**Hear Ye and Eyeball This, Basher** Announcing a new and wonderous invention in gaming.  An adventure where the player characters { THA'S YOU } are not adventurers.  Too incredible to believe?  Nay, you will be playing artists, performers, craftsmen, and other working stiffs trying to pay the rent in that most amazing nexus of the multiverse, scenic Sigil.  Just average planars with above-average amounts of creativity which find that most incredible of instuments, that most salacious of stages, that most calamitous of canvases, the planes!

Rules (as they are, subject to change at whim)

ECL 7 ... ish.  Charactes should be artists, bards, experts, etc, spending lots of skill points in craft and performance skills.  Out-of-box thinking encouraged.  The DM {that's me} trusts all players to roll their own dice in character creation as they see fit, but the point of the game is fluff, not crunch.

Items are available in a three by three fashion.  Three major, wonderous item-type or a weapon if character concept calls for it.  Three medium power items, possibly a weapon, a secondary weapon, or something that helps AC.  Three minor magic items, "crunch" items like healing potions, minor weapons of no more than +1, whatever.

Combat, specificly, is NOT an aim of this game.  It might happen, this is Sigil after all, but it will not take center stage.

This board will be used to brainstorm character concepts.  Post a copy of final character sheets here, so everyone can see how smart, creative, and hansome you are.

This board will also be used for general out-of-character conversation, letters to the editor, sports, gossip, love letters, horoscopes, word problems, and other various herefore unsuspected verbage.

Hmmm, I've got a couple of ideas but first -

Any alignment/materials restrictions? Shadow fiends make great art but do we want to go there?

Does the creation of specialised undead creatures/ living grafts constitute art?

How loosely can we play with crafting rules? Can you speak an object into existence by naming it accurately enough?

Answers:

1 = "plays well with others" is a good alignment restriction.  Few if any materials restrictions.  Shadow fiends?  Go wherever your imagination takes you.

2 = What is art?  Watever the artist says art is.  What is good art?  Whatever the audience says it is.

3 = A good Signer could probably true-name something into existance.  I'll be pretty loose with wondeous item creation.

Anyone have any ideas what sort of major wondrous items would be fitting as hammer and chisel for a ghost sculptor? I'd like them to create pretty much anything, so something based on conjuration and/or illusionary effects seem fitting...

Wand of long-lasting

Wand of long-lasting illusions?  It could create up to three major illusions at a time, with a duration of one day.

EDIT: Even better, duration of illusions is "until dispelled" but no more than three distinct illusions at a time.  Size and realness of the illusions should be pretty big, but a visual and a sound efffect count as two illusions.

Well, when a ghost is formed its equipment becomes incorporeal with it, along with some items it particularly valued in life (incl hammer and chisel in this case). But I guess it would be practical to have some gear that affects corporeal creatures as well...

Book of Azure's Brain. Wink

An actual hammer and set of chisels would be cooler than a wand.  He literally scupts an illusion.

Idea for the illusions; silent illusions only.  Three illusions going at a time, and if they do not move do not require concentration to maintain.  You can choose which illusion disipates if you want to make a new one, of course.  An illusion can be made 'real' by using two "charges" of the items.  A 'real' illusion, though still silent, is fully corporeal, and (temporarily at least) actually made of whatever material you wish to represent, in context of the sculpture.  Exotic materials, anything less mundane than rock, wood, or iron requires a third "charge".  Thus, to make something out of steel, an alloy, a precious metal or precious stone, it requires the full power of the Hammer and Chisels.  Correspondigly rarer materials have maximum sizes for the mateial able to be produced.  You could 'sculpt' an adamantite mace, or a diamond the size of a skull, but super exotic materials only a dagger or other small item.  Complex items like clocks would also require the third "charge"

Whatever your character's former affiliation, I could see the Signers, the Dustmen, and the Sensates all try to (re?) recruit him.  Perhaps some believe that eventually at some point, your spirit will merge with the Hammer and Chisels and the Faction will gain posession (pun) of a unique and powerful artifact.

Actually it has nothing to do with Halloween, just superficially looks the same, in that kids walk around singing songs for candy with lampions, nor with easter, lol, my mistake, its a heathen ritual of some sort originally, but as so often, the church managed to subvert the original meaning.. Hey Azure, would it be ok

Hey Azure, would it be ok if I tinkered a little with the Artificer class skills (and possibly an ability). I'm thinking of making it a bit more 'biology focussed (think the Rhul-Thuan from Dark Sun)

Basically I'd trade off the device & lock finding/disabling skills and abilities and trading them for animal handling, heal and empathy making the class more 'bio-engineer' rather than 'mechanical-engineer'.

Otherwise I was considering a either a smith/sculptor type artificer or a Sand-shaper (sandstorm) Doomguard.

I've got a few other ideas but I'm not sure how to make them work within a game (eg. a Chaosman/Anarchist beguiler 'public artist' whose medium is free-willed people - spread the right rumours, incite the right groups and watch them come together in a grand, public display or a fiendish musician whose instrument of choice is the tortured screams of their victims - very popular in bars catering to a lower-planar clientele)

Yup, that's one of the reasons I want to make 'heal' a class skill. Otherwise I couldn't take the class until way later and I'd have a lot of useless and out-of-character mechanical skill. This way works better and (I hope) still keeps in the character of the class.

