Githyanki published sources

I know that there is an extensive list of Planescape sources on this site, but after a few hours of searching I don't see a list of sources specific to the githyanki and githzerai. I hope I'm not being presumptious by posting a list of most helpful sources that I've compiled while doing research for my upcoming NWN project, as well as a list of modules that focussed heavily on at least one of the gith races. Some of these were a bit hard to track down.

I hope that this information will be helpful for people interested in the Rrakkma Project, assuming a better list doesn't exist. I'm sure I missed a few things, but hopefully a few of these will be new to some of you. I look forward to any additions or correction you may have.

There are also two entries towards the back of OP1 Tales of the Outer Planes, under Githyanki and Githzerai, detailing plot lines for adventures based on each.

One More

Dragon Magazine #117, "Hounds of Space and Darkness", an article with statistics on "gith dogs" (what later became spectral hounds in 2E and 3.X), the kaoulgrim (for the Githyanki) and szarkel (Githzerai). They have some pretty cool abilities. I use converted versions of them in my campaign, in addition to the spectral hound from Knights of the Lich-Queen.

Excellent catch, Howarth. That's gonna come in handy. I would have never found that one.

Also, good point about the 3.5 MM. Absolutely correct -- they weren't in the 3.0 MM at all.

Yes, for this list I skipped the magazine info about gith dogs as well as lots of miscellaneous earlier info about combat with astral ships (armaments, tactics, etc.). Honestly, I thought the gith dogs were covered in Polyhedron, but you're right -- those are actually spectral hounds. All of this info could be useful to someone.

Spectral hounds actually come from the "basic" D&D game; they were creatures from the Dimensional Vortex beyond the Sixth Dimension that the Old Ones set up to prevent Immortals from venturing beyond, but were sometimes found in the Astral Plane on obscure missions for the Old Ones. They appeared without that background in the Mystara Monstrous Compendium Appendix as astral predators; it mentioned that githyanki sometimes train them. From there they ended up in A Guide to the Astral Plane.

It makes sense that the kaoulgrim from Dragon #117 are seperate creatures; they're described as dogs with hell hound blood, if I remember correctly.

Sunset World

The whole rrakkma thing does indeed involve the illithids, so maybe someone has a (somewhat) complete list of mind flayer sources...? I'm sure it's a longer list than those products mentioning the gith races.

LOL, yeah, I should have caught the "Sunset World" article too, since I use Ssirik Akuar in my campaign somewhat (players haven't visited yet, but many of my illithid villains are based there and on similar planets in the Dark Zone).

Just as a plug for my own brand of craziness, here are the illithid references I know of in a few d20 products others might not know about.

Guide to the Galaxy (Dragonstar) - description of the Dark Zone, a region of illithid-controlled space which lies far above the galactic plane (of the Serpent's Eye Galaxy), on the edges of the Dragon Empire (the center of the campaign).

Galactic Races (Dragonstar) - entry for the "Ith-Kon", physically pumped-up, psychically retarded two-face-tentacled illithids; can you say 'thid shock troops?

Imperial Supply (Dragonstar) - "Kjanoth", zero-G vacuum hardened illithid-kin (I would call them "illithidae"), used on the outside surfaces of Illithid Empire ships to repel boarders. Also mentions the "Dark Edgers of Kalibrig", a group of illithid technology scavengers based in a star system near the Dark Zone.

Player's Companion (Dragonstar) - Dark Zone Explorer prestige class (cross between a 'thid slayer and Jean-Luc Picard, sort of). Also a section on psionics with lots of goodies.

Unveiled Masters (generic d20) - Everything you ever wanted to know about "Illeth" but were (really) too afraid to ask. LOTS of good mind flayer technology, prestige classes, history of the IE, etc.

The "Yaggol" from Dragonlance Nexus converted from AD&D 2E (online source) - degenerate chameleon-skinned physically imposing illithids, trapped behind when the IE collapsed. They live in the jungles of Taladas in DL, but I have them on a former illithid-controlled planet on the edges of the DZ in my campaign.

