Neverwinter Nights 2 Server Follow Up and Direct Invitation

Hey all. A while back I asked people here if they were aware of the Sigil City of Doors persistent world for Neverwinter Nights two. Maybe one or two members here even checked it out (I know we do have one player from here anyway).

After some discussion with our admins, we decided to make a kind of official invite to people here, the full text, written by one of our admins, Mr_Otyugh, is written below.

Short-short version, we know that many here probably perfer PnP or maybe just forum based RP, but some of you might like to RP and perhaps run events in a CRPG environment built around the Planes.

We have a system where we allow regular players to gain elevated privileges on our server in order to run events for others. So, it doesn't matter if you prefer to be a player or a DM, both are possible on our server (unlike many others where it can take a long time to get permission to access the DM client).

Anyway, i'm at risk of simply duplicating what Mr_Otyugh has to say, so i'll shut up now and let him speak...

Quote:
Following the previous questionnaire, we felt it was only fair to extend a more official invitation to the anthropomorphic fans of the Planescape setting, in a far more avid and loyal section of the internet as well.

So welcome to the Sigil, the City of Doors! Surely not a place that requires introduction, but a link to our website ought to do no harm: http://www.nwn2planescape.com/

As it is not pertinent of me to establish the setting itself, I will instead establish the game of Neverwinter Nights 2. Neverwinter Nights 2 is a computer roleplaying game developed by Obsidian entertainment, by now it is a little dated as it was released back in late 2006. Why it and the first in the series still retains active playerbase is a design that's not often seen even in the newer games in development, and that is a capability to create and govern servers autonomously.

That is what you can make and represent in the game and server is down to the creativity, tools and talents of the people behind it. Almost each of the servers are their own gaming worlds, and unlike in MMO's the numbers of players is limited, this is good to not feel like a stranger in a crowded street to everyone and help to gain a more community feeling. And then there is the Dungeon Master client capability, allowing to create events on the fly and at least to some extent get closer to that PnP feel with some divergent narration.

In short, mechanics may not be the strong suite of the game itself, but it's not trying to be either. What it is trying to tell you is "here, have these tools, use them as you like and I'll get out of your way.", that also is why I feel it is one of the few games which actually support roleplay activity far more than most newer games, which claims to support RP, yet do little to inspire a player driven narrative. Better yet, it is a hop on - hop off basis, no need to wait for saturday evening to meet with players, sometimes you just feel "Nope, I want to RP now" and that is possible indeed.

Now I will mention a little about the server we are driving within the NWN2 environment, SCoD (Sigil, City of Doors). The timeline is set before the Faction Wars, as we felt the richest lore is found when the factions are doing their perfect imperfections to the denizen and their minds. We have something we call "EM" that is "Event Master", technically speaking it is allowing even players getting access to the dungeon master client, to allow more frequent and guest hosted events.

Interested, yet lack the game? Well you can find it in GOG for $19.99 http://www.gog.com/game/neverwinter_nights_2_complete it is unfortunately not available in steam any longer, and most stores in real life may also not have any physical copies of the base game and both of the expansion packs.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. We won't bite, not a lot anyway.

Sounds cool, but I'm without the time (or bandwidth) to try it right now. But I'll bookmark this post.
