Brilliant... the dog guy is a dissociative...
Game: Great minds think alike
"Im not sure that its a portal key, in the normal sense anyay. Im sorry Akin, but I dont think a mindflayer would go through all that trouble to make something only capable of opening a portal in your shop. Id say that it can make the portal pretty much anywhere, otherwise its not very useful. However, it might need to meet some sort of reqirments to do so."
Ian says, still looking thoughtfully up at the face.
"Hey Blackthornes, how good are you at using magical devices?"
OOC: as in, whats your use magic device? I dont think I have enough ranks in it to be able to use activate blindly on the item. And since we don't know the command word, that might be our best chance to close this portal.
OOC: I am still going for the illithid, sorry if I confused you.
OOC: Wow blackthornes, way to ignore Ian's question.
((OOC: Read and responded!))
OOC: Sorry fid, I am a little under the weather, I have the flu so I have been pretty light headed the last few days and haven't really beeen on the ball.... Im not sure right now, but when I get home from school I will check my sheet. I didn't mean to have blackthornes ignore you, that was an accident.
As Ian focusses on the face, trying to discern its motives, he feels... nothing. It seems like his intuition, his inner sense, is blocked by something from outside - and somehow he knows it's the creature above that is blocking him.
Ophelia grapples with the Masked Gnoll, has a quick conversation with him and then prepares herself for a read magic spell.
With the glowing staff in his hands, A'kin makes another thrust at the illithid ghost... and as his weapon hits the opponent, a golden flash of light fills the room for a short moment. As the light disappears, a golden mist moves from the shadow creature to the staff, being consumed by its ornamented head. At the same time, the mind flayer seems to dissolve - as if slowly being sucked in by the staff itself.
Without giving the events any further concern, the Masked Gnoll jumps behind the counter, hiding himself for another turn of the game.
The illithid, obviously in pain, screams out another mental call.
Irranumoranniloth! I am Shada'uk, bearer of Thum'Alath! I command thee, force these thralls under my control!
Only a second later, something changes.
Everyone in the room suddenly becomes aware of the illithid's power, its supremacy... and everybody realizes that all races are but thralls to the prime race of illithids. You give in, and bow to the commands of...
With a SNAP! the staff ceases to glow.
The illithid shadow has disappeared, and you realize you've been controlled without even the slightest chance of breaking free.
The face in the portal still exists, watching you with no obvious emotion.
Sits there, rubbing his head.
I hate Illithids. I really do. At least I can think that.
"So.... What now?"
OOC: We were released from the mind control when the Illithid was sucked into the staff, right?
[OOC: Exactly!]
A'kin shakes his head. "What a mess."
He takes a deep breath, then gives everyone a wide smile. "I'm really sorry for the confusion, everyone. I usually don't allow that my customers are drawn into such troublesome things. I really have to apologize - but of course, it was also your choice of diving into the battle. Not that I'm angry about that, but next time, which hopefully will never happen, please just relax and let me do the cleaning up. I have my ways of dealing with troublemakers."
A'kin is all the friendly shopkeeper again, acting as if nothing serious has just happened.
Both Naruk and the Harmonium officer come out of their hiding places, slowly taking a look around the shop and staring up into the giant face in the portal.
the masked gnoll relizing he's still behind the counter slowly rises up with a slight silly smile under his mask.
"A'kin....you weren't it.......i was it......but you made the tag......POWERS ABOVE!!!!A'KINS IT!!!! RUUUUUUUUUN!!!!!!"
He gets out from behind the counter, takes a quick dash, then haults.
"I'm done with this game."

OOC: So what does my Read Magic reveal about the portal key?
[OOC: @Ophelia: You made the grapple attack vs. the Masked Gnoll; if I'm not completely mistaken, casting a Read Magic would be your next round's action, right? That's why I said your PC is "preparing" the spell...]
OOC: Yes, I got a little confused there, heh. I do have two actions and all, but I guess grappling (or trying to as the case would be) and then talking would take up my actions?