I also use a whole host of Dragon and Dungeon issues (too many to enumerate), and of course Lords of Madness, Complete Psionic, etc. from WotC.

Thanks! That was indeed very interesting.

Also, I've become aware of a small mention of githyanki and githzerai breeding with humans in Unearthed Arcana 3E -- which as far as I can tell contradicts the whole egg-laying approach.

Well, presumably, Tab A still goes into Slot B, but what's different is what comes out after gestation.

So human male + yanki female = half gith in eggs.
Yanki male + human female = half gith live birth.

It's only the 'yanki that have eggs anyway, as a result of breeding with dragons, right?

Egg-laying animals have completely different plumbing, something called a cloaca. So there's no biological way that would work, for multiple reasons. Saying that it works by 'magic' means that you are throwing out the biological limitations, so you can't use biological rules to determine what goes where. It should be noted that no reliance on magic is needed for other normal interbreedings, such as human-elf.

It is never specified in the official published sources (any edition) whether githzerai lay eggs. It is also never specified exactly why githyanki lay eggs, although some speculations are mentioned.

The whole gith-laying-eggs discussion already has been kicked around quite a bit in many other threads, including this one:

The plumbing might be different, but Tab A still goes into Slot B. It's just that the details of Slot B are a bit different, and if it's a male, Tab A comes out of Slot A before it goes into Slot B, if memory serves. If that doesn't work, she can just use her hands on him, and then transfer the semen.

That would also make Githyanki monotremes, instead of primates. They'd be closer relatives to platapi than humans! Sticking out tongue

This has all been discussed elsewhere in several other threads. My point above was simply that interbreeding githyanki with humans in the way that elves interbreed with humans, as explained in Unearthed Arcana, can be interpreted as evidence that githyanki do not lay eggs in 3E -- which is in fact an accurate observation pertinent to the reference. If you'd like to start yet another lengthy discussion of githyanki and magical egg-laying, please consider taking it to another thread.

Actually, looking at Wikipedia, it looks like not all egg-laying animals have cloaca. Some birds don't, and dragons are generally closer to cats than lizards biologically (though the absence of external genetalia in dragon artwork implies that they do in fact possess cloaca).

We can assume that the reason that monotremes aren't fertile with placental mammals because they have genetic differences. It looks like Gith are close enough to humans genetically for fertile hybrids to occur, so it seems likely that even if the exact plumbing is different, all you'd need to do to fertilize a member of the other species is get semen into Slot B, whether Slot B is a vagina or cloaca.

Yes, this is an interesting topic that always gets people talking, but here is not the right place for it. If you'd like to start another discussion of githyanki and magical egg-laying, similar to the three or four previous discussions about the topic on this board and elsewhere, please consider having that debate in its own thread. You seem to have some specific views on the issue, and they might be better served in a thread all their own. I'm sure you can understand why starting that debate here isn't helpful to those looking for a list of published githyanki materials. Thanks.

Not sure, but should Planescape: Torment be included in the list? It is an officially published source of information on the contents of the Unbroken Circle of Zerthimon as well as a bit of Gith history, social interaction, equipment and linguistics.

I did think about that a bit, but personally I don't think so. PS:Torment and Demon Stone both contain interesting additional material, but they also both disregard the published materials for plotline purposes. As mentioned in the www.planewalker.com FAQ, Torment simply isn't canon. I won't pretend to be the decider(!) of what is and is not canon, or even what that term really means, but it cannot be denied that the games simply exist in their own similar-but-not-quite-the-same gameworlds.

Also, it would be hard to extract much of the reference materials from the context of the game, and what you could get would be secondary sources by definition. The text of the Unbroken Circle of Zerthimon is available, and it is probably the best candidate for inclusion in this list. Some of the dialogue is also available online. But that's not the same thing as saying that the games are good reference materials themselves. Perhaps a better candidate would be the official novelization of PS:Torment, but unfortunately it deviates significantly from the game, so that doesn't help.

