Planes of Law: Baator, Inner Workings

I just got my copy of Planes of Law in the mail (won it on eBay, new still in shrink wrap for a really low price) and have been reading through all of the stuff inside.

Has anyone here ever ran or been a part of a group running the adventure idea "Inner Workings" in the Baator book?

If so, how did the PCs get past the 9999 demons guarding the gate to Nessus, and then how did they get the whole way down to the gate itself since it is apparently a ridiculous distance for any mortal to traverse. This is a "high level" adventure for people of 10+ level (second edition I know, but even still, I see level 15's of 3rd edition as having some major problems).

The easiest way around it that I've figured out is to use the River Styx since it does exist in Nessus, assuming that the PCs can find out the exact destination of the Balor with enough time to account for delays since the path of the Styx does like to weave in and out of various planes, and can take a variable amount of time when going though those planes. Of course then the PCs somehow have to survive a trek across Nessus, but this doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the adventure of trailing this Balor through every layer of Baator (although it works fine enough and could be very interesting and gives the "Total Lower Planes Experience").

Or even if you haven't run it, how do you think PCs would make it through these two huge obstacles?

Also, what is the "reason" for the whole meeting in the first place? I know it is up to the DM, so I'm wondering what reasons people have come up with.

Overall I just think this is a really cool adventure concept.

I remember hearing from a friend who ran in this campaign. their plan for getting through the demons was rather memorable and went something like this:

"Ok here's the plan. We're going to do something so unexpected that the devils won't have a chance. Everone listening? Ok what'll do is attack them, head on, from the side. They'll never see us coming."

Not much help maybe but you may be surprised to learn that the party did indeed survive.

- Disguise themselves as baatezu, bribe someone to get them passports to the next level down.

- Use the Styx, or the Lethe, or another route.

- Ask them "What would the torments of Hell be without the dream of Heaven?" (Only works if you're one of the Endless)

- Get a pit fiend escort (offering said pit fiend information it can use)

It shouldn't be too hard, since the Dark Eight actually want them down there, though they don't want the PCs themselves to know that.

Some of those are pretty decent ideas. Cool, thanks!

Of course, you might want to ensure that your PCs have some form of contract with the pit fiend, to at least allow for the possibility that he'll take you where you need to go. Puzzled

And secondly, ensure that the information WILL actually prove useful for the pit fiend.
