New Planescape-like movie: Mirrormask

From Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean (of Sandman fame) comes a new movie called Mirrormask, and damn, if it doesn't have that rich fairy-tale feel that's so ingrained in Planescape. Take a look at the preview. The spider made me think of some new type of Modron, and the Dark Lands in general could fit into Planescape perfectly (there's so much room in infinity!).

The problem with fantastical movies like this is that the world can often overpower the characters and the plot. In labyrinth, it was David Bowie's character that made everything hum (so to speak), and there needs to be a strong personality to anchor the story to reality. Here's hoping the acting can match the set design.

Dunno, I'm a huge fan of Gaiman's work, but I don't really see much of a connection between Mirrormask and Planescape...

Well, it's nothing overt, it's just the mood and feel of it. I associate Planescape with a certain modern fairy-tale style, as seen in movies such as Labyrinth, comics like Sandman and even videogames like Myst. I didn't mean to say that Mirrormask has the Outer Planes in it or anything as direct.

Planescape itself has large dollops of modernity embedded in it, such as Sigil's Victorian dystopian metropolis and the cosmopolitanism of major planar locations. The whole genre of magical realism that Neil Gaiman reinvigorated has a lot in common with Planescape, such as a new, almost post-modern, interpretation of mythology and celestial power structures. Not that I necessarily agree with that reconstruction, but the leitmotif is there.

I have to agree, mostly in the fact that the tone and feel of the picture reflects some aspects of PS. But then, from some parts I've read, it also reminds me a little of Ravenloft as well...
