ooc: I'm sorry - I know I just don't have the time right now in my final semester - and I think Username already noted that he's out for a few weeks. I've not a clue where the others went. How about this? Let's put it on hiatus for a month or so till we can get people sorted out? I don't want to kill the game - because I *DO* like it.

Sure, we can go on hiatus.

I have such plans... If it dies I'm just gonna post all of the little missions I had planned in this thread.

Just checking in to say I'm able to play again.

I'm glad that everyone agreed to put this on hiatus instead of declaring it dead. It's one of the most original PS game ideas I've seen or participated in for a long time. It seemed like it was just getting to the good stuff too.

I know some people aren't ready to play just yet; that's cool. If people can poke their heads in to say hi once they're available, we'll know when to start up again.

The normally relaxed, nature-loving modron outcast springs to attention with the precision of... well, of a modron. "Sir! Box-in-Bloom reporting for duty, Sir!"

A Box-in-Bloom t-shirt? Coolest! What could be better than that? Well, a picture of Box-in-Bloom and the Planewalker Idol icon might top it. Huh? You'll want to follow the fun of Planewalker Idol, right here on the PW forums because your favorite leafy cube is one of the judges! The modrons all filed out of the shop but not before A'kin managed to give each of them pieces of red and green candy that smelled of delicious fruits and were made in the shape of famous Sigilians. The slaad and his cab were still waiting outside. "Get what ya' needed, Master S.I.D.R.E.M.?" he inquired, helping the spiked modron onto the top of the cab. The rogues quickly and efficiently piled into the taxi wagon and with a snap and a guffaw and a noise that sounded something like a bird in a pasta-maker the slaad-controlled vehicle dissappeared into the Sigilian streets.

A'kin watched the modrons leave from the window. As they raced into the night, the arcanaloth smiled and pulled the curtain shut. He moved about the shop silently as a shadow, locking up cases and breaking down displays. Turning to the doorway he drew forth a plain key, quickly locked the single unassuming doorlock, and turned the sign on the door to "Out".

With all of this done, A'kin turned and strode purposefully towards the back of the store, a thin trail of ash following his every step. The backroom of the store was a small closet where the fiend kept some of the more strange and exotic wares, it was also where he kept some brooms and other implements and where he stashed a bottle of Krynnish Dwarven Spirits for when he was feeling exceptionally drained. This was not the room to which he retired.

Oh sure, it was the doorway to that room that he stepped through, and most anybody will say that if you walk through the same doorway twice you'll get to the same place both times. But either A'kin had not heard this saying or he simply did not care, for the room he entered was not the one that the multiverse expected him to step into.

The room was a rather large chamber made of stone. On the floor was traced a hexagram circumscribed in a triangle and candles were arranged around it. Moving across the shadowed chamber, the yugoloth strode to the center of the glyph on the floor and seated himself in a cross-legged position. The yugoloth closed his eyes and let his mind wander afar.

"They have come and gone," he said, at last in a sonorous tone that seemed to hit notes in octaves at right angles to the normal musical scale.

"Excellent, do they suspect duplicity?" another voice could be heard, but its source could not be seen by any eyes but A'kin's.

"It is obvious that they do not trust Eye and one seemed quite shaken by myself, but no, I do not think that they suspect anything specific as of yet."

"Excellent, excellent..."

The conversation stretched further and hours later the Friendly Fiend stood to his feet, shaking off a thin layer of ash that had formed on his fur and walked back into the shop, a jaunty tune whistling from between his canine lips.

The Hands of Time. Even in the darkness of the Sigilian night, the building was a sight to behold. The flickering streetlights of the Lower Ward glittered off of rotating gears and flywheels and pistons, the entire building was a vast device the likes of which the gnomes of Krynn would sell half of Mount Nevermind to study. The travelers were struck by how quiet the neighborhood surrounding the building was. Sure, the building itself was making more noise than a dancing tyrannosaurus, but the streets, they were silent. Located deep in the neighborhood known to Sigilians as Gear Run, the Hands of Time was usually bustling with activity at all hours of the night – it was the central meeting place for the rogue modrons of Sigil and served as almost a temple to the home plane of Mechanus. But on this night there were no modrons about. A few mortals were standing about most of them showing obviously lawfully influenced genetics, but the vast majority of Gear Run inhabitants were the modrons and they were conspicuously absent.

Yarrdulence stopped the vehicle and hopped down off of it. He helped SIDREM to the ground, after politely taking back his hat (which he had lent to the rogue rogue modron for the ride), and then opened the carriage door to allow the other modrons out. “Quiet as a foundry ‘round here,” Yarrdulence muttered, “Where did all of the other boxes go?”

It should have felt like a little piece of home, but it didn't and it bothered her that it didn't. She was reminded of a human expression: "It's not the place, it's the people."

"I attended the Sigil Familiarization/Acculturation Retreat at this location and I have visited on 47 separate occasions afterwards. This establishment operates continuously, but despite that and three well-documented occupancy trials, the probability of finding an empty seat here is only 36.476%, 19 times out of 20. It is therefore troubling that there are no patrons visible."

