[OOC: To keep the game going, I'll take over Sejanus once more, hoping Dialexis will be back soon.]
Sejanus opens his large hands, and allows Blackthornes to step on them. He easily lifts the tiefling up to the door in the ceiling.
[OOC: To keep the game going, I'll take over Sejanus once more, hoping Dialexis will be back soon.]
Sejanus opens his large hands, and allows Blackthornes to step on them. He easily lifts the tiefling up to the door in the ceiling.
Ian sighs, and stands up from his crouch.
I see... well, given the alternative it looks like I'm going to have to do something stupid.
OOC: Ian takes a few seconds to compose himself, and tries to Shadow Jaunt again, this time in the direction of the wall. Fully expecting to run into something nasty on the other side, Ian is prepared to drop back into the Abyss if he sees something headed for him. Although he will do his best to get at least ten feet unless there is something directly in his path.
What Ian sees as he attempts another Shadow Jaunt is utterly different from what he expected: The world around him literally deconstructs, falling into a thousand black pieces. He floats in nothingness, with shards of reality everywhere around him. The strangest thing is that the pieces are not static - the reality he sees in them keeps going on.
Actually, Lomax states with a slight amusement, this was far more clever than I thought it would be.
Ian looks around and frowns.
Well this is unexpected.
OOC: He will slowly attempt to make his way past the fragments to his destination, taking all possible precautions to avoid coming into contact with the fragments.
*Blackthornes will push at the door above his head*
[OOC: @Blackthornes: Please describe what's going on in your character while he's doing that!]
As Ian moves, Lomax describes what has happened. The Abyssal isle these creatures tried to create was not finished. As you slipped into the shadows, you entered a piece of reality that was not fully formed yet. The effect is that, now, you're in the shadows somewhere between the isle and the first layer of the Abyss. While I don't know everything, I believe this is the first time such a thing happened... it feels like reality itself is unsure what to do. Time for experiments, my friend.
"Be careful Blackthornes, I'm still not fully convinced that trapdoor isn't trapped."
Meanwhile, Azure knotches another cold iron arrow and watches the tunnel.
What sort of experiments? Keep in mind, my companions are in a less than ideal situation.
"I would, but it's looking like we dont have much time for "careful" at the moment."
*Blackthornes will push the hatch up, putting his palms flat on the door, avoiding the lightining bolt as much as possible.*
[OOC: @Blackthornes: You ignored my question
Please describe what's going on in your character while he's doing that!
Referring to the feeling Blackthornes has in the overall situation!
]
*Blackthornes thinks to himself*
"Well, I hope Ian is on the other end of this door. If we have to deal with more tanari today, I don't know what I'll do. I gotta avoid that lightining bolt, I have a wierd felling about that little thing. I just hope that blasted tower is at the other end of this door"
OOC: hopefully that works, I have absolutely no idea what you mean by that.
Watching the tunnel, Azure notices five figures coming closer - slithering phantom mariliths approaching the group quickly. They are about seventy yards away from the group.
As Blackthornes tries to open the door, a disembodied female voice appears. "Greetings, traveller!"
The voice is that of a young woman, giving the impression of someone very cute and happy. "I am Fathii, a spell personality, and keeper of the door you are trying to open. I sense that you are trying to escape fiends, which is exactly what the room behind this door is meant for. But, only mortals can open the door, and while I do sense that you are mortal, I can also sense that you are a fiend. Of course, I find this very confusing. Could you explain this, please?"
Lomax makes a strange sound in Ian's mind, something in-between a giggle and a yawn.
I think they will come along fine for the moment. You should find out how to return to the original layer where your friends are. There are three things you can try... experimenting with the shards, or finding something in the darkness ahead, or a combination of both. Realize that, while you experiment, you do not only find out how things work in this in-between-reality - with your experiments, you SHAPE how things work. You can use that to your advantage.
*blackthornes looks puzzled, but for the sake of time just answers outloud.*
"Well, I know little of it either. I, myself, am no fiend. Though, I have fiendish liniage. I think that one of my far off family members was attacked and seeded by a fiend, but, of course, this cannot be proven. I am always looking for the answer to my heritage, but, so far only blanks."
