Me and you have some special conection to it I think, and noone else mentioned the face talking to them, so I think this cube was ment for just me and you, ya know."
OOC: I may be wrong. But I'm pretty sure the MG meant that THAT was false. It makes more sense then the conversation with A'kin, since he mentions the face and all.

"Sorry about the assumption on my part, A'kin. I just like to be carefull when making deals. I've been burnt before." Ian says. Theres a moments pause.
"We should get out there before they get suspicious. And yes, I agree to the stated terms. As for the Illumian... I'll think of something."

"Okay, fine. Just one thing... since you said you're fine with a... magical guarantee to secure the deal... Aemoran Tanthraruul!"

It feels like a lightning bolt rushing through Ian's body, touching every single particle of his mortal shell, and infusing it with magical energy. It stays for only a second, but this second seems to Ian like minutes, painful and frightening... and when it is over, he knows that his lifeforce is linked to his mission, and if he should ever stop following his mission, his life will be drained from him.

"Sorry about the pain thingy, but it's simply the most effective spell I know for such things. It's based on a geas, but way more powerful. So, well, we can go now," he finishes with another friendly smile.

A'kin walks to the door, opens it and walks back into the store. When Ian follows him, he closes the door behind him.

"Very well," A'kin says to all in the room, "we've found a way how we can solve this whole situation without the Harmonium coming over here right away. That is, you can leave before I call the Harmonium. First we should finish our business, of course."

OOC: So the cube thing is hidden upon my person right? That is the impression I got , that it was hidden away on Ophelia before Ian and A'kin walked out.

@Blackthornes: As to the Bluff check, she isn't even thinking that you would lie to her. All she knows is that she wants the cube safe. But I will do a Sense Motive check anyways, because you would think she could tell if you happened to be outright lying to her.

Sense Motive: I rolled a D20 and got an 18 + 4 (mod from WIS)=22

OK, she believes you since you got a 28 on your roll for Bluff.

*This all happened before Ian and A'kin walked out of their private room, right?*

The Illumian replaces her money pouch and begins to sort her new scrolls carefully into a few different leather spell organizers with ornate metal cases.

"Are you sure that's the best thing to do A'kin? I believe that the Harmonium doesn't take well to mistruths if we say we weren't here to make a statement..."

"I have my ways to handle such things, my dear friend," A'kin answers to the Illumian, "ways that even a Guvner would agree to. If you ever get into a situation where you have to say what's happened here, just say the truth. I'll care for the rest."

A'kin steps towards a small cabinet, opens a drawer and takes out a strikingly red pouch. He turns to Ian as he holds it up. "Here we are. This bag has been crafted by the Great Weaver of the Court of Arlamour, in the Plane of Fire. It's protected against ANY intrusion, with the exception of looking inside or putting your hand in. Only the King and Queen of Arlamour can use magical or other means to take a look inside; and since the Court was... dissolved in ages past, that shouldn't be a problem. Oh, and, you said you were going to Baator, right? I think I have another neat little item for you, one that might keep you from running right into Baatezu traps... interested?"

"Sure," A'kin says, and it's impossible to tell whether he meant Ian or the Illumian.

Walking through his shop and browsing through another cupboard, he finally holds up a large skull - it reminds of a bull's skull, with horns and everything, just that it looks more... humanoid.

"There we go!"

He holds the skull up, as if placing it upon an invisible shelf slightly above his head. As he removes his hands, the skull stays where it is - floating in mid-air. "Wouldn't have thought that I'd bring you up again, Charknathrol. Welcome back!"

Welcome back...

A dark, echoing voice appears, as the skull turns towards the group. It begins to move, first slowly, then suddenly rushes towards the Illumian, stopping only inches before the Illumian's face.

Name..?

A'kin chuckles like a child. "Seems like Charknathrol has found an instant liking to you!"

The Illumian lets out an audible squeak, raising her hands in defense.

"Name? Oh, uh Loreveil, Akdavnel."

*Ophelia chuckles a bit at the Illumian's reaction. Then she puts out a warm smile to her and walks over to her extending her hand in friendship.*

"G'day Loreveil. I think all us cutters should introduce ourselves to this nice lady, who is in the same sort of predicament as we are in. My name is Ophelia, Ophelia Whispers. I mean, not to rattle my bone box, but we are all involved in this situation. Lets get to know each other," Ophelia whispers while waiting for Loreveil to shake her hand.

It's been crafted in Baator, and knows lots about the plane and its denizens.... so much that you can actually use him when you need a helping hand talking to a baatezu. Once he's attached to a person, he follows the person's commands. It's quite interesting he got attached to you, shouldn't really happen that way - even powerful fiends aren't capable of overriding his magic usually."

"Yet another preistess of your pagan gods. It's like this city is swarming with them..." Ohalian mutters to himself.

"So... anyone got any magic stuff to fix up whatever it was that that ghost did to me, with the life sucking thing?"

