ooc: ok.

Ii'Jyka'Vaar steadies her hands and focuses on the movements that will emerge from the door opening, and she chooses her target with meticulous care, leaving the other one for Du'minh and Gy'nath, she is so focussed, that when the target emerges, she responds so ferocious, that it even startles herself, the sword just seems to flow through the target when she hacks at him...

Ya'shenn reaches into a satchel for one of the nasty "thrall suppression" devices the two Tamers had provided. Not the most violently inclined of githyanki, the psion has to remind herself that the graith here are either mind-slaves, or (given that the ghaik had offered them money) actually acting of their own free will. Of course, anyone who would willingly serve the Enemy is even more debased than a thrall.

She eyes the collared illithid and its guards, but decides that she'd be lucky to manage such an upward throw -- not to mention that Gy-Nath and other githwarriors are headed that way. Instead, she takes aim and hurls the inscribed, faceted crystal at a cluster of three of the graith advancing menacingly toward Ar'dru. If her throw lands where she wishes it to, she sends:

When the timing is right, Du’minh darts forward from his position and makes a solid upwards swing at the khaasta’s jaw. He casts a quick glance back at where they emerged to locate Foreman and other nearby threats.

Packing House - The

Packing House - The Offices

The trio of githyank warriors intercept the two members of the Meatpackers' Union, with deadly results. First, Gy-Nath emerges and gives the Kaasta a wound to the thigh. This does not kill the muscular reptile, but it gets his attention long enough for Du'minh to crush the planar lizardman's skull from behind with a powerful overhand swing. The halforc rounds the corner next, but before he can react to the gruesome scene, he is beheaded by Ii. Gy smiles in approval and turns to continue up the next flight of stairs when the gith hear a VERY loud noise from out on the killing floor, and are forced to duck and cover as broken glass fills the hallway.

Packing House - The Killing Floor

Ignoring the onrushing workers for now, Ar'dru quickly removes his pack and light a thunderblast grenade. He lobs it in a high arc towards the upper catwalk. It goes off just after the high point of its trajectory.

The first thunderblast back at the Hive Brothel was loud, loud enough to send echoes accross Sigil. The one in here has to compete with the bellows of still-frightened cattle, and the general din of a work. There is really no contest, however. There is a brilliant white flash and a bang that almost ruptures Ar'dru's eardrums. Most of the windows in the office 'shed' shatter. The herd of cattle panics anew, this time stampeding out of the Packing House to the best of their ability, crushing at least two startled workers in the process. The concussion knocks Foreman and his bodyguard flat, and one of them topples over the rail and falls to his death. Where the thunderblast went off, the catwalk's metal railing is broken and twisted. There is a rupture in the catwalk itself as well, not large, but considering the sturdy iron it was made of, showing the power of the alchemical grenade.

[Ar'dru is stunned for a round, but so is just about everyone else, so it's a wash.]

When she herself recovers, Ya'shenn sees fear in the faces of the workers. There are a trio that instinctually huddled closer together not far from her position. Once they take a moment to shake the ringing out of their heads they move quickly to try and stop Ar'dru from delving into his pack again. They, as well as several others, rush him.

[We'll say 4 in total will reach Ar'dru this round, 4 more next round, and a final 4 on round 3. The first 4 all try to grapple him and get his pack away from him. However there is a matter of an exploding psionic crystal that slides in from the doorway of the office shed ...

Um, is Ya'shenn aiming for the graith that are about to jump on Ar'dru (in which case he may be in the blast) or does she want to make it into more of a landmine-type trap for the ones a few steps behind? Oh, and roll a to-hit just in case it, say, takes a bad bounce.

One more thing, since Wei is in the woods (so to speak) Daraz will load his crossbow and cover Ar'dru that way, once he gets his hands off his ears.]

Although the ringing

Although the ringing sensation still fills his head after the blast, Du’minh shakes off what he can and pushes himself forward through the haze of dust and broken glass. He proceeds along the path followed by the Meatpacker Union members to enter the killing floor level where Foreman is at.