As fascinating as the shards are, they're probably connected to the Abyssal Isle. I'd say my best bet would be to get back to a more 'standard' area of shadow, and pop into where I meant to go the first time. Exiting the plane of shadow is normally fairly simple, I've done it before.
Ian stops and tries a variety of mental exercises to see if he can 'will' the shards to move or fade away. Given any sort of success, he will attempt to clear a path, in the direction of the wall he saw before (where the tunnel leads).
"Now this is interesting," Fathii replies, "I had no information fiends and mortals can spawn offspring. I see you are a bit under time pressure, so I'll make this quick: Is there any fiend you call master? Do you serve the commands of a demon, devil or other fiendish creature, or do you serve someone who does so himself or herself? Do you strive for any kind of fiendish power yourself? Have you sold your soul, or would you do so?"
As Ian focusses on the shards, he succeeds in making them move by his will alone - although the process takes much mental strength, and he can't move them more than a few inches at once. It is enough to clear a path for him, though.
Making any of the shards fade away doesn't succeed, although it seems to him as if the "reality pictures" he can see in the shards turn slightly grey-in-grey for a split second.
Moving through the darkness, Ian soon comes into an area of... well, it's best called "shadow mist". It looks as if the darkness is covered by more darkness, threads of shadow that move through the dark nothingness.
Somewhere to his left, Ian suddenly realizes another shape that hasn't been there before. It's just far enough away that one could think it just came into sight, but Ian is convinced it wasn't there before.
Strangely, no beam of light appears as Ian activates the stone - and yet the object he noticed shines up, as if emitting a light of its own.
First, he thinks the object he sees is an egg-shaped stone, about four yards high. At a closer look, Ian realizes this "egg" consists of the same "material" as the reality shards he left behind - it's just like watching reality transported on an egg-shaped surface.
Fascinating, Lomax says. That's how Abyssal isles look from the outside. I assume we're the first ones to ever see that. Isn't that an interesting feeling?
Ian slips a hand into a pouch on his belt, and pulls out the Gemstone of Gathari.
A light that only I can see, and which peirces all darkness. Ian thinks to himself, recalling A'kins words. To think that was earlier today. Time sure flies...
Without a word, he activates it, and shines the light to his left.
I suppose it is. Ian smiles to himself. I can only imagine what my escape from that other Abyssal Isle would have looked like.
But I think its about time... Ian lets the thought hang, and concentrates on returning to the abyss.
*Blarkthornes huffs*
"No, no, no, no, no and no. I would never serve anyone, and I would not sell my soul ever. I forge my own path, I never follow."
Slowly, shapes begin to form in the darkness surrounding Ian. Vague objects, silhouettes and distinct shadows become visible... but Ian misses the outlines of buildings, or of a ground.
You are not strong enough yet, Lomax says. You are not returning to the original layer; you're opening this in-between reality to the inhabitants of the Shadow Abyss. You need some kind of support if this is the way you want to go.
Now, Ian realizes many of the various shapes resemble a variety of creatures he knows - creatures that one would definitely expect in the Abyss! Most of them seem to be staring straight at him.
"That is well," the cute voice of the spell personality answers to Blackthornes. "You may enter, and you may decide whom you bring along. But I should warn you; the room behind that door is a room of peace. Trying to break that peace has consequences, and depending on the offense, the consequence will not be nice for the offender. To open the door, softly touch the symbol of lightning. To let anyone else enter, touch his or her or its hand while you are inside the room. Oh, and... welcome. It feels good to have a new face inside the room."
Ian stops concentrating on leaving. Define support.
Awaiting Lomax's response, Ian travels back to the shards and, out of curiousity, experiments with controlling what he can see through the shards without actually moving them.
I believe in your terms it would be, someone powerful enough to change reality without magic. An extremely experienced signer, or a powerful fiend or other immortal - for a tanar'ri, at least a balor, better something beyond.
Observing a group of shards, Ian can see the strange creatures still making their ritual. The one who looked up to Ian still stares at where Ian has been - but there is nothing visible there anymore. The creature's eye-tentacles are moving quickly and nervously, a movement that almost makes Ian sick as he watches it.
*blackthornes will touch the symbol and open the door. When he gets in the room, he will extend out his arm and speak*
"Naruk, grab my hand. Then Gnoll, Saath, Azure and Sejanus, in that order. And quickly!"
