Du'minh and Vivec search around the builing for likely hiding places for an illithid. Void Keys sits at the very top of Silver Void Street, directly opposite the huge, sprawling, Silver Void Steelworks. That is out, for it is a busy place, churning out smoke even at this post-antipeak hour. Silver Void Street terminates on Swans Way, a street far more like metropolitan Sigil than the ghetto of Git'riban. Swans Way is a wide street, perhaps twenty feet or more. Several businesses and apartments are within 100 paces of Void Keys, though it might be expected that these have been screened by the Silver Eyes. Far more likely, there is a place just under one hundred feet into Undersigil where the ghaik hide.

There are a few manhole covers up the street. Swans Way, considered "Sigil", not "Git'riban" has a sewer system in better repair than is typical in the githyanki ghetto down the hill.

One hundred paces back down Silver Void Street brings one into The Tunnels, crowded tenements built into every concievable space, above street level and below. An illithid would have a difficult time hiding here. Unless ... Unless it had a portal to the interior of one of the 'closed doors'.

You see, few blokes really pay rent in Git'riban. Instead, somebody looking for a kip will either pay a 'landlord' to find one for them, or try to stake out a place of their own. Empty apartments are usually heavily trapped (by the local 'landlords' who everybody hates because a lot of 'em are Sharpshadows), so unless one is a professional, it pays not to open a door that's closed. The custom in Git'riban is to leave a door open if expecting business or visitors. Merchants rarely put up signs (unless on the fringes of the ghetto or otherwise catering to barbarians as well as gith), and residents just know where to go and who to talk to if they need someting.

Ya'shenn looks back toward the warlock, and belatedly explains: "A ghaik will be nearby, I am almost certain. Others seek it, but I can hardly let them fight alone."

She doesn't add that in her weakened state, she'd hardly be of much use, anyway. Especially against a Tamer, if Mim's watcher happens to belong to that creed. While she may be... a bit lapsed, Ya'shenn is still a Githyanki, and can't suffer the thought of an illithid getting away alive. Especially since it undoubtedly aims to cause even more trouble for them later.

"Go. I am content to get you zerth-lovers out of my sight. Slay whatever Enemy you can find, cutters, but beware, for the price of success can be high" Schaaz-Khaal waves his hands and the lighting becomes more normalized. Runes no longer glow on the archways. "You will be able to unlock the front door now."

As Daraz and Ya'shenn leave [assuming they do] they notice the warlock grab charcoals and a scroll, and begin meticulously copying Mim's mark, including precise location on the head.

Ya'shenn pauses just before leaving. What in the Liberator's name could she say to a gith who had just lost his own son -- in part at her own hands? What could possibly be sufficient? For once, the telepath is at a loss for words, though her struggle is evident on her face. In the end, she departs in silence.

As she and Daraz leave Void Keys, at a point where she feels they are well out of the earshot of others, Ya'shenn leans over to speak, very softly, into the very ambiguous gith's ear, rather than using the telepathic link.

"...And don't think I've forgotten about you, either."

In a very different tone of 'voice,' she espers to the others:

~We come. I'm inclined to advise against splitting up.

Du’minh blinks a moment while he scans over Rey’arteb.

“I... must have been mistaken, then…”

At Ya’shenn’s report his focus sets differently and Du’minh’s hand glides to rest on the handle of his flail.

“So we hunt. Mobility is far greater below, as our quarry surely is aware. Besides, even the ghaiks know to keep even lower key than usual with such an abundance of dabus. Let us head downstairs.”

The Rish will lead for the nearest entrance, keeping an eye on anybody in the streets on the way who might seem like lookouts. When eventually the duo is in the cellars, Du’minh will start off with leading them to the locales underneath Void Keys and search out from there.

OOC:
*sigh* Why do I even bother with these untrained skill checks? Double natural ones will have the Evil DM wetting himself in glee very soon, I'm sure. Wouldn't be the first time I've rolled them, though.

For what it's worth, Ya'shenn draws and loads her own crossbow as the group descends. To judge from the way her eyes move, the psion is doing her best to be highly alert. Once the group is indoors, she takes particular care to scan the ceiling, as well as looking behind her from time to time.

[OOC: The description of the clairvoyance ability seems to indicate it can be used to peek around corners, into the room at the opposite side of a door, and so on. Seems logical that Ya'shenn would do so at corners, doorways and such. She'd let the group know when she's doing it.]

