Planewalker Roleplaying Boards FAQ

Welcome to the www.planewalker.com roleplaying board! We're glad to see you here and hope you'll find plenty to entertain you. This FAQ is designed to provide a few bits of advice or notes so you can settle in quickly here.

1) What are these sticky threads up here at the top?
When we were deciding how we wanted to run this forum, we wanted to support two different forms of roleplaying.

The first format that we wanted to support was custom gaming. These are threads that are started by a particular GM, and generally run under that GMs own rules. This is up to whoever wants to run one to start, no permission is needed at *all*. Just toss out a thread and recruit some players. GMs are free to ru the thread as they wish, and may require full character sheets, or certain levels of play, may be open to new players, or closed as a campaign underway. To join these it's usually polite to ask the GM for the thread if you may join up.

(Highlighted because folks kept missing it.)

The second exists within a shared world - run by our moderation staff - these threads are open to all, and are a great place to get your feet wet. This is a shared world, and will have less large changes from standard canon, simply an effect of being open to all. Anyone can just stroll into these threads, and they are usually associated with a particular location. The first post of each of these threads will have the place description and links to any previous threads in that location as well. Gaming in these threads will be more of a freeform style - but we would like if you'd post up a character description for everyone to see. It's a good way of introducing yourself.

RECENT CHANGES: Check This Post

2) Some general advice to GMs on running game threads
Obviously keep posting and the game will stay alive. This goes for players as well as GMs. Beyond that it's entirely up to you how exacting you want to be when you start a thread. You can ask for stats and dice rolls if you want, or just stick to free form play.

3) Character description? Where would I put that?
The character description thread should be one of the sticky threads at the top of this board. The first post of the thread will give suggestions on writing up your profile, as well as links to any previous character threads. You should be able to link back to these posts in your signature file so everyone can see who you are. Iconic characters should put up a profile too, we may have newbies who don't know who you are. Eye-wink

4) Where can I find information on Planar Cant?

As Lok found: a Dictionary

Also, cant is remarkably simular to certian aspects of cockney in london, so you can use that as a model easily as well.

5)I assume that whenever plots makes it possible we can just move our characters about to the various threads created by the admin?

Right.

6) Also I assume if I want to stat a roleplaying thread I can just do that or should I get it approved by someone?

Just start one up, no need to ask permission at all. The admin threads are there to give a 'touchstone' if someone's completely new to Planescape or a character is between adventures. They're intended as start points - not as the only threads on the board. If you want to start your own thread, either spinning it off the main, or just recruiting for a game to run for yourself - go for it.

7) So can I start a freeform thread of my own here?

Yes.

8 ) Is there any place I find a definite map of Sigil? Or even a guide, there just needs to be something that everyone on this forum will accept as Sigil, so all the taverns or other important places will be in the same place for everyone.

Bob found us a good one at: Sigil Map

So - from here on, ask questions and we'll do our best to answer them here. Smiling

Right on both counts - thread hopping is perfectly fine from location to location, and we do want new threads started as needed. (Either for you to run a particular game, or to bring RP off to the side) Since we're starting up from scratch here, we to a certain extent can set our own RP ettiquite for the board - so do what works. Yeah I have a lot of experience doing this board type roleplaying with a couple of different boards. I have done some modding for this type of thing as well and have been a huge fan of Planescape for a long time. So it just works out really well here Laughing out loud

bonemage can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm reacting to it as a virgin from a prime world, prepped to be sacrificed in a religious/magical ceremony, or sold as a pleasure slave (the "fun" comment).

Which would explain Gnoll Druid and my reaction to the offer.

My character Jack was just joking around not too many evil people who would want something like that in the guild i am sure. About the having a little that is just a really old bad joke about hooking up with a virgin....

What level are the other characters? I'm pretty low level. Just wondering what we are expecting as a campaign.

Well, technically, Edward is 12th level. However, seven of those levels are Expert, so he's not as powerful as most 12th level characters.

PS-
You should probably ask this stuff in the adventure thread with an OOC tag on the front.

I meant it in ageneral fashion for all the folks hanging around the bar. Just to see what the spread is in power. But I agree.

ADMIN: if these are inappropriate please move them. APologies.

On the other end of the spectrum from Edward, Jaspar is an ECL 40 character, a massive epic power, but as he is more of a plot mover than anything else, I don't think he'll be too disruptive to the games' balance.

The Incenjucar is a CR 17 character (16th level outsider with quite an arrary of powers, however limited in energy form, with 3 levels of bard which simply do not have any real meaning compared to the rest -- nobody who has to worry about his bardic abilities will have anything resembling a chance against his polar abilities). He's quite impressive within his racial medium, but his only mental combat forms are bardic spells, so he's usually only forcing Reflex saves, which are the easiest to survive, on average.

The power levels aren't too important, really, so long as the characters don't start squabbling.

So can I start a freeform thread of my own here? Sorry if this a stupid question, the rules just didn't seem very clear about it.

Yeps - we're hoping to get more people involved in doing that sort of thing - so please, feel free. Smiling

Sorry for not answering this sooner, I've been moving and unpacking for the last few weeks.

I was thinking of starting a thread where people can either post openings or ask to get into a freeform thread. Do you think I should post that here or in the RPG discussion section? I was leaning towards the discussion section myself....

I suppose it depends on how the population of the board wants to go with it - is there any opinion one way or the other amongst our users?

Planewalker Roleplaying Boards FAQ

Update: After watching for awhile I've come to some conclusions:
1) We don't have enough active moderators to support the location threads quite as much as we wanted to.
2) There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of interest in it. So I'm going to make them unsticky.

RP in them should continue!! Don't think of this as the threads being killed because they *aren't*. (Don't make me bold and capitalize that.)
They're simply going to be treated just as any of the normal threads are - they live or die by participation of players. They may come back (aka, be sticky again) if we have a sufficient number of people keeping them rolling.
Board 'canon' will not be maintained by moderator based threads but rather by the folks running their own threads - if you want to have threads occur in the same 'plot-setting' then go for it at GM whimsy.
