Need a list of special materials/substances from 2E books

Since I'm working on expanded treasure charts, mining tables for Mineral, and the like (I don't care if the substance is native only to the Prime, Outer Planes, or a different Inner Plane).

So far I have the following:

--Adamant (Volo's guide to all things magical and the like)
--Arenite from Anauroch
--Baatorian Green Steel
--Brightice from Inner Planes
--Corals and kelps from Sea of Fallen Stars
--Eternal Ice
--Liquid Fire (Al Qadim: Caravans)
--Metals and gems from Volo's Guide to All Things Magical
--Vividium from Inner Planes
--Woods from Volo's Guide to All Things Magical

I also have Shadowstone *Astromundi* and Nephelium *Firestorm Peak* referenced by source, but not page or chapter.

What else did I miss?

Re: Need a list of special materials/substances from 2E books

Arjale, from Dragon #91, is a black metal mined in Phlegethos, Malbolge, Maladomini, and Nessus. Alloyed with iron, it becomes dajavva (the 1st edition name for what Planescape called Baatorian green steel)

Tantulhor, also from Dragon #91, is another metal mined in Baator.

Hellstones, also described in Dragon #91. A gem from Baator.

Oerthblood, mentioned in Return of the Eight and Dragon #351. Unique to Oerth.

There are more detailed descriptions of all of these materials on Maldin's website.

There's also dweornite, a magical gem found in the Horned Lands of Oerth (Iuz the Evil, page 37). The powers of these tear-shaped, blue-white stones vary wildly, with some extraordinarily rare ones even containing naturally-occurring wish spells. There's no explanation given for why these gems exist, but I wonder if it had something to do with the Battle of Pesh that was fought in the nearby Bandit Kingdoms.

Forgotten Realms Adventures names many kinds of gems and stones that I'm not sure appeared anywhere else:

The only other thing that occurs to me offhand is Blackflame, detailed in The Five Shires by Ed Greenwood (for the Mystara setting), the D&D Companion Set, and the D&D Rules Cyclopedia. Blackflame has some planar origin, though it was originally discovered in caverns beneath the Black Spires Mountains in Mystara. It does a lot of things, potentially, but mainly it's a black flame that emanates darkness and cold instead of light and heat. The darkness of Blackflame creates "shadows" of light behind objects that block it. Blackflame burns noncombustible items like metal and stone to ashes, but doesn't harm flammable objects like wood and paper. It does harm living flesh, causing cold damage equal to a normal fire's heat damage, but halflings are immune and can carry Blackflame within them without harm (which is why the substance is considered a sacred halfling relic). If fed ashes, Blackflame will transform them back into an undamaged version of whatever the ashes used to be, although it doesn't restore the dead to life. Halfling masters know how to weave together the light-shadows cast by Blackflame to create a web capable of collecting moonlight.

Re: Need a list of special materials/substances from 2E books

Ah, I was expecting more (the Dragon 91 stuff is a good start).

All the FRCS gems are also found and better described in Volo's Guide to All Things Magical, and is in fact, the source I'm using to add those stones to the DMG gems table using their non-Faerunian names when possible, and I can tell that the supplement was also used as the reference for the 3.5 DMG gems table. I've still got about 15 gems/stones to go before I finish, and some stones not listed in this source has also been added *such as the awesome benitoitite, a cobalt-blue gem that fluoresces electric blue under shortwave ultraviolet light*

I compiled the treasures from City of Brass and have noticed several interesting Fire minerals (seafire gems, mainly; the book suggests that similar gems exist on other Elemental planes), "white emeralds", "black emeralds", "fiery yellow sapphire" *I'm presuming by "fiery" they mean "play of color" like what is found in opal and diamond*, and "clear pearls". Holy **** there's a lot of good stuff in that book compared to Necromancer Games' standard fare.

I've also split up the corals into different groups and added Dominican Blue Amber *simply called "blue amber".

