Dear Planescape fans, as you allready know that nothig sets mood of RPG session better than good music.

So object of this post is music: What kind of music do you use on your sessions, do you use it at all, do you create soundtracks for specific planes or are you playing some random shuffle.

But for starters let´s talk (write) of opening themes (like fanfare of Star Wars movies), for example openig theme from Doctor Who TV show has exelent combo of adventure and planar wierdness in it, so we use it sometimes as our opening theme (but our DM thinks it is too wierd and psyhodelic). Smiling

So if you like music, write about it. And since this is my first post, sorry for bad english  .

My gaming group would get Far too distracted by music - but on at least a few occasions the Mission Impossible theme, Secret agent man, James Bond, or the National Geographic theme has slipped it's way out of a laptop mid game... Eye-wink

Usually the result is a lot of grinning and a temporary lull as our distractable GM laughs.

Only once have I played Beastie Boys 'Brass Monkey' in a game - and I still swear it was fitting - Feng Shui game where I was playing, in fact, a Brass Monkey. Eye-wink

W00t, first post and a good theme.

So to begin in revial tone
--
my opening theme choice for Sigil would be either a typical jewish folk melody (I have a good one on the "Snatch" soundtrack) or a Tim Burton movie theme, for example opening theme from Beetle Juice.
These both sound very silly because in both of our PC parties live outside of Hive and are good friends, so I'd have to change it for a more serious campaign/party or gloomy to some sort of progressive indie music.
But unfortunately I don't have any of that on my comp.

I like to use both David Bowie and Tool/Full Circle groups for atmospheric purposes of various planes.
I remember that Pink Floyd was superb for Mount Celestia and System of a Down were cool for Pandemonium.
But anything can be used I guess(even ska if you like more of an anime setting), I have to come up with a list.

I'm a little bit annoyed with DM's music preference(heavy metal this and heavy metal that  ).

Well silence is good if there is something important or ominus in air, but sometimes I cannot imagine game session without music; I am ocasional DM (Ravenloft and Star Wars) and music helps me get the right felling of seting.

Btw. @Clueless - you gave me a good idea to compile a list and save it on my new laptop and we should have a session in the nearby mountain shed(my house is on the hill side of town and mountain resorts are pretty near, 15 min drive or so).
This is quite possible now that two of the players have cars.

This should create a great atmosphere Laughing out loud .
I'll have to try it out soon, because the weather is great.
Sorry for the OT and thread hijacking.

P.S. spam _ @Clu' - Moby's version of Bond theme is very good, it just came up on my playlist Shocked .

So wery true, so wery sad. This is cllasic example of DM forcing his taste on his group.

But you have to admit that Hevy metal is great (if not sterotypical) background music for combat encounters and/or chaotic planes (Abyss, Limbo or Ysgard).

We have a hard enough time sometime keeping the DM on track sometimes in the first place. And any of the atmospheric musics we could use (Tool for example) would distract him the most - he would most likely simply *stop* talking while listening to it.

The music from Planescape: Torment is always a good choice and it can be easily extracted with a tool like Near Infinity.

Yes, music can be great distraction tool but it works on players too. Smiling
I use this to regain my thinking after players actions (players are chaotic lot) and awoid that dreaded silence when they all stare at you.

Yes, Torment have nice and light nonagressive bacground music that won´t distract players or DM.

Our group plays at least tune or two from Torment during sessions (then our DM starts naginn and we must put on heavy metal :x).

Btw, my faworites from Torment are: Opening theme, and Credits. Smiling

I'm enough of a musician that playing recognizable tunes would be distracting (except for comedic purposes) but orchestral soundtracks to movies could work really well. Batman Returns, POTC, maybe some of the lesser-known Star Wars pieces, etc. That said, one's mileage can, and indeed does, vary Smiling

Totally forgot: the original score of Mr & Mrs Smith has some killer tangos in it that can be played both straight and comedically as you'd like. Particularly good for a party rife with Kriegstanz, I'd guess.

