"I think that Grazz has much to answer for, and many questions to answer. If you are honor-bound to question him, I would be honored to be able to aid you in any in way I can. The second thing is to find him, no easy task by all accounts. The first thing is to decide how we would approach him. I agree that barter, at least to entice him into a meeting, is a worthwhile idea. He has been known in the past for his avarice, the information I bought from him before did not come cheap."

"As for questioning a corpse," he nods toward Jhank'kor, "That can alway be done at the very end, whether we are able to question a living Grazz or not, correct? Necromancy has not been an area of study for me, other that how to put the dead back down."

Du’minh accepts Gy-Nath’s offer with a warm smile, extending his hand to him in acknowledgement.

“The honour is mine to join forces with a great fellow warrior and trustworthy brother, Gy-Nath. Your help is very much appreciated.”

“As to tracking the ‘zerai, I can try the same source by which I have met him previously. I would expect Grazz to be laying low at the moment, however, so it would probably be a challenging objective to accomplish.”

A frown crosses the chal's face. "If he fed the ghaik the last assassin warband's location--the ones who killed Knowledge--then perhaps he will attempt to bargain another deal? Seems they failed the first time, so they'll be more cautious on the second attempt..."

Gy-Nath nods, "More cautious ... perhaps they chose the direct approach because this Zur Khaan was unreachable by more subtle means. Dispite the ancestral failings of their blood, I have found that the githzerai are especially adept at the shadow game. Secrets, riddles, disinformation, intelligence-gathering, thievery, assassination. At these crafts the zerth excell."

"Of course the ghaik have their agents as well, and though there is nothing so abhorrent as someone who willingly deals with the foul ones, there are many more who do thier bidding without ever knowing it."

He gives a penetrating look at each gith in the party in turn, "The most dangerous agent is the one who does not even know he is an agent. The People have fought the Great Enemy for a very long time, however, and have ways of ferreting out those subconciously dominated by the ghaik. First and foremost, no thrall can slay one of their masters' race. I therefore know each of you whom I saw in battle in the Heart of The Void cannot be an illithid spy. There are other, more subtle ways of discovering spies as well. Some will have a mark upon their bodies. Some will always wear an article of clothing of a certain color, which reminds the subconcious mind of it's thralldom. That is why the githzerai wear grey, I am told, to prevent spies in this manner. Some spies may use a particular word or phrase, over and over, or return often to a specific emotion or memory in their minds. These are the hardest to find, because the reminder is internal. Even then, there are certain mental aversions that prevent the ghaik from using some items and memories as a focus for subconcious thralldom. Neither weapons nor armor can be used as a focus, because they remind the warrior of freedom and struggle. Likewise magical items usually remind the bearer of her own power, rather than the power of her masters. There may be something about the magical aura that prevents it as well, I don't know. The stronger the emotion or memory, the easier it is to use as a focus. As you would expect, fear and pain are easiest for the ghaik to worm their tenticles into."

Daraz, who has kept silent throughout the exchange of insults between the githyanki of the group in order to avoid the appearance of taking a side in the dispute.

"Grazz hurts us often, but he also hurts the Ghaiks. Our intrests would be well served by finding some way to keep aware of his plans. That way, the next time The Accursed engineers a situation like this one, we will have an advantage over the ilthilids and we might win a descisive victory by being well prepared, or at least we can get the longer end of the stick. Again, I stress that Grazz is potentially useful to our cause alive if we can stay well informed of his plans."

Crooking his eyebrow at the alternative suggested, Jhank'kor peers at Daraz, "And how do you suggest doing so, Daraz...

"Tapping the mind like a ghaik?"

A dangerous gleam flashes across Jhank'kor's onyx irises.

That's right. Onyx. Eye-wink

He's merely reacting to his previous disdain for Grazz...so no worries about him going postal on anyone.

Ar'dru listens intently to the conversation but keeps his own council. He recognises the need to use subtle tactics on occasion but dislikes the somewhat 'dishonourable' feel they have about them. He focusses on absorbing as much information about his companions as he can as they discuss options.

The Rish takes mental notes of all the information divulged.

“Your recollections of marks of ghaik thralldom will be kept in mind, Gy-Nath. There is always cause to be wary of spies, especially in Git’riban, and especially now when the empire has been plunged into an age of darkness…”

As Daraz delivers his latest line of thought, Du’minh peers curiously at him with a hint of suspicion.

