So... when exactly did they get actual swords for arms... is that a 3e thing? I thought they were just guys with beaklike noses and wings instead of arms. And if they were, originally, just that, then why were they called Sword Archons. Am I missing something?

They were originally, in the 1e Manual of the Planes, described as humanoids with wings and the heads of cats. They had arms, and used them to carry swords as weapons, and acted as the weapon arms of the higher-ranking celestials.

They were illustrated this way in the 2e Monstrous Compendium Outer Planes Appendix.

Tony DiTerlizzi drew them a completely different way, humanoids with beaklike noses and no arms. I don't know why - probably it seemed like a good idea at the time. Bizarrely, they still had a bite attack, which made sense when they had cat heads but's just weird when their mouths look human.

In the 3.5 edition Book of Exalted Deeds, they were reimagined a second time as winged humanoids with fiery swords as arms. I like this version the best.

Well some outsiders have weapons who are actually part of his body, why a sword archon can not have swords as arms?

It's not as bad as the lantern archons, who have lanterns for arms. Or the throne archons, lugging around a pair of thrones in place of arms. How they even fluff up the cushions is beyond me...Eye-wink

Christian angels allways had unusuall look: flaming wheels, and 7 eyed winged srpents etc... One guy with sword arms is not that unusuall, it could be worse:

Trumpet Archons who are great to have if your car horn is broken (trumpet hands, kinky) and there are Hound Archons who have hounds instead arms, or Warden Archons who have jails instead hands. (this mental picture is getting too scary, sickening and disturbing to continue and now is time to take my medicine, so I will stop). Nyar!!!

Lolz. I have a complete incompatability between my artistic desires and my artistic skills. I just wish I could draw an archon with lanterns and thrones for arms.

As for the actual answer to my question, thanks rip. I know next to nothing about 1e (or, indeed, much of 2e outside of Planescape) so I sometimes cannot follow the logic of such things.

Ok, it is time to turn the old What If Machine on and see what would Archons look if their names were taken literally.

Here it goes (SFX: Whooosh, whooosh, whooosh, chaka, chaka, ka-cing):

Hmmm, that ended rather well, usaly machine blows into my face, anyways enjoy. Me go sleep now. Nyar!

Hehehe. Nice. I particularly like the expression on the Hound Archon's face.

I must admit that the Hound Archon kind of reminds me of Triumph the Insult Dog.

My fav' is trumpet archon, his commentary is pure sarcasm.

@Squaff: Sorry for the delay at uploading them, I've could have done it the next day after you brought them to be scanned(I'm such a lazy bum).

Sorry for the back on-topick thingy, but I remembered some cool looking angels from Magic the Gathering art.
They were missing arms as well and had them either replaced by another set of hands or their bodies looked like a floating rob with a silver mask instead of heads and three pairs of wings(my memory's a bit blurry).
I've just read the topic a little more cautiously.
There are some wierd angel pictures in Engel RPG (played in d20 system).

Aw... I can't believe I missed them! Seems they're over bandwidth now, or something.