While there might be a being of such power in that Abyssal Isle I spotted, the chances of me convincing even a Balor to do anything are very, very small. So, a new plan is in order.
You said I was letting inhabitants of the Shadow Abyss in here by accident, how would you describe the chance that I can send myself to the Shadow Abyss, and try leaving from there instead?
Ian will now try to change the view that the shards show- such as zooming in or out, or cause a shard to show something in specific, instead what what it was showing before.
As Blackthornes touches the door, it opens in the middle and slides open to both sides with a soft sound. He climbs up into the room above, which is quite different to the ruined city they came from:
The room is five yards high, with beautiful white marble walls, and filled with a variety of exotic plants, shining in colourful beauty. The smell reminds of a tropical forest - if anyone in the group has ever visited one -, and a few beautiful small insects fly through the fresh and regenerative air.
Naruk grabs Blackthornes hand, and clims up to the room. "Wow," he says with a whisper as he takes a look around.
There might be a way to convince such a creature, Lomax replies. I know a secret how any tanar'ri can gain a sudden increase in power without any backfire effect. That is an offer many a fiend would take. On the other hand, it could be less dangerous to slip through the Shadow Abyss. But you already caught lots of attention there. Things could follow you... if they do not already. The choice is yours.
As Ian tries to zoom in on a shard, the shard suddenly moves towards him VERY quickly, stopping only two inches in front of his face. As he tries to get a look on something left of what the shard shows now, the shard itself moves left, changing what it views while it moves.
[OOC: I'm gone on saturday and sunday, back on monday!]
"Oh, much better!" Saath sighs in relief as he enters the room. "Even if this is an illusion, I much prefer it over where we were just now."
"Ian had better return before those 'ri get to the door. Or otherwise after they're long gone, we can't get out of this burg without him."
*Blackthornes will replies to saath*
"From what I can see, the only way out is the way we came in, and I don't think that after the fiends get to the door that we are gonna be able to go back out of it for a while. "
[OOC: I'm gone 'til monday, I'll reply afterwards! I can tell so much already, the room is quite large and the group can't see the entire room at once due to the many plants. So there might be another exit.]
OOC: oh, all right.
Ian leaves the shards, and decides to investigate the other Abyssal Isle.
I'd rather not do something that results in more power for a fiend. Too many possibly drawbacks.
However, why don't I see if we have any other options, before making a choice.
By the way, what is the group doing at this point?
"It is not an illusion," Faathi states as an answer to Saath. "The Faeraan magic keeps everything in here alive and unaffected by outside influences - including me."
The Masked Gnoll says nothing, but looks around with a wide grin on his face. He is probably the only one not noticing a movement at the other side of the room, somewhere behind a couple of small trees. The same moment the door slides to close again, not long before the mariliths would have arrived. The group can already hear their hissing and cursing in the room.
As you like, Lomax says. You are the creating power in this realm, after all. As for the group, they just escaped the mariliths. As far as I can tell, they are out of danger for the moment.
[OOC: Still no sign from dread pirate swan... if he doesn't reply soon, I'll have to take his character out of the game as well. Of course, I'll make something up like I did with Ophelia to easily bring him back if he returns.]
"Hm-hm-hmm."
This is the only reply Faathi gives for a few seconds, before continuing, "So I assume you are visitors from a different world? I assumed such things are possible, and you appeared different enough to not come from Faeraan. So, where are you from exactly?"
The leaves Saath touches seem to be as real as anything else in the room - including Saath himself.
Before Saath has a chance to reply to Faathi, the movement appears again - followed by quick steps. A moment later, a strange figure appears before the group.
The creature is humanoid - somewhat -, but resembles more a knot of fine roots than an actual human-related being. There is no part of its body that is entirely solid, even the torso and head are nothing but a complex network of green and light brown roots. None of the roots is thicker than a human pinky, and fine green hair covers the entire network of roots that make up the creature's body.
A deep, roaring voice appears as the creature's fine hair vibrates all over its body.
"They are coming! The demons, they have conquered the palace! We were right all along, they will kill all of us if they get us!"
