted to live in universe without light. Think Morlocks from H.G.Wells Time Machine, only compleatly blind. Laughing out loud

Yes, it maybe sound's cool (and it is in normal circumstances) but you'll reconsider after you hear this: there is the battle between Law and Chaos on dayly basis between my 2 bosses: one is wery organised and tidy, and other is somewhat iressponsible comic dragon (he is literary hoarding comics in shop, so people are bearly walkig between mountains of comics), secondly my work colegue has worst of Doomguard, Bleakers and Dustman combined in his life outlook (doom and gloom and all that), I mean he is good man and he did have some difficulties in life but sometime he is just difficult to handle...
And thirdly there are customers, I should not claw/claw/bite hands that feed us (stole that from order of stick Smiling ) but here in Croatia people still think that comics are cheap kiddie stuff rather than expensive hobbie (and, mind me, we are cheapest comic shop in city), so they are asking discounts on comics that would in cost in America 1$ or less, (bloody cheek of some people). :x

Sorry for the rant, deviating from post and whining about my dayly problems, after all there is no point to fuss about things you cannot afect in any way (the way my bosses are running the shop), except wenting the steam sometimes... (that's why we have D&D, RPGs, movies, comics and computer games gods bless them)
One more time sorry I had to put you all trough all this...

The 2e module "Dawn of the Overmind" contains a description of an odd item called a vibrissagauntlet. Basically, you stick your (preferably 4-fingered hand) in it, issue a command thought, and it grows tentacles that can be used to attack and/or extract brains. An illithid with one of these on would have a nutty number of attacks per round.

@ Zimzarim: Realy ?!

I guess that was whiff of Astral wind that was blowing in my head when I was drawing this, since I never had "Dawn of Overmind" in my hands. Smiling

Oh well, it is to be expected that ilithitds have found new ways to extract brains more quickly.
