“It is highly alarming with such breach in security among the ranks of the Eyes. I suppose there is the possibility that Schaaz-Khaal did indeed take precautions to learn Mim’s true allegiance but sought to play the ghaiks at their own shadow game. Still, we should expect the worst – our assassination team is currently en route to take the traitor down.”

Du’minh reaches out through the telepathic link to contact Ya’shenn.

“Take the utmost precautions with your target, sister. I have learned that Mim is a spy much deeper than what could be expected – she may have special items, allies or other aid that shields her from psionic detection.”

“I also ask that you attempt to seize any evidence of her activities – her “master” Schaaz-Khaal is an important figure in operations to which I am associated.”

Returning his attention to K’dar, the Rish-I-Chal listens carefully on his update on order of day among the Silver Eyes. His eyes widen at the news of Gith’s sword.

“So the Sword now allegedly lies in the hands of the commander of the True? That is… astounding, to say the least. I can understand the overall reason why we joined the Eyes, though I am a bit leery of the whole bloc division that is developing. On a longer term I rather hope to work for unity among the People, for the reforming of an empire that once was.”

The hunter sighs, nodding to his old friend.

“Regardless, I appreciate the openness, K’dar - let us speak more of this when time allows. May silver winds speed your way to recovery.”

Unless his captain has more to say, Du’minh departs and finds his way to the old sharpener’s shop while staying mindful of telepathic exchanges among his companions.

Ar'dru pauses upon landing and takes seven deep breaths of the smog-laden air.

Upon reaching a decision he packs a significant amount of his worldly wealth deep into his pack (although he leaves a few prominant pieces out for trade) and strides towards the nearest temple of Tiamat. Ar'dru approaches the first acolyte of substance that he sees and booms

"I seek to arrange a pilgrimage to the home of the great mother of dragons. To whom must I speak?"

OOC- the latest copy of my online PC sheet seems to have died. I might have a backup at home but otherwise I'll have to re-do my purchases from earlier. Does anyone remember how much gold we've earned so far?

The kobold at the door bows, and bids you wait inside before scampering off to find his master. The temple is like a large cavern. The floor slopes up toward the center, and golden-trimmed carpets cover the central dias. The alter in the center holds the temple's most sacred object; a cast-off tooth from one of the maws of Tiamat herself. Ar'dru knows this because as soon as he enters, half a dozen kobold show up to fawn over him. They show him around the temple, pointing out archetectural features, telling stories, and constantly inquiring if they can do anything else for the duthka'gith.

After pehaps half an hour, someone of authority finally shows up, entering through the main doors (the kobolds must have run out to fetch her from home or something.)

"Welcome, son of flame. I am Lind, Theopolitan of Her Great and Terrible Majesty." She is a very draconic-looking humanoid, with long jaws, but she is only about five feet tall. Ar'dru can tell that under her fine silken robes, she is lithe and light. Her scales are glittering gold, and she has whiskers. "I understand you desire to travel to Her mountains? I can provide the portal, but I would know your business there."

Replies Ar'dru, his head held high as he swallows the temptation to ask about the clerics lineage.

~How certain are you that Schaaz-Khaal himself can be trusted, brother? Either before, during, or after the event itself, I’m sure he will develop an interest in the fate of his apprentice. Of the three, it’s not clear that Mim bears a psionic seal, or indeed any discernable sign of enthrallment. I would rather have more proof than the word of… our source. Perhaps I will discover something that others have missed, but I may have to involve the elder warlock if I take the time to do so.

Once she receives a response, the psion adds the following:

~Incidentally, I would like you to see this. [She sends Du’minh detailed visual images of the extraordinary numbers of dabus in Git’riban at the moment.] I am no Sigil native, but I do not like this. We should speak more of this later.

As I’ve understood the Mindlink power, it enables telepathic communication but does not allow the psion to spy on participants’ withheld thoughts. Not that Du’minh has anything to hide in this case, but he would not by default be divulging constant sensory input.

