- The 4e version of Eladrin are to be retconned as aasimar for the purposes of this game. Aasimar that use the 4e eladrin mechanics are aasimar that are descended from elves, the actual Planescape eladrin, or both.
- The new Mercykillers article has stats for a more generic Aasimar that can be extrapolated. This will be acceptable to use.
- Genasi tentatively will have one and only one manifestation, period. This means the "Extra Manifestation" feat will be unavailable. This is tentative and based in the desire for the more "traditional" genasi rather than those newfangled things 4e released (so I'm a bit nostalgic, sue me ). I realize this closes off one or two paragon paths but if you're dead set on those paths, we'll work something out.
- Given the nature of Planescape and the vast variety of races on the planes, any of the races from the back of the 4e Monster Manual are tentatively acceptable for play pending my approval. I need to go over them again and review to see what I will allow.
- Combat will be run rather differently. This is important, so please read. When combat occurs, initiative will not be rolled. Rather, combat will be divided into a PCs' turn and an NPCs/Enemy's turn. After combat begins, there will be a 24-hour window where the PCs may post their actions. Players may go in any order and the order can change from round to round. The only important part is that you post sometime during your 24-hour window. After the window is closed, I will post the NPCs' and Enemies' actions and the next round will start. PCs that fail to post in the 24-hour window will lose their turn -- an event that may have serious consequences for other characters.
- Players that will not be able to post for a time due to extenuating circumstances (busy life, homework, family issues, illness, etc.) will get absentee immunity if you let me know that you will be gone. This means that your characters are effectively invulnerable. They will neither act nor be acted upon if combat or other hostile situations occur. They will be assumed to follow along with the group, though, so if something happens that affects the whole party, the absentee immunity does not protect them here. Again, this immunity only applies if you inform me that you will be gone. If I don't hear from you and you simply stop posting, I won't go out to get your character, but I cannot guarantee your character's safety.

Glad to have you on board, Dunamin! :D I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Now to convince others that this game is worth joining...

Alright, so this is a concept I’m quickly growing fond of:
Coal the Extinguished
An azer for whom the flame within has somehow almost gone out. He doesn’t know how or why, but where his fiery hair and beard should be are now just faint hot glows, a sign that he may be slowly dying…
His personality reflects this prospect and thus he lives as if every day might be his last. He has spontaneous fits of “seizing the moment”, acting with near suicidal bravado when danger appears, and enjoying moments of gratification with little thought to future consequences.
At times he resigns himself to what he thinks will be his impending doom, while occasionally he is stirred by rumours of a way to "respark" his inner fire - the feather of a legendary phoenix, the blessing of the sultan of the City of Brass, etc.
I intended that for all mechanical purposes he would simply be considered a dwarf, and an infernal pact warlock would fit the fire theme nicely. I thought it would be awesome if his warlock patron was Imix but that might not fit with the group being good-inclined.
A very intriguing concept, the extinguished azer!
According to the 4e warlock concept, I get the impression that it's possible to be a warlock dedicated to an evil power or entity, but still be good-inclined. Perhaps in his desperation to rekindle his flame, he forged a pact with Imix? It's a long shot but maybe he saw it as the best way to bring the fire back.
Alternatively, Kossuth could potentially serve as a warlock patron. Flavor-wise it would make the Infernal Pact a little less "evil," but I imagine Kossuth would grant a lot of similar abilities. Kossuth isn't exactly evil, but neither is he a particularly nice fellow.

A pact made out of desperation sounds like it would fit so that the choice of Imix isn't too awkward, but then it would be easier to credibly preach about Kossuth...
Zaaman Rul is another possibility, I suppose, but there's just not terribly much to go on about him from PSMC3.
Any other fire-focused lords / archomentals / primordials you can recall?
Zaaman Ruul would work, too, though he is more overtly good. Depending on how desperate Coal is, you may or may not approach him. The thing with Kossuth, I recently realized, is he's a greater power, not an archomental, so swearing service to him would make Coal more akin to a cleric than a warlock patsy.
I think he, Imix, and Kossuth make up the Big Three of the plane of Fire. That being said, I imagine warlock fire-pacts are not strictly the domain of the archomentals. Powerful efreeti, for example, can probably sponsor pacts with mortals in exchange for fiery power, too.

I'm interested! I can promise posting (once we get running) at least every 2-3 days, probably every day most times, and very rarely I might be able to manage multiple times a day.
I'll work on character ideas later; not at home right now and my friend wants her computer back
Pants of the North!
Excellent, glad to have you on board, Bob! :D Looking forward to what you come up with.
I hope the adventure proves acceptable to the efreeti.