The four githyanki make another quick sweep of the abovegound area to get their bearings. Working under the assumption that a trained ghaik evesdropper might have thrice the range expected, whether via spell or item, they make note of a hundred-yard radius around Void Keys.

[1 vote for sewers, all in favor? Actually think about it, would the illithid 'wiretapper' rather be in a dank, but dirty sewer, or a clean apartment in enemy territory? I'm inclined to think they'd rather be dirty than dead, and not want to share a wall or three with gith, no matter how well locked or trapped a nearby apartment could be.

{EDIT} Besides, I was gonna give you a chance to find 'em whichever way you chose.

Without a word Ar'dru wipes the blade, tightens his hold on the grip and swings down hard at linds' outstreached arm, hoping for a clean cut well above the spreading poison.

The Sewers Below Swans Way

The four gith pry open a manhole, about fifty feet down an alley off Swans Way, and decend into Sigil's underwold. They find that the drainage of Swans Way is in a state of repair that many residences in Git'riban would envy. Water flows down the center of the circular tunnels, which tend to average eight feet in diameter, though numerous pipes empty from the walls.

The center of the main passage has about six inches of flowing water. The party makes a sweep of all passages within 100 feet of Void Keys, but find nowhere an illithid could hide. None of them wants to be the first to suggest giving up, so they keep searching, expanding their sweep in case the illithids 'listening' to Mim have some way of expanding their telepathic range.

At one point Vivec notices the black rat under his shirt is lifting her nose out of his collar and sniffing the air intently. The party passes a pipe of about four foot diameter high on the wall which spills only the barest trickle, but as they pass it by, Ista K'ait tweaks Vivec painfully on the chest.

Barely half a moment before this, Draz's attention is brought to the pipe because the trickle of water coming from it sounds a little different than others like it. He notices cracks in the porcelin around the pipe which the watter splashes through.

Hmm? To Ya'shenn's (unexceptional) eyes and ears, nothing seems particularly out of place about this pipe. Except that Daraz's attention has been drawn to it.

...And it does make a perfectly adequate spot for either defense or ambush. High up, and enclosed.

The psion makes a focused effort to keep her mind clear of the rapid succession of mental images and speculation that want to take up residence in her surface thoughts at this moment. She normally takes pride in her mental defenses, but that does not make them impossible to bypass.

After looking up toward the indicated pipe for several moments, her eyes briefly scan the nearby area of the ceiling. Holding up a hand for silence, and to signal the others, Ya'shenn edges quietly along the wall, along the way they came, putting a decent amount of distance between herself and the questionable... er... pipe. The woman's posture straightens in a way that the others, by now, have likely learned to associate with the manifestation of psionic powers, as Ya'shenn's gaze appears to defocus for several moments.

[OOC: Manifest Clairvoyance to see what's so interesting inside the pipe. Also making clear that she's definitely not directly below the pipe, and is edging along the near wall, so as to be out of direct line of sight of.. .whatever's up there.]

As Ya'shenn backs off and begins her meditation, Daraz peers more closely at the pipe. It is a little more than four feet in diameter. The only thing that distinguishes it from the other drain pipes in the area is its size in comparison to the scant trickle of water issuing from it, and the fact that it seems to be in worse repair than most of the rest of the setting.

Vivec notices, however, that the chips and cracks around the mouth of the pipe are more sinister than first glance suggests. Claw marks, from some large creature mark the inside of the pipe, as if some beast leapt from where they stand and clawed its way inside.

Meanwhile ...

Ya'shenn uses her clairvoyant abilities to scry inside the pipe. It is not very far, about two dozen feet, before she runs into a barrier. Not a physical one, but something is preventing her from seeing any farther up the pipe. [Taking 10 on her Know: Psi roll, Ya'shenn determines there is a nondetection effect in place.]

The psion's eyes narrow to slits, as she attempts to fight off rising feelings of annoyance and frustration. It would follow that It would take steps to protect itself from clairvoyance, if it meant to spy on the inhabitants of Git'riban.

~Whatever's up there is well protected from clairvoyant observation, Ya'shenn informs the others (not to mention whatever else might be eavesdropping on their conversation). ~I believe you know what that implies.

The psion takes the time to clairvoyantly go over every inch of the non-warded interior for clues.

[OOC: Anything unusual about the 'visible' part of the pipe's interior -- you know, like a glistening trail of slime?]