“An interesting choice of words, Daraz… Premonitions are a rare gift, wouldn’t you agree? Do tell more of how we will achieve this task you propose and how it relates to ghaik methods.”

"I agree that having an informer close to Grazz would be most desirable, but we have to face the fact that if it were that easy, better players in the shadow game than us would have already done so. Grazz is slick, and we are but a pseudo-warband, though cutters all from what I saw in The Heart. Besides, there is a time aspect, and the most damage can be done to Illithid House right now, before Sight and Knowledge are replaced.

It may be risky, but cornering him and demanding the truth may be our only real option. There are ways of telling if he lies, so long as he is not more powerful of a Psion than I. I have not heard tales of his Psi-ability, but often of his blade, so I believe I would prove the stronger mind."

"I meant that only as a statement to prove the value of some more inteligence. I am no more able to see the future than a brick wall," says Daraz to Ar'dru

Du’minh takes a long look at Daraz and considers prodding the subject a bit further, when his eyes light up with new considerations to establishing a plan:

“I may have an idea for evening the odds in relation to Grazz, though it regrettably involves dealing with more Zerths. I figure that Zur Khaan would be non too pleased to discover that a kinsman is responsible for directing an assassination attempt on him and his followers. If that ‘zerai poses as Zerthimon himself, he would likely not be on the best of terms already in relation to a renowned traitor to their realms on Limbo.”

“If our initial efforts to track down Grazz directly are in vain, we could go by means of Zur Khaan. I am sure a message subtly delivered to the githzerais sitting below in the hall of the inn would find itself to him, considering how the silverchain-wielding patron where part of his band at the time of the attack.”

“The Sharpshadows have their own internal conflicts - we should consider playing them against each other to our advantage.”

Ar'Dru nods at Du’minh, once again clicking his nails against his chin "That strategy shows promise, setting a thief to catch a thief, but how will we gain access to Grazz if the Zerai simply track and kill him? Or keep his intelligence for themselves? We need an agent in the group, or at least someone to trail the trackers. I would be honoured to volunteer for the duty but I'm afraid I may be somewhat conspicuous." Ar'dru gives a wry smile and spreads his wings slightly for emphasis.

“At any rate, I think we should seek to corner Grazz by more “conventional” approaches first. If this fails – say if a day’s worth of hunting turns up fruitless, we can make contact to Zur Khaan’s disciples to use him as an enemy of our enemy.”

Du’minh takes a long telling glance from Gy-Nath to Trias, letting his sight wander to the pouch where the severed ulitharid head is carried.

“Of course, we already have a source of information that we have yet to take advantage of. I think it is high time to level fully within this unconventional band of ours.”

Sorry for the delay, I'll be back to regular posting in less than a week!

Rey'arteb takes it all in with great interest, and hopes Grazz caught all of it in the adjacent room. Throughout the exchange, he appears to be in deep thought, as if concentrating on his spell.

This is why he coyly gives no answer to the Jhank'kor.

As if coming out of a trance (though only for show) his eyes suddenly meet Du'minh's. I agree with Du'minh - let us use the conventional means before resorting to stealth.

He removes the ulitharid head from his personal inventory and casually holds it to the side as he makes his next proposition.

But at the same time, it is true that sometimes it is necessary to deal with the Zerai in stealth - If we do come to that, I request that I be the double agent. After all, my appearance is quite ambiguous- and with a few... adjustments I think I can make a convincing Zerai.

Then looking at Ar'Dru with the humblest of acknowledgments.

That is, of course, if no one else has objections.

Oh, and what shall we ask of this

He holds the head up, though with a fitting degree of irreverence.

Unless his understanding of the Grey Enemy isn't so astute (though they are his single-most concentrated foe)...

Jhank'kor straights and then leans toward the bloated visage, admiring the scorch marks of acid and the rents from harmonics. Smiling contendedly at his accomplishment, the chal turns his midnight gaze to Vivec. "Ask the freak where the elder brain lurks...let's cut these vermin in their hearts."

Ar'dru shrugs, "I had thought that Daraz, yourself or the chal would have been suitable for the duty. I am happy to follow by air at a distance if you wish to have back-up." smiling grimly he turns to the head "I suggest that we ask about the access points and escape routes from the ghaik's lair as well as what defences to expect. I am also interested in hearing what connections the ghaik have to their new allies, these 'Tsochar' as well as what Sight knew of Grazz."