[Although this topic reminds me, I have to finish my "operatic" PS story some time...]

This reminded me: "Dune" sondtrack (by Toto) is great for PS. Laughing out loud

It has it all: combat tunes, mysterious and haunting planar themes (perfect for Astral, Ethereal planes and planar travel, not to mention deserted Pelion or similar place), it also has some nice emotonal tunes, and opening theme captures grandnes of planes werry well.

Unfortunatly it is rather short for a soundtrack but I would recomend it anyone who wish to add some mystery music to their games.

In fact, any music without lyrics is way less distracting than those with... If you only tried music with lyrics and found it to distracting, try again without. I gives an unique feeling in the game.

So the soundtracks from "Brotherhood of the Wolf" or "Le pacte des loups" in french (its a french movie) is quite excellent for a planescape session. Also, Bram Sotker's Dracula and Mary Shelly's Frankeinstein.

Traditionnal Balkan (rom), middle-eastern even some indian music is quite good as well. It often as lyrics but unless you speak rom, arabian or indian, you don't get a thing so its just as good. We also lisen to some german and swediwh bands as well for we don't speak german or swedish and those languages souds so arsh and almost evil, wich fits more in some planes. (Precislely Haggard, Finntroll (the acquistic album, Visor um sluttet) and Angizia)

I don't tend to use music much in my campaign, except for the occasional hint of something to provide emphasis.

That said, I'm currently writing a con scenario that has the specific instruction to play the overture from Don Giovanni at the beginning. If you're looking for good thematic music have a look at some of the stuff from before 1950, you can find some very interesting music for use in your games amidst the works of Elgar, Brahms, Beethoven, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Bach, etc.

Finntroll are great for eny fantasy setting featuring: goblins, orcs, trolls, gigants and evil fey so they are perfect for Ysgard. Smiling

Soundtrack from Dracula is great and allready part of my Ravenloft game (unfortunatly I don´t hawe Frankenstain Sad ).

As for warious etno tunes: I think Arabic and Indian tunes would be worth exploring. I´m gonna ask my friend Duster who´s dad collects etno music to look up for something interesting (maybe create playlist or two).

Anyway´s thanks for adwice. Smiling

I don't use music during game play because my players would not pay attention. However, I do listen to music when creating adventures or encounters involving creatures or NPCs from specific planes. I listen to a lot of heavy metal (so do my players), but that's okay because the bad guys are from planes that reflect it. In some cases I'll just identify musicians, while in others I'll list specific songs/compositions.

Limbo

- Weird Al

Pandemonium

- GWAR
- Sepultura (nonconformity oriented songs and track 13 on Chaos AD)

Abyss

- Pantera
- Sepultura
- Chaos Theory

Carceri

- Sepultura (corruption/oppression oriented songs)
- Rammstein

Gray Waste

- Mozart- Requiem Mass
- Fear Factory- A Therapy for Pain
- Morbid Angel- Nar Mattaru

Gehenna

- Theme music for Rome (HBO)
- Theme music for Carnivale (HBO)

Baator

- Napalm Death
- Morbid Angel

Outlands (Tir na Og/ Tir fo Thuinn)

- Loreena McKinnet

Maybe this will spur some more discussion on the topic...

I'd reccommend Oh Fortuna for Pandemonium. It's always put me in mind of a somewhat tempestuous scene. Perhaps Zadok the Priest for Mt. Celestia.

I decided to make use of a small piece of music I wrote recently in my game this evening. My players know that it was inspired by the group of Xaositects found in Armoury99's Desire and the Dead and so when I was bringing them in against one of the players, I was able to just play the music and the player who was encountering them instantly knew what had happened.

This list looks wery good. I like idea of Mozrat for Gray Waste. Smiling

This tunes could work for Limbo: some sort of cacophony of sounds, or for more relaxed wersion of Limbo some sort of jazz (it´s all about improvisation).