Seeing how the catwalk section near the mind flayer already is weakened by the powerful blast, Du’minh lunges forward with his mace raised high to finish the job. He smashes the adamantine head with all his might down on the appropriate support, seeking to demolish enough to give way under the illithid.

If at all possible, the Rish will try to catch himself from following Foreman into a fall, though that is strictly a secondary concern. If the gith more likely will follow into the drop, he’ll try landing on top of the illithid to cushion his fall and deal more punishment to it through his spiked heavy armor.

OOC

A risky feat of daring do, perhaps, but Du’minh don’t do things the easy way. Eye-wink

Max Power Attack -8/+16, adamantine ignores hardness less than 20. I assumed the enhancement on the mace remains +3 since its not strictly a construct as in a creature.

The Killing Floor Ears

The Killing Floor

Ears still ringing, Ar'dru retrieves his greatsword from the floor just as the first workers reach him. In these close quarters he grabs it by the handle with one hand and by the blade with the other. The workers soon regret their actions, as he shatters the cheekbone of the the first with the hilt, and cuts deeply into the torso of a second. Then they are on him, trying to weight him down with numbers. [roll vs grapple attempts. Evil DM in full effect says Ar'dru must beat the largest #, i.e. 25, which still won't be that hard, probably.]

Ya'shenn slides the exploding crystal across the floor, but though it is slick it also has several metal grates for the blood and offal to sluice through. The crystal takes a bad bounce as it hits one of these and tings loudly. Though it is likely none of the workers hear this, as their ears still ring from the thunderblast moments before, the crystal comes to rest at the feet of a large gnoll, who sees it and pauses. He even picks it up and looks around in the direction it came from, quickly spotting Ya'shenn. The gnoll draws out a large butcher knife still slick with cow blood and gives it a lick as he moves toward Ya'shenn (though he does not drop the crystal).

The Offices

Recovering swiftly and brushing broken glass off themselves, Gy, Du, and Ii climb the next set of stairs up to the second level of catwalks. They arrive just as Foreman is climbing painfully to its feet. Its bodyguard are either knocked out or killed by the concussion of the thunderblast genade. It sees the trio of githyanki in the doorway of the office 'building', and it eyes widen in fear. Not a race known for bravery, the illithid does the predictable: it tries to scurry away, first on all fours then grabbing a railing to get to its feet. The heavy wood and metal collar locked around the illithid's neck hampers it, however. Du'minh rushes forward and uses his newly-acquired magical mace to attack a support. Already weakened, it gives way, and a section of the catwalk drops a few feet before the other supports take up the slack. The point where the thundeblast ruptured the railing and deck gives way even more, pitching the now-sloping section sideways. Gy-Nath acts quickly once he sees what Du'minh is about to do. He yells to Ii to "Get down." and dives on top of her. Still close to the doorway, the pair are able to hold on during the ride.

[Du'minh has to pass a DC20 reflex save to do the same, or he'll fall. If he fails, he'll get a second chance, same DC, to land on the lower catwalk. Landing on the lower catwalk = d6 damage. Not landing on the lower catwalk = 3d6 damage]

Foreman pitches off the catwalk and falls all the way to the killing floor, landing about halfway between Ar'dru and Ya'shenn with a thud.

Under the circumstances, the psion refrains from issuing the psionic command to activate the crystal.

Ya'shenn is strongly tempted to reach into the graith's (probably not particularly functional) mind and order him into a cluster of barbarians. She decides against it, however, as Ar'dru or some of the others might be harmed in the process. Not to mention that if her ears are still ringing from the thunderblast, the barbarian's probably are too. She draws another item the Tamers had 'donated,' the force dorje, and is about to use it when --

The psion's eyes widen when the catwalk collapses -- and then an illithid decides to pay Ar'dru and herself a visit. Quickly realizing that she's not the only being present that can read Qualith, she moves further into the shed, waiting for the gnoll to come to her before treating him to the dorje's telekinetic power.

['Force' dorje on the gnoll. The idea here is to get the gnoll, and thus the crystal, out of Foreman's line of sight, before activating the dorje. This could perhaps be done as a readied action.]

