Ortho and Pacification

As to the "adventuring setting" - remember that utopia or hell hole, Ortho's mainly pacified, quiet, and tame. That's the whole point. Orcish culture should be nasty, but nasty on what I'll call for the sake of argument "a human scale" - as in, those vikings aren't very nice, but when they come in peace we trade with them.

While true, I think we shouldn't have to explain the fact that Ortho is still a place you can adventure all the time in. Maybe we should have a "Storytelling Ortho" section (Actually, Armoury99, I think you should be the one to write this).

While there's no rampaging kingdoms of Orcs and Lich Armies, I do think that we should establish Ortho is a place of constant adventure sources. We should just remind people that the form of adventure is a bit chnged.

1. Ortho is absolutely riddled with Devil worship, Cults to Chaos Lords, and Alzrius worship.

2. Intrigue is as bad as in Eberron with the OCA riddled with intra-department fighting and evil ambition.

3. Terrorism and Revolutionary movements are a constant problem on Ortho, they even have a god patronizing it.

4. The Repressive Nature of Ortho society means that there's A LOT of hidden vices and secrets.

5. Corruption in the OCA is prevalent to the point that you can do an entire campaign around rooting out unharmonius elements.

6. It's multi-planar and planetary nature means that you can still do large scale invasions, they just will come from abroad.

7. The Pervasive nature of Big Brother in the Harmonium means that even loyal Harmonium citizens will often come into conflict with the fanatical elements of their faith.

It's a different kind of adventure but Ortho has has ORDER and STABILITY not Peace.

Ortho and Pacification

Here are my thoughts on adventuring on a pacified planet. At it's heart, the Ortho Campaign setting is about politics. No published setting (except maybe Birthright) has had as strong a political bent as what we've put together. Not Greyhawk, not Eberron, not even Planescape. It is, to put it plainly, a non-traditional setting. That's not to say that it doesn't have other aspects -- certainly you could play an Ortho game that focused on Hack and Slash or non-political roleplay, but, at it's core, the Ortho Campaign Setting is about the state, the province, and the individual. This is fortunate, because a setting based around pure roleplay or hack and slash wouldn't work with a "pacified" world, but one based on politics will work quite nicely. Here are a few guidelines:

*Most Conflict on Ortho is Politically Motivated:
On Ortho, all politics are power politics and power comes on the end of a sword. Even perfectly mundane problems like a high tax on Coconuts or land use disputes in a river valley can be the impetus for espionage blackmail, or even assassination. You don't have to overdo it, but the PCs should run into enough corrupt land owners, amoral politicians, and over-zealous revolutionaries to keep things interesting.

*The Harmonium Drive Plots:
The Harmonium may try to keep things quiet on Ortho, but it does so through violence and more than a few people resent them for it. Whether you are working for or fighting against them, the Harmonium make a perfect catalyst for conflict. Virtually every party will fight for or against the Harmonium at some point. Most will do both.

*Ortho Isn't Wholly Pacified:
Even on a world as peaceful as Ortho there are still plenty of hidden or sequestered wilderness areas. Wild Hazkhan jungles, lawless Thaeran isles, and unexplored Hekan caverns all provide perfect opportunities for the PCs to kill monsters without worrying about getting sued by bereaved relatives. Just remember that the OCA has eyes everywhere and no one can hide from the Harmonium forever.

I also think it's important to always make sure the corruption underlying the surface is ever present.

* There's South Thaera dominated by Devils.
* There's North Thaera controlled by Illithids.
* Heka-Voll is a host for Alzrius worship and repressive nobility.
* The Thaeran Isles have a military coup in the plotting.

Admittedly, this may just be my lands but Ortho's got a lot of nastiness just below the surface.