“I am not certain that Schaaz-Khaal can be trusted, but do not move against him without incriminating evidence. A brother of mine is currently taking steps to find out the extent of damage within our ranks.”

The Rish-I-Chal furrows his brows at the visualizations of dabus in Git’riban.

“Unsettling news, sister, though I would expect the city keepers to eventually make an appearance in the wake of such an extensive battlefield. Needless to say we should keep low profile around them, lest we attract … insurmountable adversity.”

“I am en route to the sharpener and will let you know when I am in position to commence the strike.”

Lind bows to Ar'dru. "I will provide you with a guide, one of my household. He will accompany you, and bear the proper paperwork should you be challenged by the Baatezu. Follow his lead, take flight if and when he does, slay only when he does. I will warn you, you may find each other ... disagreeable, but he will follow my orders to the letter, and so it would be wise for you to pay heed to his."

She sends one of the kobolds to fetch the guide while she chats with Ar'dru, mostly describing what he can expect on the other side of the portal. The portal, it seems, opens into a small border-burg on the edjes of Tiamat's realm populated mostly by abashai. Some serve Her Great and Terrible Majesty, while others are spies for the Lords of the Nine, so caution is advised. It is also implied, but not directly stated, that a donation to the temple is in order in exchange for their help.

After a short time (perhaps 20 more minutes), the guide arrives. He is a very stout draconic being, not quite Ar'dru's height but definitely out-weighing him. His scales are a tarnished silver, and unlike Lind sports wings. He is heavily armored in plate mail that looks to have seen action. He bears a greatsword across his back, and carries a very large heavy crossbow. His name is Bozzrundukarn (Boz for short), and his personality is ... abrasive to say the least, but just as Lind said, he follows her orders as if they came from Tiamat herself.

Stopping a safe distance away from Void Keys, Daraz hold up his hand. (Ideally he will step into an alley or somesuch). He looks for any evestroppers before speaking.

For just a moment, Daraz feels a light prodding at the very surface of his mind, and is certain that Ya'shenn is its source. A reminder that the telepathic link is available to him, should he choose to use it. Both he and Vivec 'hear' the following:

~Are you quite sure you wouldn't rather use this, instead?

"My thanks for your gracious assistance" states Ar'dru, giving a moderate bow to Lind "Allow me to extend a small token of my thanks to your glorious temple for aiding my journey." Ar'Dru passes her an elaborately worked ring worth about 30 gold.

Turning to Boz Ardru nods as though to a fellow warrior, albeit one of significantly lower rank. "Please lead on Bozzrundukarn, I am eager to be underway."

~I trust that the three of us will be able to subdue Mim. I'm actually more concerned about the older warlock -- Schaaz-Khaal. He will react to what we do, if and when he should learn of it. We could either involve him, attempt to distract him, or deceive him. There might also be other customers present.

~I would prefer that we can clearly prove Mim is enthralled before we act; doing that would likely mean either searching him thoroughly or assaying him psionically. Also, we should not harm the elder warlock unless he turns out to be one of 'them' as well. If Mim turns out to have a visible mark, or other clear sign of enslavement, this would be a simple matter, for few would object to putting down a thrall spy. Unfortunately, we can't be absolutely sure whether Schaaz-Khaal can be trusted. There is also a chance that we may not be able to independently prove whether or not he is enthralled at all.

~As for my own abilities... [there is silence over the mental link for a few moments] Some are of a sort that I would hesitate to even consider using against another child of Gith, even in extreme circumstances. If I must, I can disrupt certain autonomic functions of the lower brain, which is a way of saying that I can make someone forget how to breathe. Unconsciousness and death tend to result, though this depends on the individual's strength of will and natural resistance to such manipulation.

~The captain appears to place much trust [this is clearly directed at both Daraz and Vivec] in your specialized skills as regards this particular task. Therefore, I place trust in your judgement as well.

