Idea for new Planewalker project

Hi all, I was just thinking, does WotC have any plans for making a "races" book for planar creatures a la "Races of Eberron"? If not it could be something that we could knock together with contributors submitting bits of lore for their favourite races covering Origin, Ecology, Psychology, Biology, PRC's, Feats, Level substitutions, etc.

This method would allow contributors who don't have a great deal of time to still make meaningful additions to the works by covering specific areas. It'll also give us some great opportunities to discuss what is canon and what new stuff is consistent.

Because of the number of races involved we might want to split this up. The law/chaos/conflict division seems most consistent with other material but just doing outer/inner/transitive could work.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

I think this is part of what they were trying for with the Planar Handbook. I can't stand the PH though, so I don't think it counts. More to the point, Fiendish Codex 1 has an extensive look at the ecology of the Abyss and the second one will be almost entirely about Baator and its inhabitants (of course, judging from the except, it will include some questionable facts). It can only be assumed that they plan to do one on the Yugoloths, and possibly ones for other Fiendish races as well (everyone knows the Gehreleths need some love, even if no one wants to give it to them). Therefore, I'd suggest if we did this, saving the book on the lower planes for last and starting with the Celestials, who have only really appeared in the (aweful) Book of Exalted Deeds.

I was thinking that these books would primarily cover "playable" races, ie ones with ECL's of 5 or less although stuff on the more highly rated creatures would be interesting too. (I'd be interested to see who wants to cover wildren Laughing out loud )

Wildren are *shudder* unusual. Seriously, they were created by intermingling (read: zophilia) between dwarven petitioners and celestial badgers. I'm really not sure about them. Perhaps a better place to start would be more detailed descriptions of the races in chapter two of our new PSCS.

Or we could just re-do the races in the Planar Handbook in a way that is worth reading. I'd love to have monster classes for the various planar races that were actually usable.

Yeah. I figured they'd be the base but if we're going to come close to the level of detail seen in the other "races of" books we're going to have to split them up. I also thought this might be a good opportunity to diversify the races a bit - different kinds of tiefling, etc and to expand on some of the lesser known planar races (Maugs have always been one of my favourites).

You know, if you look at the various bits of fan-made material on this site, such a book (or series of books) is probably about half written already. I mean, there's a lot of stuff in the creature codex and the like.

Yup, we've just got to fill in the holes (and they are pretty big when you look for them). If we had to do the whole thing from scratch we'd have an almost unassailable job ahead of us but as things are it's more about establishing our own, consistent canon and inspiring people to fill the gaps in the histories/profiles of their favourite races.

This would give us an opportunity to bring together the crunch work people have done on stats & feats with the fluff and stories which are floating about the place. Plus we can put pretty pictures throughout - something for everyone.

Who's interested?

I guess I could help out with stats and write-ups, but it would be purely on a "when I feel like it" basis. My time is precious, after all.
