Game: Great minds think alike (Part II)

Sejanus' massive figure suddenly straightens. "I feel... strange," he says. "It feels like a magical pull..."

Before he can finish the sentence, everything goes white. A lightning strike from above hits the large Maug, and everyone around feels the crackling electrical energy. The bright explosion is so intense that everyone is thrown on the ground, and even as you get up again, the ability to see anything but white only returns slowly.

"Fie! If we go back now, we'll be cowering in that safe room 'till we starve." Azure will, however, take a few steps away from the Maug and watch what may happen. He is not so clueless as to think that was an ordinary bolt of lightning.

" I agree with Azure. We can't keep running back to that hole everytime there's a lick of danger. If we did that, Xanarox would be long gone by the time we got to the tower."

"Well said, my friend," Azure nods grimly to Blackthornes, "The land and sky themselves are full of malice in this place. We were lucky indeed to have found a safe haven here, but I do not trust in safety. 'Tis a fool's hope. Escape may be a fools hope too, but mine druthers are a death in striving over a meek existance in a hidey-hole."

With that, Azure starts forward into the mist.

MG looks at Ian, then forward to Azure and Blackthorns, then back to Ian.

"So we're not running away like scardie-gnolls? Well in that case lets keep moving like the brave hero I..err...we are."

Quote:
"Umm... shouldn't we at least try to find out what happened with our Maug companion?"

"Why would we do that Naruk? I mean, If we investigate what happen to that poor Maug, chances are good it might happen to me too. Now I'm a pretty beefy Gnoll, but beefy can't stop lighting!"

"That was no normal lightning, MG," Naruk says. "Sejanus said something about feeling a pull... and I remember a few things from my times as a Guvner mage. I believe this was some kind of summoning spell, and Sejanus was the... creature... that was summoned. He is a planeborn, after all."

He takes a look around. "If that's okay for all of you, I'd take a quick look at where the lightning struck the Maug. If my theory is correct, and if that spell was cast by Xanarox - which is not necessarily true, but still a possibility -, it might happen our former companion will soon be our enemy, forced by magic. And if Xanarox summoned him, he might also be able to ask him about everything Sejanus has seen and heard. Which means our entire plan and all we know about him."

Once again, Naruk nods. "Shuba... Shabba... don't remember the exact name, but it's Sh-someone's lightning of exchange summoning. Gets you one powerful summoned creature at your side, while bringing one of your enemies to the place where the summoned creature comes from. You, my friend, have just been exchanged with our newest companion. It's a powerful spell, so that's why I assumed you had a powerful enemy. Lich doesn't surprise me, really."

He frowns. "Sejanus is a planeborn from Acheron... so if I recall the effects of the spell correctly - I was never able to cast it myself -, the Maug will end up in Acheron when the spell ends. That probably means he's lost to us. On the other hand," his eyes light up, "if it was some Baatorian lich that summoned him, that means Sejanus isn't under control of Xanarox, which is good news."

"Listen to me when I say this, friend. We're actually about to have a smashing good time fighting a time traveler. Ian raises an eyebrow. "What are you expecting, membership benefits? We arn't a bloody guild. If we decide to take you with us, and that is an if, we're taking a considerable risk by placing any amount of trust in someone we've known less than a few minutes."
"Now, I'm open to the idea of taking you on as an addition. But, whatever skills you may have aside, why should we? Or, to put it another way, why should we trust you?."

Azure just shrugs, "In a place as chaotic as this, exchanging one companion for another does not seem so preposterous. I say don't trust him, but then again I don't fully trust any of you. I just want to get out of this demon-infested ruin. The true insidiousness of this place is that it ... traps beings. We have to keep trying to get out, or it will sap all hope of escape from us. This fool asks for reward, when escape is the only reward of worth here."

The dark elf glances as the newcomer, "To me he amounts to little more or less than an alternate target until he shows his worth. Pity he's not the target the Maug was." he flashes a sardonic grin.

Large round eyes look the elf up and down and his massive jaw turns into a massive smile as he relizes the elf might be afraid of him...

Why would he be afraid of me? The only logical expilanation would be....no...no way is he a fiend....but what if he is?

"I say give him a chance, but play it cautious. If he turns out to be trustworthy than HURRAY!But if he's a just a fiend in elf clothing then I swear that I WILL break him. I'll crush his bones and tear his insides outside and poke out his eyes and....and....opps, I'm ranting, sorry."

Naruk puts a hand on MG's back (mostly, because he can't easily reach the shoulder). "Azure has been in a place where fiends rule, and where mortals are little more than fodder and playthings. I'm not surprised he needs a bit longer to allow himself to trust anyone."