Boz snorts and motions for Ar'dru to follow. In less than five minutes, Ar'dru, a civilized gith, has Bozzurundukarn pretty much figured out. Boz is a brute, who does not speak when actions can speak for him, and when he does speak, it is only in Draconic. Make that a brute with an attitude.

"We must procure a potal key. The key is fresh blood, follow me." He takes wing, only going a few blocks before motioning to Ar'dru. He hovers, loading his crossbow, and shoots some lone berk on the street. He signals to the duthk'gith to retrieve the body while he reloads and circles around for any witnesses.

The victim turns out to be a dustman pulling a corpse-cart. Seems that Boz has a sense of humor after all.

I am a marksman and a sneak, the confines of the shop may present a problem for me. That said, I can easily hide a loded crossbow under my cloak and maybe get one shot off while nobody expects it. I will leave it to you to determine the best way of exposing the thrall--that is not something I am very skilled at. If Mim is the only thrall, it might be possible to lure him to a window so I could shoot him--a loud noise or a scuffle outside might do. This is, of course an optimist's plan.

Ar'dru snorts and rolls his eyes at Boz's crudeness and lack of conviction as he swoops down to retrieve the body. He pauses well before landing to assess whether there are any nearby who might report him for the murder before picking up the body and returning to Boz's side.

The actual portal is an archway back in the basement of the temple. Boz leads Ar'dru to a chapel underneath the main temple. The cobbles are bloodstained, and an altar lies before the arch, flanked by golden brazzers filled with incense. Boz, however, simply takes the dustman's corpse from the duthka'gith and dashes it uncerimoniously against the side of the archway.

The portal sputters to life, the smell of brimstone wafting through on a strong breeze.

***

The portal exits in an elaborately carved archway of black basalt. The archway stands on the top of a hill of dark stone. The landscape around is rugged, and similar hills to the one on which they stand, surround them, piling atop one another in great heaps of black stone, until they meet the great bluffs and chasms of The Mountain itself. The archway seems to be all that is left of a black tower, and similar ruins are planted like flags to decay atop most of the hills around. A few are void of all but a few wrought stones sitting atop the black rock, but a few, very few, seem to be in better repair, though no lights shine in this 'city'.

And a city it may be, for lines of smoke snake from some of the less damaged ruins, and from caves within the dark hills and gullies.

Boz crouches down as soon as they hit Avernus, and spends long moments scanning the terrain for any response to their arrival before flying quickly to another hill and laying low there for several minutes.

So it goes, they stay hidden whenever something is seen by either pair of draconic eyes, and move swiftly when the coast is clear.

Ar'dru follows suit, unimpressed that secrecy is apparently necessary for a worshipper in their own god's realm. Surely a test of strength and worthiness would be more fitting for a warrior of his standing! He keeps his complaints to himself for now however, content to rely on Lind's wisdom if not that of his current guide.

It's too good to last.

You are high in the mountiains, the smaller hills dwindling behind, when you encounter the patrols. You must creep among the rocks and crags, for atop the sharp ridges stand towers and narrow fortresses shaped like sailing ships in a great black armada. Their windows smoke and winged abashai flock about the rooftops. The fortresses stand like a blockading fleet. Being stumbled upon by a partol was inevitable. The first bunch are a trio of black abashai that pop out of a cave as you are trying to circumvent yet another fortified tower.

"Look toothy, half-gith." Boz rumbles when they spot you.

They grip their spears and demand to see your travel papers.

"My 'travel pass' is right here, under my armor, lapdog of Bel." Boz growls in response.

[Evil DM - Here it is, they want your travel pass and you ain't got one. Make an intimidate check, but I will also make a super secret special modifier depending on your IC response. I will tell you your DC, though. 35.]

"You would dare challenge an emissary from Tiamat's own Sigil Temple! I am no simple minded prime you insolent devil! Stand aside or I shall add your heads to my tribute to the dark queen!"

Ar'dru is fairly salivating with excitement at the prospect of action after skulking from hilltop to hilltop for the past few hours.