For Pandemonium would be graet tune from movie: "2001" (dir: Stanley Kubrick), where Bowman goes into the Black Monolith at the end of movie. (It is long haunting tune with wailing voices.)

Mozart's earlier work is much more light-hearted and could work on the Upper Planes. His personal zeal for life and parties causes me to think that it would sit well in chaotic and good aligned planes. Following his father's death, his music became much darker. Not necessarily the evil, rage, or manpulation associated with the other Lower Planes, much the dread, despair, and depression that I think is best represented by the Gray Waste.

On the other end of the planes, Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite (parts featured in Disney's Fantasia) would work well in Elysium or the Beastlands.

Thinking on Limbo, I suspect that the Dance Macabre by Saint-Sans might work well. I can't really imagine it beinng represented by Stockhausen or Ligeti.

For the Beastlands, a fair amount of the Carnival of the Animals, especially the Royal March of the lions. Possibly Le Sacre du Printemps by Stravinsky as well.

You are talking about soundtrack from TV show? It has passed some time since I watched it, so I don´t remember actal music from series. Sad
(I guess all Dune stuff is good).

I would also recomed soundtrack from PC game: Emperor, battle for Dune (Westwood studios), wich has some great music (Ordos themes are perfect for insidous Yugoloths). Smiling

Also, Dune 2000 game also has good music that could be used in PS.

Nooooo, the heavy metal loving DM has found us! We are doomed!!!

Anyway, let´s not waste this post, so back to topic.

After I´ve lisened L.V. Bethoven´s 9th symphony (doom, doom, doooom!!!) I could not help to notice that it would be great theme for Acheron, (Bethoven composed it in Napoleon´s honor I think) because it reminds me of chlasing cubes.

If we're talking about metal, I suppose an argument could be made for Manowar on Ysgard, Bolt Thrower on any battlefield for the Blood War, and Fear Factory for the scarier areas of Mechanus.

Also, I'd like to add the score to Firefly to the list of Sigil music

I'm not going to add much of my opinions, but I feel that Power Electronics, Noise and Death Industrial are the genres that fit into parts of Mechanus and Pandemonium. I'm not an expert on those genres so I can't give too many examples.

I think torment soundtrack is by far the most fit as music background (specially the mortuary theme... totally love it). Then any rpg background or movie score can work it out... but i think that is better a) try to put music from the same source (with a certain mood, don't change that much) and b) nothing very 'noticeable', you know, don't distract player's attention with the music

Mark Morgan, who is responsible for most of the Torment soundtrack, composed also music for Fallout which is quite similar.

I recommend soundtracks from Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity by Kirill Pokrovsky. A bit too much of industrial sounds for a normal fantasy game but perfect for Planescape. They can be downloaded from composer's site: www.kirillpokrovsky.com

Recently I've discovered music from Final Fantasy series. It is mostly orchestral with unique flavor. I plan to use it in future.

Out of idle curiosity (to see if it could be done), I actually went ahead and put together a "cinematic" soundtrack for a Planescape campaign I'm running as a Play-by-Post. It was a fun little experiment. Smiling

Influenced by Mark Morgan's Torment soundtrack, I used a lot of "ethnic" music: several tracks from Philip Glass' Kundun; Jack Wall's Myst 3:Exile and Myst 4: Revelations soundtracks (Middle-Eastern and African vibes, respectively); Icelandic band Sigur Ros' Takk... and (); Hans Christian's album Surrender which blends Indian instruments with the Cello; TuvaCelt by Andrei Vinogradov which mixes Tuva throat-singing with a Celtic song; and the redux of Clint Mansell's Lux Aeterna from Requiem for a Dream -- the version I have layers some vocals from Lisa Gerrard over the first few minutes of the song.

