Planewalker's Guild

I was wondering if the Planewalker's guild is still alive and well (don't see why it wouldn't be) on the Infinite Staircase. Also has there been any thought given to the guild looking to regain a prominent presence in Sigil now that the Factions have gone. The guild used to be pretty strong in Sigil before the factions arouse and started to frown upon dual membership.

I assume it might be a hard sell to many of the Planewalkers guild to move back to the City of Doors but perhaps a few or even a good number of them might want to make the move back to greener pastures again. Get back to the city life rather than the camp type life the guild has grown into over the years on the Infinite Staircase (the second best location in the Multiverse in terms of number of and access to portals).

Anyway just thought I would toss that out there with the idea I might have a character starting up recruitment again in Sigil and/or start a thread hanging out on the Staircase. Although that being said I might be more inclined to start an adventure thread than a location one. Cool

Planewalker's Guild

Well since the Faction War, The Planewalkers Guild has moved back into Sigil, though under new leadership.

Taken from chapter 7 / Guide to Sigil on Planewalker:

"The Planewalkers Guild – Irony is in no small supply since the end of the Faction War. Perhaps no greater example exists than the reemergence of the Planewalkers Guild within Sigil.

The guild first originated in Sigil over nine centuries ago, and at its height it held over three thousand members under it aegis. But, as with all the guilds after the Great Upheaval, the factions growing power within Sigil caused them to diminish in their influence. Even though it predated many of the then-ruling factions, the Planewalkers Guild saw itself threatened by remaining in Sigil; so the organization simply left to reestablish itself elsewhere.

The guild has existed as a thriving, but ever moving, organization upon the Infinite Staircase since its departure from the City of Doors. But now, with the factions gone, it has seen fit to abandon what was never really seen as a permanent home, given the ever-changing nature of the Staircase. The guild has now returned to Sigil and set up their headquarters within what some graybeards claim was once their original guildhall within the Market Ward.

With the group returning to Sigil, however, they do so without their former guild master and his kyrie consort, the Krynnish Minotaur Hav’run Thain and Vagis. Without their former leaders, the guild has since elected Balthasar Thames (CG male human Wiz13) as guild master.

The guild’s symbol is that of a golden doorway over a silver staircase, at the base of which lies a blue enamel river and brown enamel tree roots. The symbol is often embroidered upon a sash or worn upon a belt, amulet, ring, or most commonly a broach. The guild charges a monthly fee of 6 silver pieces which it uses to commission the exploration and mapping of certain planar locations, as well as to supply these maps and all relevant information to members at a nominal fee, or typically no further cost. The guild has also managed to strike deals with various merchants in the Cage to offer a discount on certain supplies useful to a planewalker such as spell components, weapons, mundane travelers goods, and certain magical items."

Cool I hadn't gotten around to reading that chapter yet although I have downloaded it. Laughing out loud I should really do that now that I am here roleplaying in post faction war Planescape.

Is there any plan to do more detailed writeups on any of the guilds particularly the Planewalker's guild?

At the moment no, but its more from having tons of other things to work on as well. If the interest is there we can certainly expand on them. I wouldn't want to overdetail them perhaps so as to leave room for DM's to slide NPCs of their own into mid to high influence roles in each guild.

What detail you got on the guilds in the Sigil writeup was almost significantly trimmed down because of the worry that there was too much detail (and that the chapter itself was too long).

Oh ok, I was just thinking it might be fun to write a planewalker version of Faces of Sigil. Do you guys have permission to use previously published characters like Shemeska the Marauder or A'kin the Friendly Fiend? I guess either way it would still be a ton of fun to write or help write something like that. Laughing out loud

P.S. I got an e-mail reply back (after a few months) and then replied to it about a week after I got it (like 3-4 weeks ago) and never got a reply about getting involved with Planewalker work.

Count me in on THAT project. I'd love to see (and be involved with) a PW version of Faces! I was just starting to get involved with the Cutters section before the Hiatus.

Yes we'd have permission to do something like that as far as I know.

Send another email since that person's been busy, and somewhat under the weather.

So, what guilds were mentioned in the original published works, and what guilds now exist in Sigil, post-FW?

The only guilds that existed pre-FW (and all of which got ported over post FW) were detailed in 'In the Cage: A Guide to Sigil'. Without actually looked at that, or at what I wrote for the Sigil guide, I want to say it was the Innkeepers, Builders, Escorts, Teamsters, and the guild of Master Clerks and Scribes.

In 'Faction War' the upstart morticians and entertainers guild were mentioned IIRC. There may have been the sanitation guild mentioned as well.

Some of the guilds in the Sigil guide I created, and one or two had been pitched as ideas in some earlier work on one of the Planewalker yahoo groups. And while I may not have actually mentioned it in the guide, there's also an Alchemist's guild that has existed since before the Great Upheaval and went underground rather than submit to the will of the rising factions. This was mentioned in one of the canon sources, though where exactly I can't recall at the moment. Might have been Faction War.
