[OOC: Hey Dread Pirate Smiling Good you’re back Smiling I understand it right that the Masked Gnoll leaves 5.000 on the counter (and not keeps 5.000 himself and leaves the *rest* on the counter), right?]

Ian collects the Dread Pirates share from the counter, and hands it to A'kin along with Ophelia's 5000, Blackthrnes 5000, and his own 10000.
"There you go." He says, his hand outstrectched for the gem.
OOC: Assuming A'kin hands it over.

"So, anything else you guys want?" he asks. "Because I think that, once we pick up the scrolls, crown, and suits, we can leave."

A'kin hands over the gem to Ian with a friendly, sharp-toothed grin, collects the money and bows slightly to the whole group. "Always happy if I can please my customers."

He ponders for a moment. "I'm not sure... have we been through with the scrolls?"

"Well, we were going to get one of the scrolls with Invisibilty Sphere on it, I think we also discussed getting Naruk a Spellbook, and after that you and Ophelia were discussing healing magic."
Ian suddenly turns toward Naruk. "Oh powers, I'm sorry. I meant to buy you a few more scrolls for your spellbook if I could. I still have some left, but I probably will only be able to afford the basics for you."

"Oh yes, scrolls of healing. And what other divine type scrolls do you have?" asks Ophelia.

"Healing scrolls... we had the Cure Friends scroll picked for you, right? One scroll, two spells, seven thousand gold, but part of what I give to you as a gift. Besides that, I offer you a bundle of five scrolls, including the following..."

He takes a deep breath, closes his eyes, seemingly browsing through his memories.

"A scroll with five Cure Minor Wounds. A scroll with two Cure Light Wounds and two Goodberry spells. A scroll with three Delay Poison spells. Two scrolls with each one Lesser Restoration and three Cure Moderate Wounds and one Cure Critical Wounds."

He opens his eyes again. Now many a cutter would give his soul for that, but all I want is a mere 4.000 gold - that's about half the regular price."

His wide smile shows that A'kin is all shopkeeper again, the events that just happened seemingly forgotten.

Clapping his hand on his forehead, A'kin adds, "Emergency Regeneration! Almost forgot! I told you when we spoke about the Cure Friends thing. It automatically starts healing the person the spell is cast on as soon as the person is badly wounded. Three times on the scroll, and it goes for nine thousand gold."

Turning to Ian, A'kin continues with his explanations.

"Sphere of Invisibility, yes. I assume you need more than one, in case you have to stay in Baator for a while - you never know when things turn bad in the Pits. I've got three scrolls with that exact spell for you: One with a single Invisibility Sphere for 700, one with five Spheres for 3.500 and one with four Spheres, but created by a Sigilian Archmage, for six thousand. Which ones do you want?"

Once more turning to Ophelia, A'kin continues his list of available items.

"As for other divine spells, I have a variety of scrolls... as you have seen in that one chest in which Ian found the black scroll... ah well, examples. What about a Know Direction or Purify Food and Drink? Or, very handy when escaping, Pass without Trace? Or when you get into a fight, a Flaming Sphere is always neat to have... while a Summon Nature's Ally of a higher type can be even better, if you can handle it in Baator. If you're powerful enough, a Transmute Rock to Mud can handle a whole bunch of enemies at once or open a passage in a dungeon or castle, a True Seeing is always handy, and spells like Sunburst, Regenerate or Storm of Vengeance are probably beyond your ability... or are they not?"

The risk of experiments... Charknathrol replies. This is why keeping to standard procedures is better. Ninety-nine valuable prisoners were wasted in process, too.

"What about this," A'kin enters the conversation. "Whatever you buy, I give you one of the scrolls I mentioned for free, as a special-special-really-special offer. You choose which one." He winks and smiles, then sighs. "One day, I'm gonna ruin myself with my friendliness."

"Dont look at me. I spent my 10,000 on the gem. As it is I'll have to dig into my payment to buy Naruk scrolls. And thats only because I promised to do that."

Naruk coughs slightly, then speaks to Ian. "This is really not necessary... let's just look what the spellbook offers, and I'll get along with that. Besides, it's not that casting spells is my only ability... I've got a well-working mind and a shlibbywibby trick or three up my sleeve."

He stops suddenly, turning slightly red. "Umm... that... shlibbywibby thing... it just burned into my mind when I was on a trip on the Plane of Ooze. I think I heard it a billion times in less than three weeks. Might slip out of my mouth a couple times more."