At around 1 hour and forty minutes of music, I was pretty happy with the arrangement. Laughing out loud

The PS:T soundtrack is great. Does anybody know something about the composers Mark Morgan and Richard Band?

Wikipedia says something about a song by Lustmord, that was composed but wasn’t used for Torment. His music really fits Planescape.

If inevitable, I prefer somehow “bizarre” (don’t know a better word for it) classical music for pen&paper:
Orff’s (inevitable) “Carmina Burana”,
“Dance of the Knights” from Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet”,
(“Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” From “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky Eye-wink

Music for Lower Planes is easy to find, but for upper planes job is bit harder, so here is some ideas:

After long time I have lisened again some Mike Oldfield albums, and they have some great relaxing themes for (chaotic) upper planes (namely Voyager album), and "Sentinel" theme is great mysterious tune. Oldfield has also some geat music for Tir na Og and Ysgard (one´s have celtic and nordic sound in them, or that are just like bagpipes).

Classical music is better suiteded for lawful upper planes, so I would recomend J. S. Bach compositons for church organs are ideal for Mount Celestia (Fugue is ideal if something is ominous in air).

Sigil needs something distinctly urban, perhaps even atonal. Or, I would imagine, something akin to the Ghost in the Shell anime soundtrack (very cross-cultural) or, even, the excellent Millennium series. The Hive could do with some ethnic music, but given the sheer difficulty of imagining what say, tiefling, half-orc or elven music would be like complicates matters. In any case, Sigil has to be fusion by definition.

I've debated with myself about whether I should use music or not. I still haven't decided.

Regardless of what I choose, I know that I do want to use an audio track for at least one thing; I want a long looping track of winds that change in tone and volume suitable for use in Pandemonium. Does anyone know where I can find one?

Here is idea for where to find wind track: I think you should search for some "Scary noises" compilations wich shurely have howling wind tune. I think such compilations should be avilable at most good game or music stores.

Back again at my first thread. Smiling

Yesterday, I have after long time again watched on MTV: Enigma´s tv spot called Sadness, and I tougt this is great theme for mount celestia temple or even for succubus seduction theme (that is what is song all about: Desire that cannot be fullfiled, and when it finaly is fulfiled it leaves nothing but Saddnes).
Tv spot is also very Planescapeish in appearence: with young monk in red robes who guard forbidden door (that leads into nothingness)in ruinous monastery. It is wery inspirational. Smiling

Anyways Enigma´s music is certanly worth exploring: at least their early works.

I distinctly remember the haunting quality of the music from the old game Shadow of the Beast (Amiga 500 era?).

Seems appropriate enough to mention, though I never did find much of it as downloadable music recently.

Of course, there are many more soundtrack CDs. I especially like those from the Battlestar Galactice new series by Richard Gibbs and Bear McReary.

Representative polls showed that nine out of ten Sodkillers listen to Rammstein.

Btw, I warmly recommend In Extremo’s album “Weckt die Toten” (Rouse the Dead). They mix original medieval lyrics and instruments with punk rock.

Back again to my first post...

Recently I got 2 CDs named Doctor Who Original TV soundtrack: seires 1&2 and Doctor Who Original TV soundtrack: seires 3 by Murray Gold.
And all I can tell you they are great. Laughing out loud
Both CDs have large range of music from scary, sad, mysterious, whimsical and boisterus. In other words fun.

So even if you are not fan of Doctor Who, I would recomend you to try get yours hands, paws, claws and mitts on soundtrack from series 3 (I like it more than first one) to all who are searching good gaming music.
It has great themes for villans and combat, but some of them are made for planescape. (track 6. BOE is just marvelous).

I myself generally am a musician; I make music which is more or less "industrial ambient," which is useful for the kind of grunge that Planescape captures.
I usually write music for my group uniquely. It's fun.

When I'm not doing that, I like to make my more sneaky, darker games have soundtracks ranging from Meat Beat Manifesto to Nurse With Wound.