"Fact: We are here to procure the demiplane-locating apparatus."
"Conjecture: Perhaps the current owner of the establishment can assist us... if said being is present."
"Course of Action: Test conjecture."

Boxy walks to the doorway with trepidation.

The spikey box looked confused for a moment at the title of 'Master' before there was a whir somewhere int he back of the box and it approximated a nod. "Affirmative, sir driver. We have another location for you to convey us to?"

The rogue returned the hat with what - for a rogue modron - was almost a pout. He had, deep within his whirring heart plates, been enjoying holding onto it with one hand as they raced through the streets.

Sidrem looked around the place bemusedly. Then looked to the collection of modron around him. "Secondary hypothesis: Other modron units attended the Eye's speech as well and are therefore currently residing in the same inn where we were previously accomodated?" Sidrem looe dup at the driver, "... are your services available, with the same requirement for awaiting us before?"

Upon making sure their favorite driver would be around when they came out with the item, Sidrem followed course and walked into the place.

“Righto, Master SIDREM. Hehe, it looks like ya’ll are gonna be havin’ me drive ya’ all over the Cage ‘fore the night is through!” The slaad remained with the cab once more, whistling a jaunty sailing tune.

The doorway to the Hands of Time was a massive clock-face sixteen fifteen in diameter. As they approached the clock face split down the middle and opened with a loud hiss of steam and a grinding of mechanical wheels. The hallway the modrons found themselves in was massive and complex, no two pillars were the same shape and all were somehow in motion. A series of doorways, hallways, and plazas led out from the central hall and the floor was tiled in a complex mosaic representing the different planes of existence in an orrerry-like configuration. Each plane was mounted on a seperate piece of floor and the entire contraption moved (slowly to keep from disturbing pedestrians) in a complicated order. It wasn't as fancy as Primus's orrery, but it was damn close.

At the end of the hall was a large rather ornate desk, behind which sat a large rather ornate suit of armor. The armor looked up at the approaching modrons and put down its "World's Best Automaton" coffee mug. "Welcome to the Hands of Time," it said in an expressive, if mechanical voice. "How may I help you?"

"Greetings. Salutators. Please provide identification for future communicative association, armor entity." Then more firmly and slowly, "I am Kilojoule, a modron of quadrone type of nonstandard heirarchy." Kilojoule then slid back into its cog-riddled modron speech, "This unit of modrons is under direction of said nonstandard heirarchy. Please identify commanding unit in this vicinity."

The grey cube-mage stepped down from the carriage and stood on the cobblestones, relaxing as it slid easily into the standard query progression for identification of new nonmodron entities. Kilojoule couldn't have described the feeling, but it was comforting to have its directives so clearly predetermined.

Sidrem walked up to stand beside his companion - producing a slip of paper from a slot on his side to hand to the other modron. "Designation Sidrem. Our current purpose is to retrieve the item designated on this invoice. Item is owned by shopkeeper designated 'A'kin'. Additionally, item should be ready for pickup. We wish to perform item retrieval for A'kin. We wish any authorized designate of this department to provide item to us."

He blinked at AHG-4 slowly, processing the correct word for the situation.

"Please?"

Narfi, ifyou're around its your time to shine!

AHG-4 took the slip with his gauntleted hand and glanced at it. There was a noise as of a sword being drawn, the modrons realized it was the golem's equivalent of "Hmmmmm".

"We have the item. Allow me to contact the unit designated to operate the device and retrieve the item." The automaton stood to its feet and clanked off, the slip clutched in its hand.

The modrons waited for a few moments, the ticking of the floorrery (Eye-wink) counted off the time. Spot check. Moments later, the automaton returned with a modron of a most peculiar sort. (I'll let him describe hisself) In the modron's hands was a complex many-sectioned scepter with numerous buttons, switches, and gems embossing it. "This is designation Optimal. Its services are required to utilize the device. I believe this transaction is now at an end. Do you require anything else?"

You see before you what at first glance seems to be a quadrone. That is until you notice it's coarse gray skin, and the blue fur sprouting from its face. All over its body, where one would expect to see bits of metal is a substance that appears to be some sort of red ceramic, perhaps glass.

[Note: I am going under the assumption that from Optimal's perspective, all of the other Rogue Modrons suddenly and inexplicably disappeared from its awareness. Not into thin-air before its eyes, but when it wasn't looking they all left. Primus, if this is not correct please say so, and I can change this post.]

If one is understanding of facial expressions, and is accustomed to seeing them in beings generaly thought of as emotionless, such as modrons, one might notice a hint of both surprise and relief in Optimal's larger than normal (aproximately two extra inches in diameter each) violet eyes.

At that point the grey modron/new arival advanced the query,

Quote:
"I require clarification of designations. Please identify unit Optimus."

