I was just thinking, what types of characters will be playable? Will it only be adventurers, soon to be Planewalkers? Or will it be more open ended with player merchants and whatnot?
Player character types.
I see your point, but I think you're forgetting that most MMORPGs suck. Everquest, and later WoW and all their clones, proved that suck sells. However, you're not trying to sell anything so there's no need to make this game suck. Instead of taking inspiration from games that are mind numbing in both profits and gameplay you might try considering some games that were merely successful, and deeply loved by their fan bases. Ultima Online before it was ruined, Star Wars Galaxies before it was ruined, and I've never played it but I've hear EVE Online is quite good as well.
Well, that's my tactless opinion on it.
Wait? UO was ruined? But- but I never even got the chance to play it! And I bought the game like 8 years ago!
Stupid EA assassinating Lord British! His symbolism of killing them through Elizabeth and Abraham and the destroyer of worlds was far better!
Bah and a thousand times more bah! Just one of the many reasons why we must make this game!
Well I suppose in that game's case bad players started ruining it first. They never really set up a good incentive to get people to roleplay or at least leave others who were alone. Of course then EA got it's mitts on it. Personally I haven't played it since a were months after the release of the first expansion.
What's this about Elizabeth and Abraham and assassinating Lord British?
Well in Ultima7 you have to track down two members of the fellowship throughout the whole game, called Elizibeth and Abraham, or EA abreviated. Also Origins slogan was always "We create worlds" The guardian in U7 was known as the destroyer of worlds. He also used a bizarre machines made of blackrock to forward his plans that were in the shape of a cube, sphere and tetrahedron. I know for a fact that this was a deliberate attempt by Richard Garriot to expre1ss his hatred for his publisher EA. Now in UO when it began dying, somebody at one point actually succeeded in killing Richard Garriots immortal avatar, Lord British, the ruler of Brittania. This was a stunt pulled off by EA to show both that Garriot had left origen and that ultima was now in the hands of guardian themself, Electronic Arts. I say it was a crap stunt and LB's one was better.
If wizards does the same to our serenity I'll never forgive myself.
Isn't the first time LB was assassinated. Someone exploited a bug in the closed beta to kill him during an event. He got kicked out of the beta for good.
Yeah I read about that. Thought it was kinda harsh. Although the rules of the game do state explicitly not to exploit bugs. But then again maybe the rule was added after that incident.
Hm, that's strange, I don't remember that Elizabeth and Abraham part, oh well , I never finished U7.
Edit, hm, after looking it up on Wikipedia I suddenly remember that I did hear about it vaguely, but I never got to the part where you meet the two.
Oh hey, I found an interesting article about the Origin/EA thing here. It's a bit gushy, but it's still an interesting read.
EDIT: Uhm.. sorry about the triple post. New record? Heh. I kept getting Navigation Cancelled pages, clicking Back, and resubmitting. Turns out, it worked the first couple of times. I blame my apartment building's POS internet provider, which allows me to soar at a death defying 24kbs with only occasional disconnections. Broadband my ___.
Well, here are my two cents:
Obviously, most roleplayers would prefer a game where you can choose to have your character make a living by any means, with adventuring being only one option alongside such activities as owning a business, hiring out your services, or being a spiv-of-all-trades. The problem however, is twofold. First, the 3e ruleset, which is what I assume will be used, does not lend itself well to much but adventuring. Leveling is the preferred method of gaining power, with jink, secrets, and favors being secondary perks. In Sigil, however, one could potentially become a Golden Lord if you gather enough of the latter three while remaining a lvl 0 commoner. The second problem is programming it. In most MMO's, the most interaction that PC's have with NPC's is accepting quests, killing baddies, selling/buying items, and repeating. If you want a system where a player can buy out somebody's building, set up their own business (be it selling larva imported from the Waste, carrots grown on Bytopia, or little handbuilt models of factories), blackmail an NPC with some secret chant, be assassinated by an NPC whom they blackmailed with some secret chant, or engage in any of a thousand other such non-combat interactions... well, it would require a heck of a lot of very innovative programming and very powerful servers to handle all that information. I've not seen a professional MMO that has approached anything remotely resembling that kind of interactivity. NPC's would have to lead dynamic lives and react to non-combat player actions. A new player run store opens up? So many NPC's with the appropriate interest would come in and shop. An player leaks a rumor that Zadara is killing babies? Zadara had better send a couple of bashers to deal with the source, potentially asking other players if they know who is responsible. If it turns out that the player actually has evidence of Zadara killing babies... well, if he's canny enough to not get penned, then Zadara might decide to open her wallet... at least until the berk gets careless. Some of that can be accomplished with quests, granted, but that would just make it a step that everybody goes through to get to level whatever and get enough jink for a horse.
So, even though I, for one, would prefer such a dynamic world, I would be absolutely stunned if you guys could pull it off.