OOC: Yes, he just called the lot of you pagans. He follows his world's Christianity analog; different names born of different languages from different worlds, but the same theology. He won't hold it against you, though; heck, he's dating a Wizard 3/Cleric 1 himself (unless Joyblood her backstory I'm PMing him now). See, this staff that I have here, it dissolved the illithid... but it didn't utterly destroy it. That is, all knowledge it had is still stored inside there, as well as... well, its' life energy. And with that, yours. I think I am capable of separating your energy and transferring it into a gem stone. If we manage that, I have an idea how you can get the energy back into yourself. And just by chance, to do that, you need to go to Baator - where you're headed to, anyways. Sounds good?"

The Illumian nods to Ian. "Wee Jas and I have a certain connection of sorts. Of course I revere Tarmuid as my Creator, as do all Illumians, but I serve Wee Jas. It would be a long story to get in to for now. And as far as this...thing, Charknathrol? I suppose it will be useful. Does it have a personality? "Why do you need the cube? I have hidden it already, with some help from Blackthornes. If you are worried that someone will try to detect all the magic items in the room and find it that way, well.... then I guess you will have to let me hold the bag that it is in. Like I said earlier... I am not letting it out of my grasp...whoever tries to take it from me will have to pry it out of my cold dead hand," Ophelia whispers, looking to everyone like she means every word she has uttered. Ian sighs. "Ophelia. I'm not worried about someone detecting it here. We'll be long gone before the Harmonium shows up. But there is a rather determined group of people who want the cube. I can't tell you who. Even mentioning their name aloud can draw their attention. Right now, we are in a small area with a lot of high powered magical items. As you said, this makes finding it difficult. I have to have the cube in the bag before we leave or they will know we have it. When they can't detect it, They will only be able to assume that A'kin has it. He will throw them off our trail. It's part of the bargin we made."
"And I can't let you carry the bag. It's not that I don't trust you, but the scroll will be in there. All it will take is for you to trip and fall down a hill to get me out of a safe range. I have to keep that bag with me at all times."
He takes a deep breath. "If you're worried about its safty, trust me. As long as its with the scroll, you can bet your soul that I will do everything in my power to keep it."

I rolled 1 D20 and got a 20+4(wis mod)=24

Even though the actual number is lower than yours, I got a natural 20 (automatic success, if I remember correctly). I swear, honest to gods, I did roll a 20.

Correct me if I am wrong about the 20=automatic success thingy, ok?

OOC: Not on skills, no. That would mean that any 1st level commoner has a 1 in 20 chance of jumping 1000 miles. Because they keep trying to do it and hey, they have to roll a 20 sometime, right?

The SRD says:

Quote:
To make a skill check, roll 1d20 and add your character’s skill modifier for that skill. The skill modifier incorporates the character’s ranks in that skill and the ability modifier for that skill’s key ability, plus any other miscellaneous modifiers that may apply, including racial bonuses and armor check penalties. The higher the result, the better. Unlike with attack rolls and saving throws, a natural roll of 20 on the d20 is not an automatic success, and a natural roll of 1 is not an automatic failure.

EDIT: It seemed PB poseted while I was typing this. I cant find that +5/-5 thing in the SRD. PB, are you using a 3.0 PHB?

OOC:Not to ruin anyones fun, but would Ophelia resive a +5 bonus because the lie is a bit hard to believe?( this is in the SRD as well) I mean, there is no real good reason why Ian should carry the cube, not to mention Ophelia isn't trusting anyone else with it at all ,so she wouldn't just go around believing anybody about the cube. And if that doesn't work, I have a backup plan
*To Akin*
"Hey Akin, seeing as to how Ophelia expressed herself about not wanting to give up the cube and all, how about's we find something she can hold it in so it can't be magically detected. I know it would certainly help end this arguement, and I can't see any other means of clearing this mess up. I think we could come to an agreement, after all, I dont see why it would be hard to include that in our adventuring needs."
OOC: First of all, Blackthornes will make a Sense motive check to see if something fishy is going on, and secondly he will make a diplomacy check to help convince Akin to give us another bag.
I rolled a 14 + 12(sense motive), so i got a 26
I rolled a 13+17(diplomacy), so I got a 30

The Illumian shakes her head slowly. "You could also devise some sort of a contest to see who should hold the cube since both of you seem so attached. I would be willing to be the neutral party if you wish. I have no allegiances to either side of this argument."

"I'm terribly sorry," A'kin says, "but with the power of the cube - it appears to be an artifact -, I'm afraid the only containment I have that certainly hides it from magical prying is the bag that I gave Ian."

He ponders for a moment. "Besides... remember where you are going, and what I told you about where... the cube leads. Besides any specific groups interested in the cube, the danger of having the cube found there where you're going is seriously bad."

Blackthornes observes both Ian and A'kin, but after a short moment of doubt, A'kin's words assure him that there's no hidden motive here.