With his own momentum

With his own momentum carrying him forward and the floor tilting violently, Du’minh didn’t hold much hope that he would get out of his stunt unscathed. The Rish futilely grabs after a railing to hold onto, but though his efforts are in vain he rolls with the fall and comes down on solid ground with less pain than he had feared.

Ugh. Consider not getting concussions from alchemical bombs and height drops before you take on a mind-ripper...

Du’minh stumbles to his feet once more, replaces the mace with his reliable flail and drags it groggily towards the mind flayer. He had never been one to stay down. Or leave loose ends.

Gy-Nath glowers at Ii'jyka'vaar, his right eye twitching slightly for the space of a few tense heatbeats. He then gives a slight bow of his head, though not taking his eyes of of her, and says quickly in battle-speech, "Insult unindended. Knight defends self."

{*Note on Githyanki etiquitte: The full sentence, if not using battle-speech, would probably be "The insult was unintended, a Knight can surely defend herself." Battle-speech shortens the phrase considerably. The implications of Gy-Nath's reply are several. By using battle-speach rather than just saying the whole thing, he is subtly reminding Ii (and himself) that they are still in the midst of battle, where pride can wait, and that he still considers himself tacticly her superior officer, as per their deal. A deal, however, that Ii as the victor of their duel dictated to him, not the other way around. In fact, in a situation where he had indeed been her superior officer, he'd probably not offer an apology at all, just give her an order to remind her of the chain of command.}

Ya'shenn steps backward into the shed, hoping that the illithid cannot recognize the dorje by her doing so. Unfortunately, she stumbles over a coil of rope on the floor at exactly the wrong time and misses the gnoll completely. Instead, the line of force eventually connects with a hanging carcass well behind her intended target, making it swing wildly on its chain (which is completely ineffective at influencing the outcome of the battle either way).

The psion is becoming increasingly frustrated (and embarrassed) by her lack of success with the illithid-wrought weaponry.  Ya'shenn thinks also of her crossbow, which had failed the moment she'd attempted to use it against a ghaik.  She raises the dorje again, then blinks several times as Ii'Jyka'Vaar makes her dramatic appearance.  Then she raises her eyebrows.

"Thank you, sister," she says, genuinely surprised.  Evidently the knight has just gone up several notches in Ya'shenn's estimation.

[I can post Ya'shenn's actions for the round, but since her initiative is so low, it would be helpful to know what Foreman is doing.]

OOC

I’ll just post ahead to keep things moving, so just ignore Du’minh’s actions if they’re invalidated by someone before that (like a mind blast from Foreman).

IC

Du’minh vaguely notes developments around him while stepping up to Foreman: Ya’shenn, Ar’dru and Ii’Jyka’Vaar are all nearby, none of them appearing to be in immediate mortal danger – that’s good enough for him to focus on the illithid for now.

He pounds away with the Arbiter at the fallen mind flayer, giving it no quarter or time to recover from the fall. Du’minh circles slightly around it while hammering away, so that his siblings won’t be caught in a potential retaliatory mind blast against him.

Ya'shenn is briefly tempted to administer a beating to the illithid herself.  One does not, after all, often encounter a mind flayer in such a weakened condition.  A golden opportunity!  Du'minh appears to have that well in hand, however, and the half-dragon needs her help.  Picking a graith that looks more physically powerful than the others, or perhaps one who looks like a leader, Ya'shenn activates the dorje again.

With a surge of strength,

With a surge of strength, Ar'dru throws off the two workers, one of them landing on his arse. The other workers who had been moving toward him now come to a stop. Attacking a single half-dragon, restrained by their fellows was one thing, but now they face three armored githyanki warriors, one of whom is busy turning their boss into a pile of purple paste. One of them even speaks aloud the phrase "Oh hell no!". Then Ya'shenn uses the dorje, and the worker closest to Ar'dru goes flying. He goes about ten feet, and though he gets up again, he is now more interested in cradling a sprained wrist than in attacking the duthka'gith again, and scurries away. That's the last straw. The workers' morale breaks, and they run from the githyanki, uttering phases like "I'm paid to kill livestock, not get killed", "I'm going to call a cop." and "I quit."

