Game: Great minds think alike (Part II)

*Blackthornes sees through Saath's bluff, and dicides to follow them back in. After everyone is in the room, he will start talking to the group*
"Well, in light of current situations, maybe we should talk more of Lomax first. Anything anyone remembers in particular about him? I don't know if that's who contacted me or not, but, I know that the voice was very feline, and, seemed to know almost everything that I wanted to hear. Anybody else give some hints as to what they've heard?"
*at the end of his statement, he passes a peering look at Saath, then looks over the rest of the group with lighter eyes*
OOC: Blackthornes will use a bit of Diplomacy to help Saath spill his guts.

17 Bonus for Diplomacy to do

Naruk nods. "I have this feline voice in my mind since... almost two Sigil years now. I know nothing for sure, but if I can trust him, and up to now I'm still not sure about that, he comes from within me, something like a deep-buried, sentient part of my being. He told me he has no name of his own, so I chose a name for him - Goa'un. Like Ian's Lomax, he helped me many times already, and he seems heavily interested in guiding me to... get my life straight again. But he's said himself he has goals of his own, and he's not willing to spill any of these darks. Besides that, he knows many things that... are not easy to know. All this coming together, I'm very doubtful about fully trusting him."

Naruk blinks twice, then takes a look around. "Powers. Seems like I really had the need to talk about this with someone."

*Blackthornes will sit and listen intently to their back and forth conversation. He interjects after Naruk say "Lots of."*
"That's strange, in my case, he just told me some half guesses and would be future events. He started talking to me after we took down that nasty Illithid in Akin's if I remember correctly."

Ian completely ignores the fact that Blackthornes just spoke.
"Well then, I would think that if he was a part of your mind or being, he would still be limited to your scope of knowledge. Therefore, he's either not a part of you, or is not restricted to only being a part of you."

"As I recall, he also mentioned being a part of me as well, when we first started having conversations earlier today. Curious."

I don't suppose you want to join in on this conversation, do you? If you don't want me to repeat anything specific, just say so.

Speak freely. I am not hiding, neither from you nor from your friends. Lomax replies to Ian.

Leave me some time, the cat-like voice says in Blackthornes' mind. I am cautious with what I say, for I do not want to influence you and your free decisions.

Meanwhile, the cat-like voice that just appeared in Saath's mind speaks again. Hello, Saath.

Get out. The others don't seem concerned about what I'm guessin' is you, but I don't want anyone but me peering into my brain-box.

"Fine, I'll join the club." Saath confesses. "This cat-voice mentioned it was 'awake' just now. You lot don't seem to mind something you know nothing about listenin' in on your every thought, but I do. How d'you get it out?"

Look into your mind. How many chains of thought are going on at the same time, Saath? There are those on the surface, the ones forming the words you speak. There are chains of thought about your fear of me, chains of thought about the danger of the mariliths behind that door, and chains of thought about Xanarox. All that takes place at the same time, and even if your focus is set on one of those chains of thought, you consider all of them part of your mind. And so am I. Opposite to most of your chains of thought, I am sentient, but still I am a part of you. I can be silent, observing, speaking only with myself, if you prefer that. But I cannot leave you.

Naruk frowns, then says, "There were times when Goa'un was silent, sometimes for months, sometimes only days. But I believe he was always there. I think it was mostly me who could not hear him during the 'silent periods'. But that's just a guess."

He stares at the wall in front of him for a moment, then adds, "Goa'un just said that this is right for the months-long periods, but that during some of the other periods, he had reasons for being silent."

Ian listens to Saath speak. "Well, you just met him. At first, I was a bit worried by it too. But give him long enough to save your life, you'll come around. Besides, I doubt there's much you can do to make him leave besides asking politely."

Ian turns back to Naruk. "Now, when it comes right down to it, everything else about Lomax is pretty secondary compared to this. In the time that you have known Lo..." Ian pauses. "...Goa'un, has he ever intentionally steered you wrong?"

"No... to be honest, he even tried to keep me from making serious mistakes a couple of times. I also always had the impression he was trying to keep a balance between helping and guiding me, and not influencing me too much. Seems like he cares a lot about free will."

Naruk pauses a moment, then takes a look around in the group. "Does this fit your experiences with him? And... those who haven't said anything yet, have you made any similar experiences?"

Sejanus' large head shakes a single time, accompanied by a simple "No."

"Hey Lomax, why isn't I never heard you whenI was on Toril? If what Naruk says is true, then, you could have saved my tail in a load of situations. Why haven't you spoken until now? If you had saved me back in Athkutla, I would never have ventured into the damned ring and met up with this fool Shadowknife. As wise as he may be, I bitterly detest almost everything about him."

