pokes head in

Okay, I'm back. There was a combination of, first the winter holidays, then dayjob stuff. At any rate, it seems to have hit for everyone about the same time it did for me, so I'm (kinda) glad to see plot hasn't run off without me.

I concluded a different campaign today, so I'm gamed out at the moment. I'll post in the next day or so.

Great, I'm glad to hear someone's back, I was getting a bit worried there.

And Zim, I'll give BoGR a look. Can't promise I'll play a Gith Pirate though (what with Githyanki pirates being so much cooler and all...).

Hey, for everybody's info, the last thing I want is to be monopolizing the plot direction. I'm getting a vibe that a thing or two I've been trying recently hasn't been considered a good idea by one or more players, and if that's the case, well, if I've just posted something, feel free to interrupt Zhegre or suggest an alternative. This ain't Russia, nobody died and made him Putin. :^)

eh, I've been pretty happy with the way things have been going. Kadar's been quiet because anything I would have had him say would seem redundant.

Its cool, it just seemed appropriate for Polp to be a little unsettled with openly discussing the whole save-the-world deal, considering their experience with the rilmani and the notion of local spies.

Further, considering his history with Zhegre, it seems reasonable that he would put an immense amount of trust in the dwarf.

Ho hum, anybody there?

Anyway, I promised I'd drop a note with the list of spells I would have been more likely to prepare heading into a city rather than expecting a day in the wilderness. This is something at least a little like it, so instead of the usual on my 3edb charsheet I'll assume Zhegre has the following available today:

0: Detect Magic, Light, Mending, Purify Food and Drink, Read Magic
1: Bless, Comprehend Languages, Detect Evil, Entropic Shield + Burning Hands
2: Augury, Calm Emotions, Hold Person, blank spell slot + Produce Flame
3: Dispel Magic, Locate Object, blank spell slot + Magic Vestment

The "+" spells are, of course, domain choices.

Sorry for the long absence, guys.

I’ve been writing on many projects lately relating to both studies and gaming, which might have put me into a sort of writer’s block lately. One thing that’s currently draining my creativity a lot is preparing the “final sessions” for a three year running campaign with my local group, along with a particularly tough course I’m following.

At any rate, I’m back now and will read up on the game and post very soon.

Poke. Again.

Look. Duckluck. You're the GM, okay? If you're waiting for people to post, you don't have to wait any longer than you want to. Institute a ruling: if we don't post between last GM post and the next one, we're assumed to be (a) doing same as last round or (b) quietly following along. Otherwise, forum games take

FOREVER.

We might have all picked up on that by now.

So gimme a rundown on the common knowledge (among professional spellcasters, especially elemental-themed guys like myself) for summoned elementals on the Planes. I remember in 2e elementals on the Planes were pseudoelementals, animated stuff of the local plane rather than something summoned from the Inner Planes. That seems to be what you're going for here, I dig that, but how often does one ever encounter such a pseudoelemental somewhere other than its home plane? Is it known but uncommon, unheard of, or what? Can someone with a penchant for Abyssal spells summon Abyssal pseudoelementals to bordering planes? How freaked out should Zhegre be? :^)

These are mostly just straight elementals, but it's odd that they're on the Outer Planes at all. They basically can't have gotten there naturally (unless there's a portal to Fire nearby), and they don't look like they were summoned straight from Fire anyway. There's something weird going on here, that's all I'll tell you.

I lost track of this game following the continuing efforts to switch servers. Now that I know where to look to find the site again, I'll do my best to get it going again. Sorry to anyone who's been waiting for me.

Duckluck, I suggest moving the game on on a regular basis, regardless of whether every player has posted since your last post.

Since he hasn't posted in BogR either I think Azriael has yet to discover that Planewalker is back up, but I don't think he'd mind us having delved a bit further by the time he returns.

Sorry, I didn't see Weishan's post and thought I was still waiting on two people. I've posted now. Hopefully Azriael will come back soon. He's the only player who's been with me since the beginning of the game, so I'm sure he'll be back once he finds the site again.

Edit: Oh, and I got a request from someone wanting to join the game today. I told him/her to post here, so don't be surprised if someone comes by to say hi in a bit.

Question regarding reading the carvings... once Zhegre realizes that none of us recognize the language, he'd want to cast comprehend languages, which he prepared for the day. (Really -- look above! ^_^ ) Do we have time before the wingbeats show up?

If not... well, as demons are resistant to fire and Zhegre's not carrying any ranged weapons and he's used spiritual weapon for the day, frankly I'd be pretty good with hanging back for a round to cast it, glance over the carvings, and then dash after everyone else!

