Is Ruppel underrated ?

Looking though my collection now I realize that, while Diterlizzi is probably the greater responsible for giving Planescape its unique feel & style, something in his art always bothered me, even if I cant explain exactly what. I think it is awesome for depicting the sense of wonder of the Planes, but at the same time its a bit obtrusive to my immersion. Maybe because it fits badly to the way I perceive Sigil's ethos (a victorianesque city full of decay, bitterness and slightly macabre tone... illustrated by childish faery-tale-like art ? ).

(Besides, I think Lizzi's Lady of Pain is such a crap it should ve been cut out by the art director.)

In the oter hand, what really grabs me by the collar and catapults me into the setting, is the art of Ruppel. His planescapes (here using the term as analogous to landscapes, seascapes, desertscapes, etc.) are simply awesome! The Planes of Chaos Box Cover is great (as are the inside planar vistas), and so are all Box Set  covers, and his paintings that show up in books here and there too (the Eternal Boundary cover comes to mind, and the Hive ooze mud in In the Cage, too).

In conclusion: Ruppel doesnt seem to get nearly half the praise that Diterlizzi gets. Everytime Planescape aesthetics is highly speaked of, its all for Diterlizzi's skill (Ruppel doesnt even gets cited). I dont think its fair.

What do you guys and girls think?

I like Ruppel. I also think

I like Ruppel. I also think Adam Rex is underrated, and I've defended his work vehemently elsewhere.

But I'm a huge DiTerlizzi fanboy.

Same here. Huge DiTerlizzi

Same here. Huge DiTerlizzi fanboy.

The thing, IMO, that you've got to remember about Planescape is what it is and what it isn't. What it is is wonderous, awesome, and in alot of ways, alien. What it isn't is cute.

That's what I always loved about DiTerlizzi's art. It was alot of things. It was never cute.

Got any links to Ruppel's PS

Got any links to Ruppel's PS art? What I see on his website is pretty damn good, but it doesn't exactly fit my image of PS. I like DiTerlizzi's art because it's not precise or quite solid, which emphasizes the fact that his subject matter isn't mundane. That, and using a highlighter for a cat lady's eyes is simply brilliant.

you think that's a mismatch? victorianesque decay and a macabre tone seems to me to be very well suited by child-like fairy-tale style art.

Well, it certainly supports the paradoxal nature of the planes. Laughing

It's not paradoxical in the least. Try watching a film like Pan's Labyrinth, or even reading Alice in Wonderland. Fairy tales can be extremely macabre and dark.

I've always loved Ruppel's

I've always loved Ruppel's art, and i see the OPs point.

TS here's a gallery showing some Ruppel art for Ravenloft and Planescape. He did many of the covers, e.g. Something Wild, Planes of Law, the Planescape setting box, Hellbound, and Into the Abyss. The latter two always astound me.

Planescape, Dungeons & Dragons, their logos, Wizards of the Coast, and the Wizards of the Coast logo are ©2008, Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro Inc. and used with permission.