The baatezu hesitate for a moment. They glance back and forth at each other for a moment, then take flight. As soon as they turn to flee, Boz brings up his crossbow and shoots one. The bolt rips through its wing, causing it to fall behind the others.

"Bring them down, or we'll be hacking our way through a legion." Boz growls, and takes out his two-handed sword. Boz's blade proves to be a wavy-bladed sword of some strange black alloy.

Boz proves to be an extremely stong flier. Fast, and with his bulk, a battering ram on the wing. He quickly catches up to the trailing abashai and tackles it in mid-air. The devil drops it's spear and claws at him, but Boz crashes headlong into a cliff face, and the devil finds itself between a rock and a hard case.

The other two abashai are headed towards the closest ridge-fort, about a mile or so above them.

Du'minh

Du'minh walks back to The Heart of The Void. The door to the sharpener's shop is wide open, an invitation for buisiness. Within, however, the old gith lies asleep in a chair. He mumbles and whimpers in his sleep, and seems perpetually on the verge of awakening, but does not. Not until Du'minh is nearly standing over him. Then he wakes with a start and stares, wide eyed and seemingly petrified with fear for an instant. Then he yawns and rubs his eyes, the instant change from alarmed to completely calm is slightly unsettling. He looks at Du'minh and smiles.

"Ah, Du'minh the Rish-i-Chal, yes? Lovely blades the daggers of the mage hunters, but surely you haven't dulled your ring-dagger yet. Have you another blade to bring back to cutting form? Arrows, perhaps? What is your pleasure, warrior?"

As Ar'dru speeds after the fleeing abashai, one turns to the other, then spins to face the pursuing duthka'gith. It lunges forth with it's spear, but the baatorian blade fails to pierce Ar'dru's godsteel armor. His own blade merely hacks off the tip of one of the abashai's horns, as the quick little devil is a practiced aerial combatant. It aims a tail-sting at Ar'dru's face, but once again the tools of Gith guard her child, as he blocks the blow with his sword-hilt.

Meanwhile, behind him, sounds of beaking and tumbling rocks, accompanied by dull thuds, come from the spot where Boz tackled the other devil.

Behind an unassuming façade, Du’minh carefully scans over the sharpener and his shop for magical auras and anything amiss. Did Grazz note the location of a thrall mark or other hard evidence to expose the gith?
The Rish nods a formal greeting and puts on a casual demeanour, unstrapping one of his quivers of arrows from his right leg to keep the sharpener occupied for a while.

“Arrows for today. The streets of Git’riban are restless with violence and these days you have to be ready for anything.”

Once the old gith is busy at work, Du’minh takes a casual stroll around the shop to discreetly snoop for clues of anything out of the ordinary. Depending on where and how the sharpener works, the warrior will try to manoeuvre out of his field of vision so he can more freely probe his surroundings for evidence without getting spotted.

“I am in position, brothers and sisters. The old gith behaved strangely as I came upon him, yet otherwise I see no sign that he is enthralled.”

In the meantime, the hunter maintains seemingly casual conversation.

“Your knowledge of my caste would seem to be as keen as the blades you treat, sharpener. What else has your eyes and ears been graced with lately?”

[DM - wow, pretty good search check.]

The old gith bends over his work with whetstone and grinder, but continues to make small talk. "Yes, Sigil has always been a violent place, with so many barbarian races living in close quarters. Open warfare is only kept in check by Her Serenity. I heard the illithid attacked Git'riban yesterday. Did you see any of the action, warrior?"

As Du'minh putters around the shop, he sees nothing unusual. The sharpener lives like he would expect an old Mlar to, with functional and spartan accomidations.

Du'minh does notice, however, as the old gith is working on the arrowheads, that under the thinning hair on the back of his head is the shadow of a scar. He cannot tell its shape, if it is a glyph or just an old wound, without shaving the back of the old gith's skull.

"I also heard a rumor that there was a ulitharid among the raiders, and that it was slain. Please tell me you know who the slayer is. She, he, or they have some free blade-work awaiting them here, as a token of my respect."

