Limbo?

Just throwing this out here, does anyone have an idea on how you coudl possibly "modernize" Limbo?

Anarchs making more modern complicated things is the first thing jumps to mind. Of course they would have to be really powerful anarchs I would think. The main couple of "stable" cities would get a more modern touch, but I don't think you could really modernize the plane itself just because of it's very nature.

Someone can make me believe the contrary with a good enough idea of course.

(just bringing this up mainly because I'm curious about people's ideas!)

Re: Limbo?

I had the thought of making it a plane of Mandelbrot patterns and other fractals.

No fractals; they're very firmly based in the very ordered land of maths (though they do have some odd properties).

I'm of the opinion that Limbo itself shouldn't change at all; pure chaos is pure chaos. Some of the locations in Limbo, however, could modernise if their inhabitants so chose.

Then again, I've got a feeling that they might be reuctant to do so. I see the Githzerai as being somewhat resistant to the idea of being enslaved by bleeding-edge technology, and selectively adopting mature technologies where it suits their purposes.

Amish githzerai? ... oddly enough - yeah. I can see that.

The philosophies match - slow acceptance of changes only for the good of the community as a whole.

you could call it "The Simple Plane"

There should be a city of of constant change and hyper-consumerism, where marketing microfads exist for scant minutes and your social status is based on how far behind you are in hours. Only the god-star (the premiere) of this place is ever up-to-date on all fashions and trends.

That's certainly true, but I'm not sure it matters. The Outer Planes are more about what people believe: if fractals become what everybody thinks of when they think of Chaos, it might be reasonable for Limbo to follow suit.

But, as I've said in other threads, I have no strong opinion on the matter. It's just a suggestion.

You can program fractals to generate constantly varying dimensions. They still retain the properties of the law-abiding fractal in that they are always repetitive, but they illustrate the completely non-uniform basis of constantly changing quantum measurements which are said to reflect the flux of reality beyond the world of the subatomic.

A modern interpretation of Limbo might be much the same. Its patterns of evolving chaos are highly repetitive, but deep beneath that foundation of repetition is a quantum-verse of fractally connected dimensions that are (mostly) completely random. The subtle shifts are simply beyond the conception of entities who exist in the world of the large.