First off, no the lie is not hard to believe. Because with the exception of the non-specific group after it, its all true.

And if the scroll, and the cube, are in the same bag- and the scroll has to be within an undefined distance for Ian to survive, than its just too risky to have anyoneone else keep it. Ian explained this in character.

Blackthornes, you and Fidrikon's Bluff / Sense Motive checks were equal, so your PC has had his moment of doubt; but I rolled for A'kin, too, and his Bluff check was way beyond your Sense Motive, so at latest after A'kin's speech, your character should be calmed down. All of a sudden, everything goes pitch black for Ohalian. Only a split second later, his vision returns, but... different.

The scene is as it was; just that no single item, no person, not even the air itself appears like matter. The world surrounding Ohalian seems to be made of pure energy. Even the persons around him look like weird energy bubbles, with a complex circling movement of the energy that makes up their bodies. It is apparent that the greatest concentration of energy is A'kin; he appears to Ohalian like a living volcano, powerful and frightening enough to destroy whole landscapes.

The complexity of his perception is almost too much for him, and he's fighting hard against nausea.

ith?

There's a voice from nowhere; even the voice feels like pure energy.

Mr. Smith? Duke Charper from your J-Sys investigation team. It seems like you weren't all too wrong... we've found a strange energy flux in our system. It could actually be something like a wormhole. Can you... wait, I'm realigning the comm interface.

A second later, everything turns back to normal. The world around Ohalian has become a world of matter again, and the air he's breathing is no more pure energy.

Can you talk, Mr. Smith?

Ok, this part of what Ian said has Ophelia even MORE paranoid. That is about all she heard. The rest is just jibberish. I am not saying that his Bluff doesn't work, but I am saying that there should be a circumstance modifier in place for this particular roll. He just said Ophelia's WORST nightmare, and now she wants to hold onto the cube more than ANYTHING.

[OOC: Considering Ophelia's situation, I agree Ian's words make her even more paranoid. On the other hand, A'kin pointed to the problem of taking an item which grants access to a lost Abyssal layer right into Baator. It's obvious that a REALLY safe hiding place is needed for it. Also, Charknathrol already said he can feel the cube. If he can, the fiends might be even more capable to feel it.

Instead of granting you a bonus or something, what about this: Your character doesn't have to be convinced of giving Ian the cube; but she is convinced that the cube needs a really, REALLY safe way of hiding it from prying eyes. It's up to you how you play this out.

Just in case Fidrikon really doesn't have internet access until the weekend, I suggest if we get into a situation where his character really HAS to answer, we wait for him to come back - is that okay with everyone?]

[OOC: @Blackthornes: Yes, that's the way I understood it... but since A'kin and Ian were the ones talking, a roll against their bluff checks was necessary to see the trick.]

That can't come from us... all we did was opening a standard connection channel. Well, as standard as possible in our situation. I'm contacting you because I have good news - I think we found a way to connect to your perception cyberware. We are ready to test it with your artificial ear - if it works, we can hear everything that you hear. You'll see a transparent red light in the upper corner of your left eye vision, and you can switch the connection off by mental command any time. The advance for you is that we have an information team ready that can record everything you hear and play it back to your cyberware any time - it's like an instant memory, really, just that the team can even add comments and additional information where necessary. Also, it's the first step in an attempt of locating you... and possibly giving you a way to come back.

Shrugging his shoulders, A'kin turns to the door of his back room again. As he opens it, he explains: "I'm not really involved in this discussion, so I'll just let you clear this up among yourselves... meanwhile I'll see if I can help Oha... Tigerfury. I'm sure he's waiting to get his life force back!"

Without waiting for a reaction, he steps through the door and closes it behind him.

*Ophelia walks over to Ian, and gets right in his face, but far enough away that his prying, deft hands could not touch her and possibly take the cube from it's hiding place.*

"No Ian, I will not give you the cube for even the briefest second. Do you remember our first conversation? You told me about your "brother" and his interest in that particular item that was in the bar. You were lying then and you are lying now. I can see it in your eyes. BUT, I do believe you when you say we have to keep the cube safe. But just what kind of people are after it, hmmm? You want to go into detail about that? Maybe, and I said "maybe" I will start believing you more. Of course, that in no way means I will give up the cube without a fight. AND if, for some reason the cube goes missing, or "mysteriously" vanishes, you will be the first person I go to. Ian, why do YOU feel you should carry the cube? And I want a real answer this time."

*Ophelia is still whispering, but straining to talk more loudly than she normally does.*

OOC: Sorry, but I think this is WAY more interesting than Ophelia just handing over the cube. You have irked her anger, and now she doesn't trust a soul with the cube.... except for maybe Blackthornes. But, of course, Ian doesn't know that IC because he was busy talking to A'kin in the back room when Blackthornes and Ophelia had their quiet conversation, and when he hid the cube.