Sorry I was using a bit of time compression there. Let's just say that you did cast Comprehend Languages, and it failed, because the writing is magical. I mean, there's no point in making you wait until after combat to tell you your spell won't work.

Sorry all, I'm travelling at the moment so with planewalker being down and me not being close to a computer I've been really struggling. Sad

I'll try to post but I'll probably still be a bit absent for 2 more weeks until I get home.

I may miss a few rounds of combat I'm afraid and I'm away from my books so don't expect anything fancy from Kadar.

I think Duckluck's meaning to imply that the creature is immune to critical hits when he's mentioning things like it not having kidneys.

Also, GAAAAHdice! I am a trained priest of a war god specially rated with the warhammer, wielding an expensive dwarven-make weapon, currently blessed, divinely righteously wroth, and being assisted by a flanking comrade. And I just rolled something that could be beaten one out of three times by a lone, untrained commoner with a stick. Give me a 3d6 system where a man can expect his skills to be reliable, darn it...

I don't know. If it’s susceptible to sneak attacks it’s likely susceptible to crits as well – the fact that it doesn’t have organs doesn’t necessarily mean it doesn’t have any weak points. I would be a very sad panda if all the opposition down here were elemental, undead, or otherwise effectively impregnable to Polp’s efforts.

Yeah, you've run into a streak of unlucky rolls there. Shocked

On the bright side, though, we’ve gone through 4 rounds of combat in 4 days – that’s certainly a boost in relation to earlier gaming!

No, it wasn't immune to critical hits. The whole "being of solid ash" thing was just flavor. I don't think anyone has ever made stats for a Disciple of Alzrius, so from a game design perspective, it was just a Half-fiend human with a bunch of fighter levels, a bad ass club, and Fire Immunity. The round he did 22 damage was actually his Smite Good, and he rolled low on damage. Had I rolled a crit he could have potentially one-shotted Zhegre.

Good to hear. It's always effective, as a morale device, to bring in as hard a hit as possible as soon as possible -- hit 'em hard hit 'em fast, and all that. I was under the impression that that guy could do that sort of damage on average, which meant I was staring down someone that I thought might reduce me to around zero with the next hit. :^)

By "inside" I meant

By "inside" I meant "somewhere further in than that ring."  I.e., the whole region from just past the 7th to the Spire, in all of which arcane Plane Shift is blocked.

From Duckluck's description, we'd normally be around the border between 7th and 8th, so even allowing for a bit of fluctuation the Spirelight has expanded at least a full ring.

So, other players: what to

So, other players: what to do about the orb.  We should probably confer before striking any deals on the spot.  Zhegre would suggest that it's obviously a dangerously powerful artifact that predates probably any civilization we have record of around here, kobold or dwarven, and that it may be a bad idea for any group to actually claim ownership of it.  Such things have proved a corrupting temptation so many times.  Also, he'd want to issue the caveat that we would like to see the results of any explorations as to the thing's utility -- legend lore's good for this kind of thing, but it takes a long time to cast -- and we may need sudden access to the thing if their mission turns in that direction.  Otherwhise, it would likely be quite inconvenient to be hauling an artifact around in the wilderness randomly, and so keeping it under lock and key in a settled area is probably for the best.  Some of this could probably be conviently discussed with the High One with the rest of our business.  What are you guys' takes on it?

As for the rest of the stuff, he is feeling quite open-minded and group-oriented with regards to the other treasure, having already been provided with divine lewtz this trip.  ^_^  The gems are probably safe, but a quick examination of the cloak and the torch seems called for.  The cloak is likely okay, but I bet that Torch has bad vibes attached, and we may want to see to it that it's disenchanted.

Regarding the artifact, I

Regarding the artifact, I certainly don't recommend we withhold it from the kobolds, despite the danger it might pose. Doing so could compromise our meeting with the High One and generally our relationship to the kobolds, and they are probably better equipped ressource-wise to investigate the orb. However, I think its a good idea if we (politely) insist on being kept in the loop about what they learn and inform them on the inscriptions pertaining to Alzrius.

Concerning the remaining gear, Polp would be very grateful if he were to have the tattered cloak, but I certainly understand if someone else is interested as well. He would be least fond of the gems, considering his recent severe burns.

Kadar's not going to be replacing his cloak any time soon so you're welcome to it.

I think I'll do a cadence whispers to help decide which way he'll jump on the orb issue.