I am not Lomax - unless that is how you want to call me, Blackthornes. And, I have not spoken before simply because I was not awake. I became aware at A'kin's shop.
But, now that you speak of it, Shadowknife is closer to you than you believe. That is the reason why you two dislike each other that much: You see in him how you do not want to be, and vice versa. But, the whole thing goes deeper than you two believe.

Ian sits in thought for a moment. "Naruk. When goa'un first began speaking to you, was there anything especially odd or unique occurring during your life? exposure to a certain artifact, exploring some new demiplane, or some sort of other precipitating event?"

But, what do you mean about us having deeper meaning? Ian is a bit of a foolish rogue to say the least. He seems to rely to much on magic and that sort. I haven't seen much in the department of raw talent by his part. Though, Im certainly no perfect thief. Perhaps he'll come in handy somewhere soon. Call me Thorn, then, the voice in Blackthornes' mind says. Talking of you and Ian... look at how you two influence each other. It reminds me a bit of a Baatezu meeting a Tanar'ri. You can work together for a limited time, but both of you despise the other. The interesting question is, why.

Meanwhile, Saath hears the voice in his mind answering his question.
Your friends. I felt their inner presence. Your connection to your awoken friends made you... me... wake.

Do you not want to join the conversation?

"Namely, Xanarox. Now, I have the beginnings of a plan in mind... but I would like to hear what you all think our course of action should be. Ian nods. "I'm hearing more or less what I expected to hear. And I think I have a plan that will to play to all our strengths. It goes something like this."

"Tomorrow morning, Blackthornes, Azure and I will depart on a mission of stealth to confirm the location of the tower. No one else. Blackthornes needs to examine the tower from afar for the latter part of my plan to go smoothly, I need to know where the tower is, and Azure is the closest thing we have to a guide. It is important that we are not detected during this part of the plan."

"Having completed this task, we will return here, and regroup. Then, I will leave. You all will more or less surround the tower, and wait."
"I will be using my ring to fly out of the mist, and into the normal area of the abyss. If all goes well, I will pick a fight with some of the vrocks we saw before, and lead them on a chase that ends at the tower. Once we are close enough that they have seen Xanarox, I'll escape into the mist."

"Then, we observe Xanarox fighting the Vrocks. Not only do we get to see him in action, to better plan how to fight him, but any spell that they use on the vrocks is one less for them to use on us. While they are fighting, I will use this..." Ian pulls out a wand. "... To enhance your defenses. It only works for a short time, but it can give you a considerable edge."

"After Xanarox dispatches, or drives away, the Vrocks... we strike."

Ian points at Blackthornes. "You won't be fighting. You have more important duties. I'll give you the key before I leave, and at the first oppertunity, you enter the tower and attempt to locate the portal. Clear away any traps Xanarox might have set in our way, and prepare the portal to take us to the past. I want us able to leave the moment we are there. Do not engage in the battle at all costs."

"Saath, Naruk and Azure will be engaged in hit and run tactics, using the mist as cover. Exactly how they handle it will be up to them."

Ian looks at the Masked Gnoll. "We need the Masked Gnoll to open and close the door to this sanctuary is all goes to hell. So he will hang back for the first 10-15 seconds of combat. If Xanarox can defeat us easily, it will become obvious within that span of time. After that, I will telekineticaly throw him into the middle of battle. The Masked Gnolls greatest weakness is his lack of a ranged weapon. This will give him an element of surprise, and allow him to get in close, fast."

"Sejanus, you will be our wall. engage as you see fit, but you're primary objective will be to stay between them and the tower. Buy Blackthornes as much time as possible."

"I will be making hit and run attacks, combined with using my ring to provide emergency evacuation if any of you are seriously wounded."

"Any question, suggestions, or complaints?" Ian asks cheerfully.

"Then we have him in a confined area, and can use hit and run attacks more effectively. If he's guarding the time gate, than we can use his reluctance to leave the area to our advantage."

"If he pursues us, than we can draw him out into the open, and proceed as planned."

Ian thinks for a moment. "When we scout the area tomorrow morning, we will proceed as planned if we see them guarding from the outside. After all, even if its only the liches outside, if we can take one out, thats one less threat."

"If we have it on good authority that they are in the tower, we'll return, and the more speed and stealth inclined of us will head in and incur a brief encounter, followed by a full retreat. If they follow, the Masked Gnoll and Sejanus can ambush them at the door. If they don't... we'll adapt. No plan survives contact with the enemy."

