The bonds of Good, Evil, Chaos, and Law . . .

I was thinking today, as I am known to do from time to time, about the layout of the planes, belief, and all of that stuff.

Is the bond of good stronger than that of the bond of order?

Would Lawful Celestials ally with Lawful Fiends if order was at stake?

Both sides would be equally aware of the treacheries/qualities of the other side of course.

I know the "traditional" view is that Good wouldn't ally with Evil, but has anyone ever played with the notion of the celestials and fiends allying in any of their games. I know that some random celestials here and there support this or that side of the blood war just to cause more fiends to die or whatever reason they may have (there are plenty of reasons presented, a few examples are in Uncaged: Faces of Sigil), but I'm thinking of a situation more outside of the Blood War (even though it is always going on).

I'm just curious.

Yes, I think they certainly might get together, in certain situations, if the threat were serious enough. I can't imagine that they would like it very much though, and I think that the alliance would fall apart as soon as the threat were ended.

Personally I do believe that there is a posability of Fiends and Celestials allying, there have been several times where we've had good and Lawful alingned PCs and NPCs fighting on the Baatazus side... I'd actually love to see that happen, it would most definately turn the tides of the Blood War

Well, Dungeon #119 recently had an adventure called the Tomb of Aknar Ratella in which devils and celestials joined forces to destroy a religion-hating warlord on a prime world. Apparently he crimped their styles by slaughtering all clerics, good and evil, in his domains. So, yes, I guess it's possible, but I think in general the bonds of good/evil are stronger than those of law/chaos. The latter is mostly a strong dose of Moorcock in D&D. In the past the idea of chaos was strongly associated with evil and law with goodness. Only in D&D are they on separate axes with equal weight.
