Great Pantheon War

Like WW2 imagine if every pantheon had an army filled with creatures from their own mythology, how would the war develop, who do you think would win?

Re: Great Pantheon War

Hmmm, I could see this working on the metaphysical/mythological scale as well as with actual armies.

During the varied divine conflicts in the realms it was noted that Mystra could deny mortals the power of magic, that Lathander could prevent the sun from rising over other mortals temples, etc.

In Egyptian lore, Osiris supposedly notes that there are beings in the Underworld who have no fear of the gods above.

So on the mortal plane you'd have gods seeking to control aspects of reality as varied as love and oceans, and on the outer planes you'd have all kinds of contests between exemplars and other servants of the gods.

Not sure how it would break down in terms of allies and enemies, unless it was simple Good vs. Evil.

A contest between Elven/Grecian/Norse in the Upper Planes of Chaos might be interesting...perhaps fought over the discover of new reality altering Words in the ruins of Pelion?

In Pelion the Egyptians and the Greek most likely would start the war. Titans would get another chance against the Olympians. Soon the Celts would join them. The Norse would be mercenaries with Odin playing both sides. After the Persians attack the Greek, Indians and Babylonians would be potential allies to the Greek.

The war for Words sounds great. Gods fighting directly would be too epic for a campaign. Possibly a wager between them, like the Trojan War. Mortal armies that consist of

Zeus' army: cyclops, erinyes, oread, cerberus, minotaur, harpy, nymph bards
Daghda's army: asrai, firbolg, quickling, barghest, bodak
Odin's: einheriar, valkyrie, fensir, ratatosk, kraken
Ra's: sphinx, phoenix, mummy, gnoll
Brahma's: asura, marut, deva, naga

I don't think there would be discreet sides like in WW2. I think alliances would constantly be shifting, probably between good vs. evil to law vs. chaos. You might even get the odd cross-alignment alliance to oppose one faction or another that might have gotten too powerful.

A huge side effect of all this would be how all the pantheons would probably start ramping up their recruitment efforts on the Prime. Sure, the war across the Upper Planes would be epic, but the real battlefront would be on the Prime worlds. A victory there would mean that the pantheon in question would have an entire world to draw on for the battle on the Great Wheel.

Another side effect might be a mass exodus of pacifist pantheons/petitioners to the Inner Planes. You might also see an influx of mercenaries from the Inner Planes. It wouldn't be hard to imagine seeing the efreet fighting along side a host of devils.