*** *** ***

Ar'dru continues after the lead abashai. His blade meets smokey air, though, as the devil dips and dives away from his attack. Suddenly, he feels a sharp pain in the side of his face, as the abashai he passed by hits him with its tail-sting. The wound sizzles and smokes, as acid pours from the abashai's stinger into Ar'dru's face. [7 damage, and make a DC 14 fort save]

He has succeeded in preventing the devils from flying straight back and sounding the alarm, but is finding the aereal accrobatics makes his opponents devilishly hard to hit.

“Rumours have a tendency to get blown out of proportion, seasoned one. I shall pass on your extension of service if I come upon any of these alleged raiders.”

Du’minh narrows his eyes upon spotting the scar, keeping focused on striking down the sharpener once the signal is given.

“It seems Grazz was correct about the sharpener bearing a mind mark - I think I have spotted the scar from his enthrallment. Once you three also are ready to engage, I shall subdue him and confirm it as such, before passing judgment.”

Ar'dru shrugs off this discomfort of the Devils sting but the pain of the blow and the smoke in the air is enough to cause his next attack to swing wide of the mark.

The black abashai swarm around Ar'dru, and a flurry of spear points and acid-drippinging stingers seeking his life. One of the stings finds a mark on Ardu's scalp, an he once again is smells sulfur and burning flesh.

[Evidently not. Maybe it'd help to know what you've got to roll. AC 22 as per FC2.]

The abashai attack and retreat in a coordinated fashion, their effective attacks catching the duthka'gith off guard. Another sting lands, seering pain errupting now from the back of Ar'dru's neck.

[+9 damage=24 now. Make 2 fort saves, DC 14, fail=extra d6 damage down the line...]

The devils hiss and laugh. They spit foul obscenities impuning Ar'dru's honor. Suddenly, one stops abruptly in mid-air. Portruding from it's thigh is a wicked-headed crossbow bolt. It is tied to a thin wire, which in turn leads back to Boz.

One glace is all it takes to let Ar'dru know that, though the silver warrior has conqored his foe, the battle went not well for him. Acid fumes smoke from his left eye socket. Still, he plants himself heavily on a slab of basalt, and yanks on the metal cord. He swings his foe toward the opposite wall of the canyon.

The other abashai hisses and makes some foul sounds in baatorian. The words hang heavy in the air, almost making it ripple. Ar'dru knows that it is casing a spell.

The Pain of the stings shocks Ar'dru to his senses. Calming his mind and focussing his rage he spots the remaining Abashai soaring in on an updraft and knows when he must strike.

His blade strikes out again, this time not with rage but with calm conviction.

The devil screeches as Ar'dru's greatsword bites deep, crushing it's collarbone. It tries to retaliate with a tail strike, but Ar'dru's skill is great, and he blocks the venomous sting with the blade.

Meanwhile, the other abashai first tries in vain to fight against Boz. The cord resists its baatorian blade, and Boz is too strong. So, the devil resorts to another tactic. It dives at the silver-scaled warrior, looking to impale him with its spear. Boz barely has time to drop the line and pick up his sword. Both warriors are highly successful. The spear punctures Boz's breastplate, but it brings the devil in close to a larger and stronger warrior. Boz grasps his sword by the hilt and the blade, and uses the quillons against his foe, smashing into the abashai's face and bearing it down to the hard, black rock.

If there are no objections from the others, Daraz will use his hat of disguise to shift his facial features and height slightly, so he is not immediately identifiable. He will then walk to the shop, taking note of all the windows that provide a good angle to take a shot as well as any possible exits--doors or otherwise. He will then enter the shop and see if he can see Mim

The abashai tries to flee from Ar'dru, screeching at the top of its lungs. The black rock of the mountain seems to swollow the echoes quickly, but overtop the the ship-like fort on the ridge, more abashai circle. There is a patrol of about a dozen pulling away from the top tower.