OOC: Ophelia, you have the following options in d20:
1. 1 full round action
2. 1 standard action and 1 move action
3. 2 move actions
Attacking more than once requires a full attack, which is a Full Round action. Casting most spells requires a Standard action. You can't do both in the same round.
Joyblood: Have I gotten my max HP back? If not, he's going to mention it to the people assembled.
What the fuck was that?
[OOC: @nick: No, you're still drained. To your PC, it feels like part of his inner fire, his lifeforce, was taken away, and it actually feels like a permanent state.]
All of a sudden, A'kin halts, and his jaw drops open. "Thum'Alath?" He looks upwards at the face, and somehow seems almost scared.
"Has the illithid said, bearer of Thum'Alath? I know that name..."
"I'm pretty sure thats what he said. I take it that's bad?" Ian asks.
I've never seen him this concerned about an artifact before. I mean... this is A'KIN. By now, he should be showing us his collection of Thum'Alath, arranged by size and color.
"Anything we can help with?"
"Thum'Alath," A'kin explains, "was the name of an Abyssal layer. One day it simply disappeared; not even the powers knew what happened to the sodding place."
He takes another look at the face above. "I have a guess now what happened to it... and to its lord."
"That guess wouldn't happen to run along the lines of the entire Abyssal layer being sealed off, would it? I mean, If all planar travel to a planar layer was cut off, with the only way in or out reqiring the use of a specific item. Like that for instance." Ian says, pointing at the Cube. "That might explain where that portal leads to, and where those slime creatures came from, right?"
Ian looks up at the Face, and asks. "Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong."
"So... um... I think the ghost thing ate like a little bit of my soul or something, and I don't think it'll heal on its own. Would any of you guys be able to use your magic to help fix it?"
"Almost... right."
The giant eyes move from Ian to A'kin, and a slight smile appears in the face.
"Athlamunak, A'kin. I am pleased to see you alive."
At that moment, Ophelia's spell goes off.
In her magical vision, she sees the cube surrounded by a strong blue light, stronger than she has ever seen it with any magical item before.
The light grows, as does the cube; and just a moment later, she finds herself flying at incredible speed over a dark brown landscape, deep mud with only the occasional small areas of grass or dead bushes.
Suddenly, she finds herself on the back of a dark grey dragon lich, placed in a saddle crafted from pitch black wood. The dragon roars, flying towards a gargantuan palace in the distance, a building miles wide and with towers that reach high above the dark red clouds.
From somewhere deep within the castle, Ophelia hears a soft voice, almost singing.
Welcome, Ophelia Whispers, welcome to our world. Welcome to our dance, be a welcome guest...
Suddenly, the dragon changes direction, roaring upwards into the clouds, until nothing but red mist surrounds her. As the seconds pass, the mist slowly dissolves, and Ophelia finds herself back in A'kin's shop.
[OOC: To everybody else, Ophelia just stood there, staring at the cube, until she seems to snap out of some kind of trance.]
Ian walks over to Ohalian and whispers, so as not to disrupt the face's conversation with A'kin. "Don't worry. Ophelia's a druid, there good at the whole healing thing. Just hope that thing didn't steal a peice of your actual soul. That's never good." Ian smailes in a way thats not exactly reassuring, and steps back.
*to Ian*
" sorry Ian, I don't really have a nack for those types of things, I'm good at lies and the lot. So is that thing a level of the Abyss, or is he the level's ruler? And do you know what he wants?"
*To the face*
" Why are you here?"
OOC: sorry it took so long, I forgot all about it
Ophelia snaps out of her trance and blankly looks around. There is a single tear falling down her cheak. She thinks, I have never fealt so wanted, so needed. She stands up slowly, as if still in the trance of her vision. She slowly looks around at everybody, meeting each person eye to eye.
She then looks at the face in the ceiling in the eye and asks, "Can you take me there? To where I saw? Or are you what crumbled that place?!" She says the last sentence with a bitter edge.
OOC:@ Joyblood: Thanks! Great vision!
I am that place, and that place is me. And you will find your way there, Ophelia Whispers. In time...
