How to DM... Villains That Know Their Fate

This thread was a really solid question! How DO you DM a villain that knows their fate? You could run them like any other villain, but at the same time, there is something else going on there. Even if they don't explain their thoughts on the afterlife to the PCs, it can still be a helpful thing to understand.

So,
How do you form your villain's thoughts on this?
What elements of their backstory or agenda should influence it?
How much should their alignment dictate?
How can it change with their loyalties (faction, religion, w/e)?

I don't think the "aspire to become a deity" option has come up yet. Evil gods don't suffer eternal torment. Well, they might be annoyed; according to one of the PS novels, Sung Chiang is none too happy about being located in Gehenna. But on the whole they've got it pretty good.