At this question, Optimal shifts its stance ever so slightly so that its box is slightly tilted. A blue eyebrow arches. A glass cog whirs. A second later, Optimal responds. "To this modron's knowledge, its identification has not transformed. Its designation is not Optimus, it is Optimal. To Optimal's knowledge nothing currently present is designated Optimus. "

Optimal's stance and expression then change back to their previous states.

"Misunderstandings of denotations aside, this is a fortuitous revelation; the local modron population seems to have transformed yet again. Now from a worrisome one to a more favorable total of greater than or equal to six. This is not quite as favorable as the prevous, larger yet indefinate and fluctuating state, but change is a good thing. Might any of the modrons now, yet not previously, standing before Optimal be able to change one's understanding of such population transformations?"

Ki examines the new modron, he had seen psions in the past who could meld their body with other objects, could this modron be one such psion?

"Are you a psion, Optimal? I have witnessed psionic techniques that can merge one's body with various things, mostly weaponry. The various foreign objects assimilated into your being would lead me to believe you are one of them..."

OOC:Ki trained in a githerzai monastery, so naturally there would be some psions there too.

Optimal turns to Ki. "Yes, Optimal does fall under classification of Psion. Optimal has learned to use the internal power inherent within all modrons to transform the immediate environment or Optimal's own mental or physical being with neither the need to use external catalysts, nor the need to tap into the energy of beings classified as Powers, philosophical concepts, or the environment.
"Optimal's subclassification, also known as "discipline", is that of Egoist. The term "Egoist" might be seen as ironic when applied to a modron, considering that the term "Ego" refers to a sense of self of which standard modrons do not possess, and most modrons classified as "rogue" or "outcast" don't neccessarily come to terms with the concept with either speed or ease; indeed Optimal can't bring itself to speak in the first person. Optimal does believe this will transform in time, however.
"An Egoist concentrates on the powers falling within the classification of "Psychometabolism," those being powers that transform aspects primarily of one's own physical makeup, but occaisionally it applies to aspects of other beings. The ability to merge with certain objects does fall within the domain of psychometabolism, however, Optimal has not transformed himself in such a way. Doubtless the assumption is due to Optimal's non-traditional physical makeup. This is due to a side-effect of Optimal's psychometabolic experiments while on the plane of Limbo. Apparently, such experimentation has caused Optimal to become infused with chaos-matter to a degree. Upon meditating to recover Optimal's internal energy, Optimal's appearance transforms. The outcome is beyond Optimal's control."

Boxy drops to the floor, and kneeling, scampers over to the Mechanus tiles, oblivious to whosoever might be standing in her way. At the Mechanus tiles, she begins to search for the spider and for any trace of where it might have gone. If she's unsuccessful, she then skitters over to the Gehenna tiles to look for signs of a portal or secret opening.

The joints in the stonework of the orrery seem perfect, there can't possibly have been enough room for any kind of arachnid to fit. The automaton watched the flowery modron with a quizzical look on its helmed face. It looked from modron to modron for a moment before restating its question. "Do you require anything else?"

Sidrem twitched - one gear spinning as Boxy went off in, what was to him at least, an entirely random direction. He tried his best to ignore the stimuli for the moment - keeping his attention on Optimal... on some Primes this would be accompanied by a slightly distressed 'I *so* didn't see that.' but Sidrem didn't know that...

"Unit would hypothesize that population changes are result of Eye modron's recently established secondary heirarchy in Limbo*."

*If I recall that's the right spot.

Please identify "Eye Modron" and "Secondary Heirarchy."

OOC: Thanks Enzo. It's great to finally be here.

Siderm blinked. "Eye Modron: Class designation monodrone. Position designation: project manager. Project designation: Secondary heirachy. Project initiation designation: One full peak-antipeak cycle in the past. "

"Project purpose designation: A heirachy of..." Something inside the box went *twang* "...'rogue' modrons. A secondary heirachy to primary hiearchy. A...." Something else went *twang* inside, and Sidrem twitched. "Family."

He blinked, for a moment silent. "... You did not recieve an invitation?"

"Negative." replied Optimal. "Question 1: How did the monodrone designated "Eye" notify other Rogue Modrons of such designs. Question 2: How does a rogue monodrone come into being? Question 2 part b: How is a rogue monodrone capable of rational thought?" An air of confusion seemed to permeate its words.

The poor lonely modron was destined to not recieve an answer to its questions, not at that point anways. For as its words hung in the air, a loud crash of lightning resounded outside. Rain began pounding the glass ceiling of the Hands of Time, drops of water found the cracks in the stonework and sprinkled down onto the modrons before, with a loud whirr, the rain shield extended across the roof sealing any joints or holes which were designed to keep the delicate machinery well cooled.

The, now wet, modrons were struck by the oily texture of the rain water and the acrid coppery smell and taste of it. Between the flashes of lightning (which were coming one after the other after the other) they could see that the rainwater was a deep crimson color, the color of fresh blood. Perhaps it was time to end their errands and scurry back to their homes to wait out the terrifying and unseasonable weather.
