So what does the Abior- in Abiorach mean, anyway?

Does anyone know? I've researched that topic for years without any luck. The best guess I have is "without life" given their elemental leanings, but that would seem to lean harshly against the standard naming convention for Rilmani.

Other PS names that don't quite seem to have any meaning:

Amnizu
Gacholoth
Kocrachon
and of course Baernaloths : /

I'm sure I'm reposting this but I have not found any other topics on this yet. If there exists one, could someone be so kind as to point me in that direction? Thanks in advance!

If it helps spread confusion about the great evil race, 'baern' can carry a meaning of 'child'.

Barney's lousy talking voice and great singing voice

In a recent interview, the Planescape design team revealed that the baernaloth is named after Barney Gumble, Homer Simpson's friend.

Given this revelation, we probably don't need to know the origin of the other names you mention, though they would probably be amusing.

Yeah so did I. If that's true about the Simpsons reference, then they truly are the most vile wicked beings in the multiverse.

Actually I thought of another one I couldn't find a solid definition for, the Dergholoths, though Abiorach was the real gem I'd liked to have found out. Is there a link to the transcript of that interview somewhere?

Amnizu are the erstwhile Styx Devils, the devils most associated with memory loss, also known as... amnesia.

Yeah, it took me too bloody long to figure that out too.

[I'm willing to bet that gacholoths and kocrachons don't have meaningful names, but I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise.]

D'oh! Good one : )

Well i figured out most of the baatezu by myself, barbazu comes from barbos, which is latin for beard, Cornugon comes from Corn, which is horn, Spinagon.. umm, yeah.

No thoughts on the Abiorach itself though? Maybe it'd help if we could isolate the base salts (metals really but whatever) they're supposedly made of.

On a related note:

A pattern of naming: Baatezu, amnizu, barbazu- there seems to be a consistent -zu that is common in Infernal names. Yet the glabrezu, a tanar'ri, also has this name. Could there be some kind of connection between the glabrezu and the baatezu? An ancient crossover from Baator to the Abyss? Who knows?

It would certainly make sense given their proclivity towards long term planning and sycophantic (if not entirely false) obedience towards their masters. Or maybe its an insulting Marilith naming convention that just sort of stuck Smiling