"I don't suppose anyone here has anything quick and widespread that we can use against them as a hit and run method?"

"Sounds good to me for the most part." Saath chimes in. "Our biggest disadvantage is that we have no idea what Xanarox can do. Hopefully there will be Vrocks above the mist, and if there are and Ian can lure them to Xanarox before losing them and if the Vrocks attack him we might get to know more. Lots'a uncertainties there, but I can't think of a better idea."

"As for the hit 'n run; MG and Sejanus will probably do more hittin' than runnin'. With these boots I'll be quick and able to pop in and out of their reach unharmed. Close combat would be best against the spellslingers, if they are spellslingers, depriving them of effectively usin' area spells or flyin' off."
"Also, there are two tricks I can alter my mind blade with to give 'em a hard time. I could change it to effectively sunder any items they hold, or I could make it so every hit has a chance of dispelling any active spells on 'em. Both are useful, but I'm leanin' toward the second. Any suggestions?"

"I also have some questions. Are we supposed to take down Xanarox and his guards? 'Cuz I doubt we'll be able to do it. And, once 'Thornes opens the gate and we're still fighting, how are we supposed to get to it? Do we get a signal and hope we outrun 'Rox?"

I can do something that, for you, will seem like that.

Naruk shakes his head. "I'm not entirely happy with the plan yet. What if Xanarox is able to simply unmake those of us who try the hit-and-run strategy? If all he needs to know is that someone is there, and he can unmake that someone? We should consider that possible."

"And that, Naruk, is why I had hoped to have him engage the Vrocks first. To see what limits, if any, his power had. However, while time travel itself is a very powerful ability, I would imagine that the same basic rules of magic would apply. In other words, he needs to be able to see us to target us. If he could erase us without knowing our exact location, I think we would already be gone."
"And yes, the hit and run tactic will be risky. But the same concerns you expressed before, if true, would mean that a direct attack would result in our instant failure, right?"

Ian pauses for a moment, then turns to Saath. "I would recommend the second as well, unless we see one of them using a powerful item, such as a staff, that we need out of the way."

Ian then turns to address the group again. "When it comes right down to it we really, really need to get him outside the tower. From what I overheard, the mist makes Xanarox's time travel abilities unreliable. We can also use it as cover. If he's outside the tower, we can surround him, and he can't target us all at once."

"If we can't get him outside the tower, its still in our best interests to see him in combat before fighting him ourselves. Does anyone here have any summoning ability?"

"And as for you, Azure. I understand your position completely. This isn't your fight. After you lead us to the tower tomorrow morning, you are free to do as you wish. But know that our overall plan requires us to reach that gate, and use it. If you don't come with us, we can't get you off this plane."

In situations like this, information is vital, and if we are staying here to rest, we must make sure that everyone is as informed as possible before we move out."

Naruk listens to Ian, nodding all the time. "I understand your position. I want to explain mine. I've seen hundreds of experienced planewalkers who used risky plans to finish some task that seemed impossible to finish. They've succeeded many times, true. But about seventeen of a hundred failed, and their fate was always death or something worse."

He pauses for a moment. "I always thought seventeen percent were a pretty high number when it comes to my personal survival. And this group has little experience on working together, along with emotional problems between certain persons, and no idea how strong Xanarox and his fellows truly are. I think we should focus more on that part where we don't fight Xanarox ourselves, along with getting him out into the mist, if he's not there already."

"I believe we should focus on those of our abilities that Xanarox probably doesn't expect. This Lomax-Goa'un-whatever-voice-in-our-minds could be a key to success. Of course, Sejanus and Azure don't have it, so we have to keep that in mind for our plans."

He takes a deep breath, then continues, "What I can offer is my last bottle of Arbutrax wine, a psycho-active drug that gives light visions, which might shed some light on what expects us. The bottle contains enough for two people. I believe I shouldn't use it, instead focussing on learning spells. Besides that, I still have a few Guvner tricks left to influence reality. First, I can make any spell spread over an area of half a mile. Any spell, but only one single time. Second, I can create a magic-free area of about nine feet radius. The sphere will exist for only a second or two, but it could come in handy in some situations. I don't know how often I'll be able to use this, but no more than three times for sure. And third, I can... I can bring a single person back to life, once. But the person has to be pulverized or disintegrated, nothing of the physical body may remain."

I think your plan is good enough to fight the liches that accompany Xanarox. But the assassin himself... he seemed extraordinarily powerful.