"Faeraan? Can't say I've ever heard about Faerans. Who're they?" Saath asks while walking over to some nearby plants and investigating their reality by rubbing on the leaves. He's still a bit suspicious, the movement doesn't help either.
*Blackthornes reacts to the creature*
" what? they're getting in. That's no good."
The creature turns to Blackthornes. "Is the escape tunnel still free? Or are we captured here?" Its voice vibrates so strongly it can be felt as much as heard.
Ian heads toward the other Abyssal Isle, and looks at the surface to see if he can make out what it is like inside.
Investigating the other Abyssal Isle that floats through the dark void, Ian finds there is no gap or rip or any other kind of empty space to look inside. The egg-shaped Isle shows nothing but a mirror of the Abyssal reality Ian has (unwillingly) left.
I could give you ideas, Lomax says, to achieve something faster. But with anything I tell you, I will influence you and the way you influence this reality. It is your choice if you want to hear the ideas or go for your own.
"There's a ton of ghostly marilith on the other side o' that hatch. Sooo, captured." Saath answers the rooty creature. "Besides, the last time we checked, the other end of the tunnel ain't a place you wanna be, snakes, vrocks, lightning. Nasty business. But perhaps we could help in some way?"
Ian listens silently to Lomax for a moment, and then concentratetes on this place being a room that he can walk out of. With that image in mind, he attempts to Shadow Jaunt.
OOC: here hoping I don't break something...
*Blackthornes looks at the creature.*
"Yes, as my friend said, if you're talking about the tunnel on the other side of that door, then, it has been captured. Who, may I ask, are you?"
For a long moment, nothing happens. Then, a subtle outline appears below Ian. Everything else happens extremely fast: The vague outline turns into a square, and the door Ian created turns out to be a trapdoor. Before he falls down, he can see a strange light emitting from the other Abyssal Isle, but he has no chance to take a closer look - for only a moment later, he finds himself in the Shadow Abyss. And he has the feeling of being watched... by more than one pair of eyes.
The creature's fine hairs vibrate heavily for a moment, creating a deep sound so intense it gives everyone around a slight headache.
Fortunately, it seems to calm down after a bit. "I am Thuu, Guard of Divine Nature. What you describe," he turns to Saath, "is worse than what I feared. It is only minutes ago I left the palace..."
Once more, his fine hair begins to vibrate, even stronger than before.
Saath frowns at his headache, caused by the creature. "Must've started right after you left then, Thuu. So where's this palace? All these eyes saw up there were ruins and a puppy... Nothin' fancy to say the least."
"That is impossible," Thuu says in his deep voice. "I just fled from the palace. True, countless demons attacked it... but they could not turn everything into ruins so fast... or could they?"
Once more, his hair vibrates and creates the unnerving sound.
Suddenly, he turns around. "They are at the door. Do you hear them?"
*Blackthornes puts his hand to his chin and speaks to thuu and Saath*
"Perhaps this place can be accessed from different places at the same time. I don't know how this would work, but maybe by some magics or something. I have a feeling that those fiends can't pass the doors though, for, the door gaurdian asked if I was fiendish upon enterance, giving me the idea that fiends are not allowed to enter this place."
*Blackthornes turns to Naruk*
"If you have any idea, please, speak your mind. You know more of magics than I do."
"Those ruins were ruins hours ago... So you're thinkin' we're not anywhere near the ruins anymore, 'Thornes?" Saath listens for the demons at the door Thuu mentioned and looks the way Thuu is while shaping his mindblade.
"Anyway, let's first hold off the 'ri. Faathi? I'm sure ya won't mind us fighting fiends in here, right?"
Faathi answers in her ever-friendly way, "Fighting is not allowed in here. If any fiend succeeds in entering this room, I can only hope for the fiend it will not start a fight."
Naruk looks at Thuu, rubbing his chin. "By now, there's too many possibilities to really give a good guess what's going on here. I wish I could take a look at those fiends trying to enter from the other side."
He nods to where Thuu came from.
Anyone trying to listen to the fiends Thuu was speaking of can't hear anything - no sound comes in from the outside.
The Masked Gnoll walks up to Thuu, his hands on his flindbars.
"What sorta fiends were after you? There were a bunch of ghost fiends behind us. I coulda taken them, but they cheat."
OOC: Im here, waiting for replies to our situatution.