[Ar'dru can have an AoO on the graith that dared lay a hand on him if he wants.  Ii'jyka'vaar also has an action (and another round of healing) now, and the opportunity to make these fools REALLY scared of githyanki.]

Seeing the workers break

Seeing the workers break and back off eases the pressure, but Du’minh takes no chances in checking for life signs on the ilithid – who knows what else lurks in this place. He composes himself with a foot on Foreman’s chest and makes one final and steady blow dead-center on its forehead.

Assuming the mind flayer looks indisputably dead after this, he turns to Ar’du with a tired smile while catching his breath.

“I see you have kept busy, brother... hope you don’t mind us dropping by... Are there any more of them around?”

Ar'dru casually swings his

Ar'dru casually swings his blade across the fleeing workers spines, more on the principle that they had willingly followed an Illithid than anything else. That done he turns to Du'minh.

"It is always a pleasure to see family brother." Replies Ar'dru with a smile. "There were another two of the creatures in this complx although both seemed intent on fleeing in the confusion. The one which was in the offices will still be burdened by the same type of collar that you see on these others and is known as "Bliss", The other is known as "Pig-killer" and fled during a stampede. I assume it headed down to the sewers below. Pig-killer will be freed from its collar but may be partially or fully blinded from an acid flask that I threw. How did events unfold at the brothel?"

Ar'dru busies himself with removing meathooks head as he talks. Searching through the Illithids belongings if time permits.

“Satisfactorily; no known

“Satisfactorily; no known members of their kin remain. The caretakers were twisted even beyond their own standards – if they have such a thing as “taboos”, these have surely been broken.”

“But as to our immediate concern - do we hunt for these stragglers here or continue? I suggest we check main offices, but prolonged fruitless searching may give them time to contact and muster a proper response team…”

Du’minh looks above to Gy-Nath on the top catwalk as he speaks this question, awaiting the captain’s orders. Then he crouches and searches through Foreman’s belongings if no threats remain nearby.

Ya'shenn carefully

Ya'shenn carefully retrieves the Qualith-inscribed crystal and puts it away. She keeps the dorje ready, however, in the (unlikely) event that any of these graith decide to resume their attack.

Odd name for an illithid, the psion muses when the half-dragon mentions Bliss. Given the limited, and disturbing, range of experiences that the ghaik generally find pleasurable (aside from abnormal freaks like Lavendar), Ya'shenn decides that she really doesn't want to know how Bliss came by its name.

Since the half-dragon mentioned two more ghaik, the psion looks around. Even though the ability of these illithids to levitate had seemed inhibited, probably by the collars, she even scans the ceiling. No illithid assassin is likely to ambush them after the battle, but all the same...

OOC: Listen and Spot checks. Also, a readied action to use the dorje if any of the barbarians decide to attack again.

[3 fleeing workers dead.

[3 fleeing workers dead. Brutal!]

The workers are well and truly routed now, running from the githyanki as quickly as their legs will carry them. Surely they now know the consequences for those who would treat illithid as fellow citizens. The informal warband meets back up on the killing floor to exchange infomation. Gy-Nath soon comes down and joins them as well.

Ar'dru takes Meathook's head, though due to the collar must mangle it a bit instead of cleanly severing the neck. There is not much left of Foreman's head once Du'minh is done with it.

Ya'shenn sees that the punishment collars the illithid here wear have qualith written on them. Intrigued, she studies the one Foreman's corpse wears. The qualith states the illithid's crime: "Theft from other illithid for profit." The collar Meathook wears reads "Assault in anger on other illithid." The reminants of Pig-Killer's collar are damaged by acid, however, and Ya'shenn can only read "Habitual consumption of ..."

As she puzzles over the remains of Pig-Killer's collar, a soothing voice rings in her mind. The 'voice' reminds her somewhat of her old mentor, and is comforting in its own way. The other githyanki 'hear' the voice as well, and for each it reminds them somewhat of an old personal friend.

