Races and New Players

I'd though I'd post up some work I'd done ayear or 2 ago on a concept Ps MMO - this bit to do with player Races and new players (Zeniel, this is some of the stuff from the docs I pm'ed you about)

___________________________________________

The basic complient of races available for a new player are Prime races - human, elf, dwarf, orc, goblin, halfing, gnome (whatever takes your fancy really from basic humaniod primes). these would be Teir 0 races (see below)

Starting location - Sigil

when you beginplay with a new character, a short narrative or cinemtaic describes you falliong through a portal and being thrown out onto a dirty cobbled street (aka sigil).

Within sigil, we have several starting noobs area (1 in each ward prehaps) that a new character randomly arrives through a portal from their prime. An NPc then takes them through some opening quests to welcome them to the Cage and sends em to a kip somewhere after 1/2 hour in game or something, simple.

during the course of playing, character may accept special blue (just for referecne atm) quests. blue quests are long, in depth quests, with only 3 such quests spawning each 24 hours within the game at random NPCs. A blue quest, once complete adds a new playable race to the players account. each blue quest is for a particular race and has something to do with that new race.

With blue quest races, have a teir system, Teir 1, teir 2 and Tier X. Teir 1 blue races are common planar races (Gith, Bariur, Gensai, plane touched), Teir 2 races are more exotic but still largely humaoniod (minatour, genies, ) and Teir X races are impressive planar races that are rare (Angels, Big Demon, Devils, or very inhuman like mind flayers).

Once the game is released, blue races could be 'lowered' to teir 0 once the game is estalished and new blue races could be added to Teir 1 ,2 or X. Teir X races shouldnt be lowered to other Teirs to keep them very rare.

hope that makes sense for a very quick overview of my idea

the overall idea is to add diversity ot playable races, but still maintain that humaniods are more common and is also gives players something else to achieve

Any thoughts?

Well, I'm not a true Vet by any means, but it sounds like it could work very well. I had a similar though about making unlockable races, and this executes it wonderfully.