Ya'shenn notices the claw marks on the inside of the pipe. Illithid would not make such marks, instead it looks like some sort of medium-sized clawed beast.

Du’minh secures his flail in the custom-built holding contraption on the lower back of his armor, and draws out his bow to cover the pipe opening.

“It implies we go after it, claws or not. I suggest we move through in pairs, starting with our two more agile and stealthy members. These armor spikes don’t do well to mask my progress while crawling down a pipe.”

Instead of two of us - Allow me to go in first alone and Daraz to bring up the rear - just in case this happens to be a trap to sandwich us in. The Temple of Tiamat

With a single strong stroke, Ar'dru lops off Lind's arm. Though she tries very hard to be brave, Lind screams when her arm is severed and falls to the floor. Ar'dru examines the arm and notes with pride that the spreading mark had not reached his cut, which fell about halfway between elbow and shoulder. As he watches, the poison takes over the arm, turning the golden scales and flesh black. A black stain even spreads part-way out into the pool of blood gushing from the severed arm.

"Hrrg, Nyaarg, b ... bastards! The Avernians took my priests, didn't they?" Lind stands and casts an incantation in draconic, summoning a ball of flame into her hand, and burns the stump. She snarls and stumbles over to the altar. She frees the terrified gnome, who is too frightened and shocked to even run. Lind then picks up the severed arm and places it on the altar. She does not thank Ar'dru, but gives him a polite bow. She tells tells both him and the gnome that they may stay or go as they desire, then sets about righting the tumbled ceremonial furnishings before kneeling before the altar.

With a little boost from Du'minh, Daraz and Vivic easily climb into the pipe. It proves to not be very steep, and therfore easy to traverse. Moving carefully and quietly, they climb up the pipe. It is not far before Daraz stops and listens, for he thinks he hears something beyond the dribbling of water. He cannot qute make it out, so crawls on a little further. Then he hears it again, like somebody whispering in the darkness ahead. He stops again to listen. This time it is unmistakable. Somebody is whispering ... two somebodys. Daraz can barely make it out, but the whisperers seem to be arguing about something.

" ... sss ... stupid. Why are we waiting for ssslayers to find usss?"

"Fool, we are sssafer here than we would be making a break for a portal. Jussst sssit tight."

"... sss ... I hate thisss. I sstill ssssay they are sssearching for usss now, and that we ssshould have reported back to the houssse."

"Imbecile, you ssay they are sseaching for uss and you want to make a run for the portals?"

"Better to chance it than ssstay here like two ratsss in a hole."

"Fool"

"We could sssend the devourer ... "

"No. We'll need it if we are discovered. If that happensss we sshould sssplit up. I'll head for the portalss, you head for the ssstreet."

" ... ssss ... "

"Fine, I'll head for the ssstreet."

Daraz holds up his hand to stop Vivec and readies his sword.

Telepathically to everyone: "I can hear two ghaik talking ap ahead. They're planning to split up if they're attacked. One's going to head to the street, the other to a portal, probably around here somewhere. Oh, does anyone know what a devourer is? It doesn't sound very nice, and whatever it is they've got one with them."

He also relays the converation:

Background flavor note from NiceDM: Why are the ghaik talking instead of using telepathy? Answer: They've got orders to "recieve, don't transmit", fearing detect psi.

[I'd been wondering. Are they chatting away in Undercommon or a gith language, though? ]

~Intellect devourer, probably. [OOC: Githyanki are generally depicted in various sources as knowing a good bit about the most common creatures illithids keep around as guards (examples -- intellect devourers and grimlocks).]

Ya'shenn 'listens' closely to the conversation. Her first thought is, rather to her own surprise, No wonder their empire fell. She does not consider herself especially brave, but still...!

Even so, these two could probably suck brains as efficiently as any other illithid, and should not be underestimated.

Her second thought is that they've been fortunate indeed to be (seemingly) undetected thus far. It's not easy to sneak up on a ghaik.

~Based on that conversation, they believe the 'portal' route is a good deal safer for them than the 'street' route. If we must give names to these ghaik, 'Street' is the more aggressive of the pair, while 'Portal' will run straight for the House. Whichever we pick, we should aim to take down one of them as quickly as we can.

“Gith’s blood, they must not get away! Can you get close enough to scout out their visages and positions without notice? We need to block off escape routes and lock them down.”

[OOC: Actually, I wonder if it's possible to scry past the 'blind spot' and determine where the far end of the pipe leads?]