A'kin laughs nervously.
"Athlamunak, Highness. I am comforted by your Highness remembering an unimportant shopkeeper like me."
The dark voice also appears in blackthornes mind, just as the conversation takes place.
You, Blackthornes, will find your answers soon. You will play a special role in what is to come. Athlamunak, Blackthornes. Athlamunak.
"So... how do we get you out of there?" Ian askes the face. "Seems to me, you guys must be wanting out of there more than anything."
The face smiles, looking at Ian.
A planewalker, and yet a clueless...
"What do you mean by that? You want to stay where you are?"
A'kin waves hastily, trying to silence Ian. "Just... stick to what you know. Fine? Fine", he says nervously.
Despite al that's going inside The Friendly Fiend, the shop still looks just fine from the outside.
A red haired woman steps in through the door, beginning a greeting "Hello....Oh?" She stops upon seeing quite a few people, along with A'kin and (possibly) the face from the ceiling. She takes half a step back "Perhaps this is not a good time...."
((OOC: Hi guys! I wasn't sure if I should write out a big long description when I can just post a URL. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/princessbunny99/Illumian.jpg
Ian walks over with a finger to his lips.
"A'kin is currently in a conversation with some... long distance customers. He should be done soon. Until then, keep an eye peeled. I think we finally killed it, but It's fooled us before." He says quietly.
As Ian turns to walk away, he suddenly turns back to her and whispers a bit more loudly. "See that black scroll over there? Don't touch it. And dont step in that goo on the floor either. Just in case." He turns and slinks back over near Ohalian.
OOC: Welcome to the game. That should make your character sufficiently paranoid to join right in!
Ophelia slowley looks to the woman who just entered the shop, see's that she doesn't seem to be a threat (at least not right now ). She turns her watery eyes twards the ceiling again, looks it straight in the eye, and whispers to it, "How do you know A'kin? I can guess, but I would rather hear it from you, Athlamunak." She holds the portal key to her cheast and turns back to her elven form. "What would you have with us, Athlamunak? Tell us of your intentions."
Then she whispers under her breath so that no one can really hear it properly (except maybe the face in the ceiling), "Athlamunak." As a word too often repeated, it burrows into her mind to find a permanent place there.
She lifts her left arm and lets Hoot walk down to her forearm, and then tells Hoot to go onto the coat rack by the door, and asks him to tell her if anybody else is going to come into, or is coming into the store. Lastley, she asks Hoot what kind of vibe he is getting from this red-head that just walked through the door.
(She talks to Hoot mentally, through their link, not outloud, btw).
OOC: Just out of curiousity... in the picure, you have floating symbols around your head. Are there just kinda... you know... there? Our are they spinning or moving at all. Or is it some form of hat?
OOC: Like this, Fidrikon.
EDIT: Huh. That page didn't have a physical description of them on it, and I can't find the one that did (along with their stats). Still got decent info, though, so I'll leave it up.
I wonder if the girl's related to those dabus things?
"So, if this things one of the tanarri, and we're going to Baator, why don't we take advantage of that Blood War thing they've got going on, and release them on whatever layer we're going to to create a disturbance before buggering off to acquire our target?"
He'll be running a full sensor sweep on the face and the girl who just got here as he says this.
(OOC: OH silly me, yeah, she's an illumian, so theres about 7-10 luminous sigils floating around her head, endlessly circling, giving off the same amount of light as a candle. There's two brighter ones that if anyone has a Spellcraft (DC 15) I can tell you the meanings of.
And Ophelia, what is Hoot looking for exactly? I'll send it in a PM ))
Ian closly watches A'kin as Ohalian speaks, and again when he says the next line. "I guess thats really up to them, isn't it? If they want to stay where they are, who are we to go in and bust up a fiends good time?
Meanwhile, in Ian's head...
DAMN! DAMN DAMN DAMN! Of course we could use this to our advantage, fool. But it works best if we make it seem like their idea.
Oh well. Have to play with the cards I've been dealt.
((OOC: Oops! That remark for Ophelia goes for Olihan too...What exactly are you scanning for and I'll send it in a PM?))