I'll get to building tomorrow. How do you feel about me adapting some 2e Dark Sun life-shaped objects into 3e? I'll try to keep the changes to be mostly fluff.

All right, here are my two

All right, here are my two pitches so far. Both are elemental in nature. When one deals with the Great Wheel on a daily basis, one can often develop a fondness for the other parts of the Multiverse. I prefer more active performance like dancing, acrobatics and so on, so I am trying to figure out how to incorporate that into my two ideas below, before I settle on one.

Idea 1: A sort of glassblower, except he creates elemental sculptures. Instead of glass, he blows fire or water to create exotic, delicate forms that can be displayed just like blown glass.

Idea 2: A musician who plays "elemental strings" by plucking the flow of elements around him. Each element has a different sound and tone, and when he pulls the string, it manifests as a visible "string" of elemental power (so, a "string" of fire or water). The musician has developed this to create not only a musical performance but a fascinating visual performance of light and elemental energy.

Do something else then.  To be perfectly honest, your original character idea seemed a bit ... static.  I was hip to the concept, but he struck me as a bloke with too many resposibilities to go running around Sigil with a bunch of other artists.

Tell ya what, if you come up with another concept, maybe even a related one, I'll work in your Ghaele 'pimp' as a side-PC.

Same to any other players; if you have two ideas and can't decide, make two characters.  You will probably only be allowed to play one at a time most of the time, but the other can make a cameo every now and then.  Heck, one thing I love about DMing is NPC creation, why should I have all the fun?

 Does the character have

Does the character have to be a Ghaele or could you get away with a tweaked Half-Celestial elf? Azure seems to be ammenable to modified stuff so long as it's in character.

Speaking of races I was considering playing a Grig for a while there. I suppose I still could but his grafts would be very, very small. I was also tossing around the idea of an awakened spider crafting items from its webs or a Thri Kreen which had been experimenting with it's dasl production.

There was a mantis-like

There was a mantis-like race in Spelljammer that secialized in organic modification, but I forget the name.  They had a write-up in a Dragon magazine a while back that was really interesting.  Basicly they could modify themselves and others, add extra limbs, etc.  The intersting thing was of course they were limited by non-magical physics, so if you, say, wanted to fly, you might wake up from the operation with your arms modified into a thirty-foot wingspan and your digestive system modified to deal with pound after pound of high-protien insect life, which by the way are your diet now.

Self-modification was a major cultural thing, not only for practical purposes but also for fashion.  Tatoos, piercings, modified limbs and carapices were the norm.

If you want to go for it, you could find out the name & stats, or use a Thri-kreen as your template and call it close enough.

BTW life-shaped items are cool by me, Athasian-style or not.

Hmm, maybe. I'm trying to figure out a motivation at the moment and that'll decide on the race I choose. At the moment I'm considering a half Delkyr (Magic of Ebberon) or a tiefling or something who is trying to understand themselves by mixing other creatures. I'm thinking his day to day job will be animal breeding and husbandry (mage-bred animals cost extra) and creating grafts and unique creatures as special orders.

Oho, Athas.  Would an

Oho, Athas.  Would an Athasian Prime be acceptable?  If I maintain the elemental bent of my concept, Athas, with its elemental priests, might be a good point of origin.

Failing that, I will likely make my character a genasi of some kind, depending on the concept I go for.  The musician-acrobat is more immediately visually appealing, but an elemental sculptor of a sort would create more long-lasting works of art.

Skill points willing, I may be able to do both, depending on class.

Perhaps he has a set of rings that let him form the strings he plays, strings which fly from his fingertips during performances like puppet strings attached to his rings.  And the same strings allow him to create the "blown glass" art.

I've got a great idea for a character.  He's a druid who specializes in finding and training Xong-Yongs to produce music.  He uses a whole slew of Handle Animal techniques to very carefully produce deep, thunderous performances as his pets fly about him.  His largest and best trained is capable of such deep and powerful notes that the audience can feel the vibrations through every inch of their bodies.

Now, now, that wasn't very nice!

I'll have to polish my forehead ridges again.

And ponder character concepts.  Perhaps I am being terribly self-conscious but I feel as though my ideas are considerably inferior and uninteresting compared to others presented here.  It is difficult to force the concepts when they do not simply flow from my mind.

lol, now, now, dont worry

lol, now, now, dont worry about concepts being adequate, pick the one or two you like most and develope them, as i did, and with help from references here in this thread i have even evolved it, by remembering an old character concept i played for several years in an Athasian campaign... so i choose to use it again with a twist.

Please feel free to borrow

Please feel free to borrow from any of mine (except for the life-shaper and possibly the sand-shaper) I'd take it as a massive compliment! Hey, what's the point of this thread if not to share ideas!

Well, primarily I am trying to come up with ideas to improve upon the character concept(s) I already posed.

I'm considering the idea of a sort of chef-bard... a combination of Iron Chef and Swedish Chef plus musical accompaniment.  Hmm...