Directed at Ian, "I didn't want to say it right in his face, but it's entirely possible he was lying, and he was sent here by Xanarox. I'm pretty sure about that spell, but I'm also pretty sure Xanarox or one of the liches would be able to cast it, too. The fact that he says a lich sent him here might be a way to protect him from truth detection spells. Xanarox is accompanied by liches, after all."

He looks at Encharma, and gives him a smile. "But, it's better to keep a possible enemy at your side rather than hidden behind your back. I vote for taking him with us, at least until we get through the time portal."

Ian looks around the group. "I'm glad to hear that you all have similar concerns, and I have an idea."

"One of two things must be true. A: he was sent by Xanarox, or B: he wasn't."
"There is a simple, and useful, way to discover which is true. We don't tell him about the traps. If he was sent by Xanarox, he will know that the Tower is trapped, and won't want to be the one in front or the first to open anything. So, we send him in first and see how he reacts."
"If he wasn't sent by Xanarox, he won't know any better, and whatever trap he sets off will be one less that can hit us. If he sets it off and survives, then we can probably say he was not sent by Xanarox. If he doesn't survive... either way, problem solves itself."

"Oh, and even if he is telling the truth and wasn't sent by Xanarox, I must say that we shouldn't take him with us through the time portal. Most of us are supposed to go through to fulfill our mission. Azure is coming because I promised to get him out of the abyss, and that means he has to come with us. But this new guy... there is alot of trouble someone can cause 500 years in the past. Even unintentionally. I think its best if we minimize that risk."

Naruk shakes his head as Ian explains his plan. "First, I wouldn't want to go in first into any tower in the Abyss. And I'd become wary of any group trying to make me go in first, because I'd think they just wanna use me as cannon fodder. Which, if I understand you right, is not entirely wrong if we follow your plan."

"Second," he continues, "if he truly was sent by Xanarox, he might know of ways to pass the traps without activating them. I've seen it all in my past journeys..."

"Im more with Naruk on this one. How do we know he isn't with the liches? It's very possible, considering The conditions of the spell, and it's power. But, then again, leaving him here to stick a knife in our backs later isn't a good plan. I think we should take him along, but be weary. I'll leave the final word with our leader*Stressed sarcastically*."
*Blackthornes gives a little chuckle, then leaves the huddle to go over to the elf.*
"So, fighting liches in baator heh? How did you get yourself in that predicament?"

Ian watches Blackthornes leave with a slightly bemused look. "What was that about?"
He shakes his head. "Anyway, I'm still looking for alternatives, people. We need a plan a bit better than to take him with us and play it by ear. And we need to know one way or the other where he stands before we face Xanarox or the liches. The last thing we need is someone attacking us from our own ranks."
Ian pauses, and gestures for the group to speak.

turns to blackthornes

"well my human friend was perusing a text on how to become a half celestial, when he realized that he would need someone of much more power to cast the spell, after that we went in search of a high level sorceror or wizard which led us to a man by the name of Aravol, aravol agreed to turn my friend in to a half celestial if we agreed to solve a problem for him."

"that problem was that an extremely old lich had kidnapped his brother, personnally i am not all about letting an innocent be captured and quite possibly killed by a lich, then my friend and i set out after approximately a year or so we learned of where the lich was currently residing, and that was in baator, so we set out and during the battle the lich spellslinger cast a spell on me and next thing i know i am in the abyss with no forseeable way out. But like you may have over heard me over saying i would love to join your adventuring party because Danger is my first name"

"So there how did you come to join this group of adventurers?"

'We traded one maug with unknown intentions for an elf with unknown intentions, though, admittedly, with a peerier entrance. If this were any other time or place I'd say we send him on his merry way, but we can use a companion since we just lost one..." Saath sighs.

"Personally I'd prefer him not coming along, but I have no good reasons for it other than 'I don't trust him'. If he comes along I propose he stays in the middle of the group; he'll stay in sight and won't be able to run away easily."

"Sounds a bit too contrived. As for using the fool as a trap-springer, the idea has merits, to be sure, but I have to stop short of being quite that callous. Distant kin he may be, but my kin nonetheless, should he prove to be what he claims. Perhaps the middle would be best, as Saath said. Alternately, I will take the chance of keeping him close to me on point. If trully of elvin blood, no doubt he will be stealthy and skillful at the test. If he is found lacking I will take it as a sign that he is not Alfar at all, or at least that he's a hinderance to us, and I will introduce him to my ravens." "I've got it. We'll tell him that Xanarox can use magic to track any creature he has seen. He encountered us previously, and can sense us where ever we go. We say that we need him to scout the tower ahead of us, so we know what we are getting into without him knowing."
"We'll tell him this a bit away from the tower, and send him off. Azure and I will trail him, and see what he does. As he nears the tower, I will disguise myself as Xanarox, approach him, and see how he reacts."