That said, here are some interesting links to the more reliable of the few items online extracted from the games, for educational purposes only Smiling

A preview for the D&D miniatures expansion Blood Wars features Vlaakith the Lich Queen. Anyone want to critique the facts presented here:

Quote:

Vlaakith the Lich Queen -- You know, liches -- in and of themselves -- are formidable enough foes. But, if you take a deep breath and then take a look at page 150 of your Planar Handbook, you'll gain a whole new appreciation (and dread) for how absolutely nasty a lich can be -- say, when she's a githyanki lich (25th-level) wizard that rules the entire race of githyaki from Susurrus, the Palace of Whispers, in the city of Tu'narath, on the Astral Plane. (That city, for the uninitiated, is built on the dead husk of a long-dead, six-armed god.) So, I can tell you from first-hand experience, you really don't want to tangle with this particular undead lady unless you really have to and are very, very prepared. (Don't forget -- I'm talking RPG here -- I don't have the stat card.) So, all that scariness aside, the Rare miniature of Vlaakith the Lich Queen is an impressive specimen of prepainted plastic villainy. (For your edification, and to stave off any argument around your table, the name's pronounced: vlah-KEETH.) Slender and close to skeletal, the graying flesh and the blood-red eyes of the Lich Queen connote her less-than-living status. Her long, flowing white hair, dark gray wraps, and ragged cloak add to that not-difficult-to-make observation. That deep purple cloak is a fluidly draped piece of magical outerwear, the exterior of which is festooned with a number (thirty to be specific) of eyes. (The Planar Handbook lists a cloak of charisma and a robe of eyes -- my guess is that this is an artistic amalgam, or something that reflects the DDM version of Vlaakith [but don't read into that].) Clasped in her left hand is the archetypal githyanki weapon -- a vorpal silver sword. (Man, one of those things snicker-snacked my character's head back in college.) Resting snugly atop her head is what must be one of her two powerful artifacts: the Crown of Corruption, which she has worn for over 900 years, and used to keep all her followers (specifically would-be challengers) in-line, or dead. Her right hand wields her other astonishingly potent artifact: the Scepter of Ephelomon (which, in addition to a few other things -- like total control over any red dragon that comes within a half mile of its bearer -- serves as the physical representation of the pact between the githyanki and red dragons, forged by the Ephemolon and the first Vlaakith ages ago).

Full article here.

The online description for the miniature of Vlaakith simply repeats information already published in the Planar Handbook (as they mention).

NWN2, just like Demonstone and PS:T, is not canon. Even if it was, a video game is not a "published source" in the sense that I am using here. Owning a video game does not mean that you have direct access to all the information used in the game, unlike a book or magazine, so it is fairly useless as a reference material. This was all discussed above.

The intention of this thread is to gather a list of the primary official documentation (books, magazines, modules, and the odd web page) that contain detailed information about the githyanki and githzerai. By documentation, I mean something that people can obtain, read, and directly use as reference material to look up concrete details about the githyanki for use in their own games. Anything that isn't official, isn't usable as a reference material, or doesn't contain substantial and specific original content really doesn't belong on this list -- and in fact makes it harder for people to determine which items contain substantial usable information. Please keep this in mind, as I'd like to keep this thread focused on the original purpose. Thanks.

Quote:

Githyanki
The githyanki hold a minor outpost in Middle Old Shanatar called Gathchorof, in the ruins of the ancient dwarven realm of Torglor. Under their ruthless leader Frethen Harmswa (Female Githyanki Fighter 10/Psychic Warrior 6), the githyanki are making small inroads into the Underrealms, where they hope to expand their sphere of influence. So far, their expansion is tentative and focused defense. The soldiers of Gathchorof are distrustful of outsiders and unwelcoming to visitors. Rumors are circulating through the Underdark suggesting that the githyanki are looking for some sort of necromantic artifact. The illithids believe that the githyanki lost a powerful phylactery when a rift opened in astral space. The duergar whisper that the githyanki are seeking an artifact that draws the souls of the dead into the astral plane. Regardless of the nature of the artifact, the races of the Underdark are on edge. They fear an increasing githyanki expansion that will shake up the power dynamic of the land.