Nice to have you join, Bob!
Center, I ran through and considered a number of likely fire-focused warlock patrons, including Imix, Zaaman Rul, Kossuth, Marrake al-Sidan al-Hariq ben Lazan (sultan of the efreet), Tiamat, Fierna, and Amaimon (ruler of the azers).
Then I started to think about writing up my own unique patron, be it a powerful elemental, efreeti, salamander, azer, god(ling), red dragon, fire giant… until this one sounded right:
A phoenix. Seems a pretty good fit: a phoenix is a very powerful fire creature, known for rebirth through immolation – prospect and power that would credibly appeal to Coal’s situation. A phoenix is also usually regarded as a noble creature, unlike most of the other patrons I considered, so it might chime better with your good-inclined game.
So would it be alright if I introduce a powerful phoenix known as Blazing Lotus, the Rekindler of Dawn and Dusk?
That sounds awesome, Dunamin! I had briefly considered suggesting a phoenix, actually, but I'm glad you threw the idea out there.
Generally speaking, I imagine most Fire-elemental natives can form infernal pacts with warlocks. Efreeti and archomentals/powerful elementals are probably the most likely. Efreeti especially, being innately magical. But I am sure a salamander or an azer of sufficient power could serve as a benefactor, too.
At any rate, Blazing Lotus sounds like an excellent idea. From the soudns of things, if the Godsmen get wind of Coal and his plight, they might take a liking to him.

Great, I'll start thinking about fleshing out his background!
Anything decided on starting level and other considerations for character creation?
Yes indeed! But I want to see if I get more players first. While I'm glad to have you and Bob aboard, a two-player game is rather lacking. I'd like to get at least two more.
I figure I'll give it another week. If nobody else joins, I will consider either taking the game to a more populated venue or just abandoning it altogether. If I do move to another venue, you two are still more than welcome to join and will be guaranteed a spot. I'll keep you guys informed. I'd really, really rather run it here but you can't have a game without players.

If you're willing to have me I'd love to take part in your campaign CoA. I was thinking perhaps a human wizard who belonged to a sect/mini-faction linked to the Guvners that dealt with alchemy, primarily in the mixture of the six forces represented by the traditional inner planes (not including para-and quasi planes). This wizard, probationary name of Burton, had parents who acted as merchants moving between the innerplanes especially and as such he become intimitly familiar with the "pure" elements before they were killed in a freak accident involving a large portion of the plane of minerals appearing over their heads and he was left to live with his Guvner uncle in Sigil. Right now he would most likely be sympathetic to the Guvners ideal of finding the laws that govern the muliverse but less so with their desire for personal order. He believes that their is a physical, and metaphysical order, but that order is not a spiritual one that compels him in any way. An inquisitive, driven young man who sees this as a way to both fund his research and hopefully get back in touch with some of his parents old contacts who might be able to help him. Any comments, thoughts, or questions please don't hesitate to let them loose.
Mondays...
That sounds like a good concept! Very unlucky, what happened to his folks. Welcome aboard, Gunsmackit!
I'll just need one more (maybe another player or two after that, with luck) to join and I'll get some statting info up for you all!
A note about this game: This will be rather event-driven, so be prepared. One thing will lead to another, and I'm hoping there's a sense of urgency that runs through it.
Also, feel free to use this thread to talk to each other and discuss your concepts, and possibly hook your characters together before the game starts. You all will be first hired out of Sigil, so you can use that as a launchpoint for getting together if you like. After you step out of Sigil, though, 95-100% of the campaign will take place on the Inner Planes.

Welcome to the gang, Gunsmackit!
An idea on inter-connecting backgrounds might be that Coal once hired Burton's sect to create an alchemical mixture that could resolve his precarious situation.
That would certainly fit with his inquisitive nature. I'd also toyed with the idea of having him instead be a warforged who went by the name Formula who deserted the army of the dao in order to further his studies in alchemy. Alternativley if I play Formula, one possibility in the land of inter-connecting backgrounds would be that he and Coal served together in the azer army, or the idea that fit Burton would also work for Formula, given that he would have many of the same desires and ideas.
Mondays...
Formula sounds like a cool character as well - an azer and warforged as comrades in war would certainly be a working alternative.
I have a friend who could be interested in joining, so Center might have his final needed player.
Great! Glad to hear we might be able to get up and running.
Mondays...
Hello and happy new year! I am back for good now and ready to roll. I let things sit for a little to see how it all would work out, so I hope you guys are still with me.
Dunamin, I look forward to hearing from your friend. By all means, let him get on board! I have a couple people I will ask just in case.
Bob, are you still with us? Haven't heard from you in a while, though you might still be on vacation. Let me know!
I am writing the Big Information Post that details a more in-depth version of the game's house rules and rules variations. This post will also include the Hook that gets your characters on the trail and will include character creation information. Check back a bit later to see. I'll post a notice here after I've updated.
As an aside, I am frequently available to talk to on AIM if you want to discuss game matters, your characters, or just shoot the breeze in general. I am a rilmani, so I have a busy time dealing with the Balance sometimes, but I don't mind chatting with folks. My AIM screen name is, appropriately enough, Rilmani.
Okay, enough rambling from me! Off to write the Important Stuff!

I'm still on board. Back from my con now, so I'll be able to chime in on things (and figure out a character idea).
Pants of the North!
Ooo, I told myself I had taken on more than my share of PBP D&D gaming, but I don't think I can't resist a 4E game set in oldschool Planescape cosmos. Of course, that may have something to do with my own puzzling with 4E for that very purposes.
Let me think about a concept and get back to you.