"Finish him!" Boz yells. He rises painfully, the devil's spear portruding from his belly. He yanks it out, and even from the air, Ar'dru's draconic eyes see the splash of blood.

[Ar'dru gets additional 'attack of opportunity' on the fleeing abashai, but if you don't succeed, you'll be in hot water for sure.]

Ar'dru buries his heavy blade deep into the fleeing abashai's back, cleaving it nearly in twain. The creature's dying screams fill the air. Ar'dru looks up and sees a flight of about a dozen abashai from the fortress turn towards the cries. A dozen more pour from the windows and circle about, forming up.

Boz growls and struggles into the air. He throws the abashai's spear as far as he can down the gully. "I'm bleeding too much, I'll lead them away. Find a hole. Give it a thousand-count and wing it as fast as you can to the summit." He indicates the peak of the mountain they've been climbing, "There will be a cave. If I survive, I'll meet you back in the City of Black Smokes, the portal to Sigil may not be in the same archway, but it will not wander far."

"If you succeed, I will not have failed, and may Her brood look for Bozzrundukarn on the Shoals of Despond. If you fail ... " his eyes, steel-colored orbs with black reptilian slits, lock upon Ar'dru's and he hisses, "Do not fail."

He then flies off, trailing blood.

Ar'dru is plesantly surprised by the honor shown by Boz as well as his dedication to his duty.

With a curt nod Ar'dru wheels around and hugs the mountain side searching for a hole to wait in as Boz leads the devils off.

Once the coast seems clear Ar'dru kicks away from the mountan and flies with all speed towards the summit.

Ar'dru lies low under a slab of basalt until the pursuit has passed him by. He then heads with all speed into the smokey air and the peak of the mountain.

Patrols of thirteen abashai each scour the jagged landscape. One group catches sight of Ar'dru, but he has the distance on them. His muscles ache with the effort, but he maintains his lead. When it is fairly obvious that he will reach the summit before they can catch up to him, they break off the chase, and circle back down the slopes.

Ar'dru nears the top of the mountain. Beyond, other dark peaks stretch out into the smogy distance. Then he sees a shaft of red light, spilling from the mountainside. He lands on the wide ledge in front of the cave and strides in.

Within is a vast, but fractured chamber. Steep slopes lead down into a great rift, from which gouts of flame and lava errupt. There are many ledges and shallow caves in the sides of the rift, and within each are gold, gems, and bones. Many of the skulls bear crowns, or the helms of great heroes.

The duthka'gith glides through the rift, seeking the source of the brightest flickering crimson light. Hot gasses blast from the untold depths of the mountain. Ar'du reaches a wide crevasse, and suddenly, a great tornado of flame errupts from the depths. From within the pillar of fire, two great eyes like pools of lava shine. A thunderous, yet feminine, voice shakes the mountain, causing rocks and precious things to clatter down into the rift.

"I am Schakrashaa, brood of Ephelomon. What tribute do you bring, little cousin? What desire drives you? "

Bowing deeply from one knee, though stopping short of prostrating himself (It's the dragons home but they are still family after all!) Ar'dru replies-

"Mighty Schakrashaa of the brood of Ephelomon, I am Saekk-th’Vikch who is known as Ar'dru Cha-rir and I have travelled from the city of Sigil bringing only these unworthy baubles. I regret that I do not have more to spare" Ar'dru lays down jewlery worth 250 gold - all that remains exposed bar a few ear and horn rings. "I humbly request the honor of destroying the head of my slain foe in the infernal fires of my mistress' realm that the creatures very essence might be consumed."

A deep rumbling chuckle shakes the rock. From the pillar of flame emerges the gigantic head and neck of a massive red dragon.

"When I speak of tribute I do not mean such baubles as these, but your gift is accepted nonetheless, little cousin. No, I speak of your conquored foe, for the head of one of the Souless pleases Ephelomon's brood nearly as much as gold. The Pact may have been broken, but a new Alliance arises from the ashes. Bring forth your foe, Ar'dru Cha-rir, for I sense there is much more to your story."
