Maybe it's been done, maybe it's stupid, I dunno . . .

I was driving around today and was thinking (I'm a pizza transportation technician, a.k.a. pizza guy, so I do alot of driving) about the Plane of
Vaccuum and what type of group could call it their "home plane" (I know the Doomguard have a tower there, but it's one of many planes they run in).

I thought up this idea for a sect, I don't know how much it can be developed, or even if it's a good idea but I figured I'd post it in case someone wanted to run with it.

The basic philosophy behind the group is to become nothing. Lose all emotional attachment and material goods (that's a standard thing in some "real world" philosphies). Through the loss of everything, you'd "ascend to whatever". No emotions, no property, no desires, no thoughts, no anything. Wanting to "ascend to whatever" is a desire though, so you'd have to rid yourself of the desire to ascend . . . so that you can ascend (try wrapping your brain around that one . . ). It could be almost a form of disbelieving your own existance (or maybe that'd be a completely seperate idea for a sect).

People in this sect would come to the Plane of Vaccuum to be surrounded by the "essence of nothingness".

I can't imagine there would really be much organization within the faction. Any "want" to become a leader would go contrary to the philosophy. I guess those further along the path would be seen as "leaders" to outsiders, and maybe looked up to by those that are new to the sect (those that haven't learned that wanting to be like someone is going against the beliefs of the sect).

As far as a name for the sect goes, I haven't really thought of a good one.

I have yet to figure out why any PC would be part of this sect, but I can think of plenty of reasons an NPC could become a member.

It seems to borrow ideas from the Doomguard (slowly moving yourself towards nothing is alot like an entropic force I'd think) and a few other factions, but I'm sure it can be fleshed out into a rather unique faction.

Again, I dont' know if I can go really go anywhere with this idea or if it is even original (there could be a sect like this described in one of the planescape supplements I have yet to acquire), it was just a random thought that may interest someone so I thought I'd post it.

It sounds very much like a combination between the Doomguard and Dustmen philosophies.

Perhaps some early Dusties found the pursuit of the "True Death" through the application of entropic forces as the way to go...

Yeah, that's something of a Buddhist outlook (and therefore something of a Dustman outlook).

It's a good idea, though; the Plane of Vacuum as Nirvana.