[OOC: Your HP (current and maximum), that fact that your heart is beating and blood is flowing, any weapons, explosives, electronics, or chemicals on your person.
OOC:@PB: Hoot is looking for anything strange showing (like the sigils around your head, or any obvious weapons). Is he getting an undead vibe from you? An evil vibe from you? A good vibe from you? A strange vibe from you? A dangerous vibe from you? A safe vibe from you? etc, etc. That is all he can get, is that type of thing from his animal senses. If you can think of anything else he would catch on to, let me know in your PM to me, ok?
In the midst of the discussions, the female Harmonium officer rushes in.
“Halt, everybody, in the name of the Harmonium! I have quietly observed all that has happened so far, and if that item is truly a key to an Abyssal layer, and works within Sigil without a normal gate nearby, it HAS to be studied by the wise members of the Fraternity of Order, to secure order and peace in our beloved city. So, it is my duty as Harmonium Officer Lourna Throme to confiscate this cube. Hand it over to me right now… please.”
As she begins her speak, A’kin’s eyes go wider and wider, his hands waving heavily to make her stop. The eyes of the face above turn to slits, and just a second later, the Harmonium officer bursts up in red and blue flames… leaving nothing but ashes only another second later.
Understand, mortals, that I do not care about you. And you, A’kin, know that I will not spill your secrets. To me, at this day, you are nothing but a humble shopkeeper. Make sure things stay that way.
With that, the portal above gets darker and darker, until the ceiling has turned pitch black… and then you realise the portal is closed, and what you see above is really just the ceiling, its wooden girders turned black.
[OOC: @nick: Scanning the face showed only a slightly higher amount of energy at the ceiling than usual, but besides that, the sensors just detected the ceiling itself.]
Ian sits there, open mouthed, for a few moments. He then says, in a voice loud enough for everyone in the shop to hear easily.
"All in favor of leaving this artifact in the capable hands of Akin, say aye!
AYE!"
We already have one artifact that burns people alive. We don't need two... I don't even want the first one.
"Ah, well, I can surely do this," A'kin says with a smile - once again all the friendly businessman that he's known as. "Of course, first of all, we'd have to contact the Harmonium, and naturally all of you have to stay here for the interrogation that will not be avoidable. I mean, after all, a Harmonium officer has been killed."
He takes a deep breath, taking a look around. "And then we have to talk about the damage in here... of course, only those things that you destroyed directly. At first glance, considering all the things burned or hit, I'd guess we are somewhere close to two hundred and fifty thousand gold pieces. Naturally, if that's beyond your budget, I'm sure the Harmonium knows how to handle the situation. Or what do you think?"
The red haired Illumian takes another step back from the door, being careful not to disturb the remains of the officer. "Really...I think I should come back another time to make my purchases...You seem to have quite a bit on your hands at the moment, A'kin..."
"Oh, my dear friend and welcome customer, I'm SO sorry that you came in at just the wrong moment, but I'm afraid that now you're, at the very least, a witness to the situation, so please just stay where you are. Besides, I'm convinced my wonderful friends here and I can solve this situation in but a minute. Just... take your time, and, take a look at that blue cupboard right behind you, there's a couple dozen little magical trinkets in there, you can choose one for free, as a thank you for cooperating. Thank you!" he says with the friendliest smile you've ever seen in a face with such sharp teeth....
*thinking to himself*
What did he mean about finding my answers.......and I will play a roll in what is to come? I am confused
*To all*
"wow, I'm not sure what to think about what just happened. So, we have to stick around for an interagation.......I hope the harmonium has no connections with the gaurds in Amn, or I might be in a heep o' truble, but there is no doubt in my mind that I can get out of it."
*to Ian*
"I don't know if we should leave the cube Ian. The face said something about me finding the answers to my questions, and he also said there is something I will do that is important..... for alll we know we may NEED that cube to fullfill our destinys. Also he said his name, followed by min, and then his again. To me, he is saying I may in some way need him.... I think we should keep the cube"