~I am glad you've stopped. Please, do not kill any more of the workers, they are simple laborers trying to provide for themselves and their families. Besides, I abhor violence. Yet it seems I must witness some more and soon. If you would hurry, slayers, and come to the uppermost office. Pig-Killer is here with me.

There is a tinge of fear in the psionic sending.

[eek, that's what happens

[eek, that's what happens when I take a long time posting, I guess.  Anyway, neither of the illithid have anything of value on them.  Indeed, as opposed to every other illithid they've ever run into, these two do not wear fine expensive robes, but rather work-clothes and leather aprons.  Their hands are even calloused, unheard of among illithids.]

Du’minh spins towards the

Du’minh spins towards the office building when he receives the psionic sending, looking for a possible spying eye among windows. His heavy flail is back in his hands, ready to swing as if an invisible assassin should appear any moment now.

“Sounds like a trap to me. Brother, did you learn anything else of these Bliss and Pigkiller?”

Even as he speaks, the Rish does his best to clear his thoughts of compromising information – if illithids are spying on them from afar, they might as well be trying to dig in their minds. The fact that the voice reminds him of K’dar does little to calm him down.

Though he keeps his thoughts empty, Du’minh casts an ever so brief direct look at Daraz – he is their most stealthy member to investigate the uppermost office and can disguise himself as a worker to boot.

Ya'shenn's fingers had been

Ya'shenn's fingers had been tracing the Qualith inscription on Pigkiller's collar. Now, they pause. "I was thinking about Bliss just a moment ago," she remarks to the others. The illithid, in other words, may be prying into their minds.

She runs her fingers over the inscription again, thinking about what dietary taboos the mind flayers might have, and the fact that Bliss appears to be afraid of the other ghaik...

The psion smiles, in a distinctly nasty way. She could be mistaken, of course, but...

It seems reasonable to assume that the mind-voice is that of Bliss. Despite the hazards of attempting mind-speech with a ghaik (to one's own sanity, if nothing else), Ya'shenn reaches out for the mind of the talkative illithid. Should she be successful:

~Your concern for your herd is touching, Ya'shenn projects, referring to the graith workers, and infusing the words with sarcasm and disgust. ~And Pigkiller minus Its collar makes you quite nervous. You don't mind if I rejoice in your plight, I hope?

~Violent AND sadistic. Little wonder Zerthimon left your fold. Not that my own kin are any better, but how does it feel to be second to the very worst? Anyway I thought I had a deal with the duthka'gith, information in return for a quick death. I held up MY part of the bargain. Funny, for all their faults, I always heard githyanki had a sense of honor.  Bliss replies, but dispite the sarcasm, Ya'shenn can feel the ghaik's fear growing.

Ya'shenn bristles visibly, but quickly realizes that Bliss is using the insults it hopes will be most effective. She actually has a certain appreciation for such things, and with that awareness, it's difficult for her to be as offended as the mind flayer might like.

Be that as it may, Ya'shenn is a psion, and the irony of the situation thoroughly warms her heart. She savors the mind flayer's imminent fear of decerebration, and lingers over it.

The mention of information gets her interest, however. She looks over at Ar'dru. "The mind flayer claims that it --" she almost says "made a deal with," but does not want to imply that her honorable cousin might actually collaborate with a ghaik. "...that it has spoken to you, and offered you information in exchange for a quick death. Is this so? If I'm not mistaken, Pigkiller is a cannibal and hungry at that..."

"Do not question my honor

"Do not question my honor creature" Ar'Dru mentally rebukes Bliss. "I keep my word and will be with you shortly."

Ar'dru stows away Meathooks head (Did his weapon look useful at all?) and takes off towards the office, blade in one hand and carrying Du'minh in the other if he is willing.

(edit) Wasn't sure if those thoughts were broadcast to all. If not -

"I did indeed promise the ghaik a quick death over a slow one if the creature gave up information on its fellows and the house. While I was attacked before it provided any useful strategic information this could be a good opporunity to finish off both beasts at once and to search for documentation."

With that said Ar'dru takes off as mentioned above.

(Ar'dru won't go straight into the office, he plans to throw some smoke in there first)