I also intend to add notes and comparisons on the pricing guide of textiles, gems, furs, and the like.
These are done by looking at the trade items charts and clothing in Arms & Equipment plus compiling all the treasure examples in 2E and 3x books and comparing them.
As mentioned before, I corrected the pricing on a few DMG gems-- Alexandrite has been woefully incorrectly priced since the 1E days based on the synthetic variety (natural alexandrite is one of the most expensive gems in the world, every bit as expensive as flawless diamonds) and jade (confused largely over the term, which refers to both jadeite and the less-valuable nephrite which is a serpentinoid mineral.). Good quality jade in China can sell for a crapton of money and is, in fact, one of the most expensive of the non-collector minerals out there. This is particularly true for flawless translucent to transparent sea-green jade and red jade *which is nearly as rare as red diamonds*.
Another thing I'll have to work on is setting-specific gems and special materials, deciding which may be found on the planes. I'll also have to determine prices for the corals mentioned in Sea of Fallen Stars-- many of those are very interesting, but not given prices, sadly.

After I work out the primary Gem table and pricing comparisons, I need to work on plane-specific gem tables and the like, which I'll probably only make for some of the Elemental/Paraelemental/Quasielemental planes and maybe cold-based outer planes such as Cania and the Iron Wastes (and should be VERY interesting.)

Re: Need a list of special materials/substances from 2E books

Which list are you referring to? Mine or Rip's? If you're referring to Rip's, then all that stuff is described in Volo's Guide to All things Magical, which used to be available for free at Wizards website. That's sadly no longer the case now (none of the 2E stuff is available at their site anymore), so I see nothing wrong with downloading THAT accessory illegally (just don't ask where) Once you do that, you can go to google image and look for pictures of the real-life minerals if the book description isn't enough.

Though eventually, I'm going to make a Gems chart that involves ALL the real life minerals from that accessory, anyway, with a glossary describing them and giving all the real-life colors. (Unfortunately, it may take a bit longer still because at the time I was writing several up, I forgot what the color for apple green was called, so I'll have to redo some searches Admittedly I put it on hiatus for a short time.)

If you're referring to mine however, I do have a much more complete list of both the 2x and 3x special substances, but many are not listed by page number *since most of the 2E FR/Al Qadim books I have are in the form of searchable PDFs*

Here is the 3x list. I am still looking through some of the books at times, so this list is subject to change now and then:

I think the 3e poisons were new to 3e. In 2e they had less flavorful names, like Type I Poison. In 3e they invented new colorful nouns.

Actually, poisons are described in a couple books, such as Assassin Mountain (which had mostly enchanted poisons, including one made from "the ichor of fire elementals"), and several in Pages from the Mages *none of which I've seen in 3x*

Nonetheless, the 2e DMG had really boring, generic names for poisons, and as far as I know all the 3e poisons you mentioned are new to 3e.

Re: Need a list of special materials/substances from 2E books

I'm well aware of their boring-ness in the DMG. I should have specified however-- with the poisons, I was wondering if any of the 3x books go into further description of what exactly they are, such as what a "sasson/e" plant or tree is.

How about Pale Designs from Bastion Press. It is a poisoners handbook, but it is 3.0.

Re: Need a list of special materials/substances from 2E books

Well, I've finished the gems table (with the exception of the "colors" section). What would be a good site to host it on that won't take it down in like a few months or 1 year and doesn't require that I make an account?

I'm also thinking of making a shells table. Problem with this of course is that you'd have to tweak the DMG tables to include it, and I don't exactly feel like messing with those. (It'll be an RTF file)

Re: Need a list of special materials/substances from 2E books

If you're open to 3rd party supplements, I'd recommend:

Aasimar & Tiefling: A Guide to the Planetouched by Robert S. Schwalb (Green Ronin)
Requiem For a God by Monte Cook (Malhavoc Press)
When the Sky Falls by Bruce Cordell (Malhavoc Press)

All three are good sources for exotic planar materials. Requiem is the best source on godsblood and pieces of dead gods, and When the Sky Falls is the best treatment on magical meteorites and starmetal.

Re: Need a list of special materials/substances from 2E books

What pages are the special materials in Aasimar & Tiefling in? (I'll definitely check the first two out as neither one have been catalogued in my index yet. For the third, I figured there were lots of extraterrestrial substances in it, but I'm not as interested in bolide materials as these tend to be Prime material-only substances.)

As for which ones I do have indexed, that would be the Violet Dawn substances (of course), City of Brass (naturally), the Scarred Lands materials, Ptolus, Arcanis Forged in Magic revised, and Andrecite from Beyond Countless Doorways.