" In the interest of good relations, and self preservation, I'll help make up the differance on some of your healing scrolls. But Like I said, I dont have alot of money left to throw around. And I'll probably have to spred a little garnish sometime later today. No sense ruining a good theme." He says with a smile.

[OOC: I checked the PHB for the Listen checks. It's like this: If you, Ophelia, or you, Blackthornes, put a special focus on NOT being heard by the others, you're allowed to make a "Move Silently" check to oppose the Listen checks of the others. If you're "just whispering", trying not to be heard but assuming that whispering is enough, then it's just as Fidrikon explained it. In the latter case, please, Ophelia and Blackthornes, send the PMs you sent to me also to dread pirate swan.

On a side note, thank you two for forwarding! Smiling ]

Mr. Smith?

Duke Charper's voice appears in Ohalian's mind again.

We have some really interesting results here. This Charknathrol... well, there's two things. First - ever heard of that musician, Jaimee Dark? Quite a sick man, if you ask me, and wanted by the police. He robs dead bodies from hospitals, and with a special technical equipment, uses their voices as instruments - that is, he makes dead people sing.

The interesting part is that those, well, dead voices lack lots of the normal vibration of a living voice, they sound hollow and... well, dead. One of the sound engineers surely could explain it better. Anyway, this Charknathrol has very similar results. Put short, you're speaking to a dead man there, if you look at the voice data.

Second thing, and this is really weird... his voice changes our data.

Duke makes a pause, taking a deep breath.

I really have no technical explanation for it yet. The moment we record Charknathrol's voice, the record is exactly what we hear. But when we listen to the records, things have changed. The words are the same, but there are small details that everyone agrees were different when we listened to the original. And the amazing thing is, we've tried a variety of recording instruments, even going down to simple tape recorders, and it's all the same. Really, I've never seen anything like that.

"Feel free", A'kin replies. "He might have equipment useful for your travels on his body. But be careful, the 'thids often have psionic protections against thiefs and such."

Ian smiles like a child in a candy store and walks over to the Illithid, and begins to rummage through its belongings, carefully perched on his heels, ready to spring away at a moments notice.

Before he begins: "Hey, masked Gnoll?" He says, snapping his fingers to make sure he has his attention. 'If I start to act weird, do me a favor and tye me up or something? I'd hate to end up mind controlled and hurt people."
For free.

As Ian frisks the illithid, a few things are obvious at first glance.

A ring crafted from both silver and gold with a large, square-shaped purple gemstone is on one of the illithid's fingers. A black-blueish leather patch is woven onto the mind flayer's garments, and a strange tattoo about the size of a human thumb can be seen on it.
Besides that, Ian notices a small brown leather bag under the flayer's damaged robe.

Ian gently taps the ring a few times to make sure it wont shock him or something. If there is no effect, he pulls it off and sets in on the ground.

He takes a step back and pulls out his 10 ft pole, he uses it to push the bag out of the Illithids robes, and after that to push the bag open from a safe distance.

assuming nothing alarming occurs, he asks "Is anyone here well versed in symbols of arcane nature?"

Ian smiles sheepishly and rubs the back of his head. "Yeah, kinda. You've been such a help as it is that i kinda hoped not to bother you with this to much. But if you dont mind..."

Ian points at the design. "Can you take a look at this? I'd rather not touch it untill I know what it is, if anything. It seems odd to think an Illithid would sew on a design just cause it looks neat."

A'kin kneels down beside the dead body, examining the tattoo.

"This is unusual... the tattoo is magical. Mind flayers tend to despise magical items. It is highly unusual for one of their kind to actually use magic."

After a few more seconds, he adds, "The language is Phadaroth. It's spoken only on a single Prime world, and one particular city in the Hinterlands of Mechanus. It is a magical language, capable of shaping reality by merely speaking or writing it."

Staring at the tattoo, he ponders for a while, then nods. "This symbol means 'Star Dragon'. Unfortunately, this is all I can tell you so far. The particular effect of this tattoo depends on the thoughts and emotions the creator channeled into the sign."

He looks up to Lorevail, smiling friendly. "It's not totally unlike the Illumian signs."

"I've heard before that most Illithid consider magic to be a crutch, but I wonder. If something was powerful enough that it would help advance an Illithids plan in a way psionics couldn't, would an Illithid ignore the fact that it was magic?"

"Would you think it safe to remove the patch with the design from its garments? Or is that likely to trigger it?" Ian asks.