[DMing : Sense Motive and Bluff checks are no substitute for good roleplaying. As for my DM rulings on them: Jhank'kor knows Vivec wasn't really casting a spell, but that's about it. J and Ar'dru have every reason to mistrust Vivec, but then again they always did. He DID come back with the head though, as promised.

From reading the spell description from the Players Handbook, Rey's speak with dead will allow him to ask 3 questions (his caster level) but they needn't be yes/no questions. BTW there is some risk involved. The head gets a will save.]

Gy looks at Jhank'kor, "I like your enthusiasm, warlock. Knowing the ghaiks' portals can lead us to dozens of the foul pools, if not hundreds. I have it on fairly good authority that Sigil itself does not support one of the abominations, hence the illithids' need for a triad to run Illithid House."

I am also interested in hearing what connections the ghaik have to their new allies, these 'Tsochar' as well as what Sight knew of Grazz.

"From what I learned in my ... dealings with the worms, there are competing sects of tsochar, some allied to the the illithid in a mercinary fashion, though I use the term very loosely in this case. The tsochar are master infiltrators, and since the People are unfamiliar with the foul parasites, they are able to go where illithid spies cannot. Some of their alien goals and stategems also coincide from time to time, also true of the aboleth." There is an involuntary shudder.

Considering his Spellcraft and Knowledge (arcana) mods, I would think Du’minh to easily see that Rey was not casting any spells, and thus the Rish has also grown slightly suspicious. However, Rey might as well have simply been in plain meditation, in some mystic trance or some such, so I see no reason for Du’minh to follow up on the issue further.

The Rish-i-Chal sizes up the assembled party and listens to what has been proposed, as well as providing his own thoughts.

“I have a similar question in mind, though my suggested wording is:
How can we successfully penetrate and assault the primary sanctuary of Illithid House with least resistance?

I would think such a choice of words might give us directions to the core of their operations, and provide instructions for how to bypass as many of their safeguards, traps, and guardians, as possible. Further, the question pertains to a successful plan from the perspective of a githyanki warband, specifically.”

“I would second the proposed question of asking what dealings Grazz has had with the ghaiks, though based on what we know I would say the tsochar connection is of lower priority, should we find ourselves short of questions. Vivec, this spell is well-known to me, as is the fact that its potency is keyed to the channeler of the dead spirit. How many answers can you procure?”

“Agreed. My current guess is that Grazz may have tricked the ghaiks into biting on more than they can chew (or extract, as the case may be), as I elaborated on earlier, but that remains a hypothesis to be tested.

Du’minh cocks an eyebrow at Gy-Nath’s recounts, taking a long moment to consider his words before replying.

“I know of your band and the recent declaration of your leader, Gy-Nath. Ali-Gorthifsha-N'kahl is a worthy conquerer of worlds, deserving of great respect unlike many warlords before her, but in this issue I cannot agree with her.”

“I know of warriors from the Band of Iron, I have stood with them on the decks of mighty warships as we laid siege to the worlds of lesser races. If their hearts have remained true, they will not have joined in her oath despite what reverence she is held in. I find solace in the fact that the same is true for you, brother. The mind flayers are a plague to be eradicated, they are always the priority. Even so, warriors of Gith with a soul as strong as their blade know that there are other hatreds that must not be forgotten. That is the way of the People.”

Elder brains exist partially in the astral right? Knowing Sigil's connection with the plane I think that having an elder brain in Sigil may have some dificulties. In any case, I'm no expert on planar lore and I could well be wrong.

"Indeed. Astral travel is the only way the great bulk of an elder brain may travel at all under its own power. That is why our mother Gith conquored the Astral and forged the first silver swords, to deny them easy use of the thoroughfare."

"I seriously doubt that a gigantic pool being carried by dozens of heavy thralls through a portal wide enough to accomidate it would have escaped the notice of both the People and the Zerth. Hence I tend to believe reports that Sigil does not house an elder brain, and that the triad of Illithid House rule the ghaik here. "

"I confronted Zur Khaan and his disciples, half expecting to be attacked, and indeed his followers would have drawn steel against me had he not stopped them. Though aware of the differances between githyanki and githzerai, he still treated me, and all others, as simply gith. He spoke the ancient form of our language, and though I am of course not too familiar with the Unbroken Circle, his cryptic words reminded me much of the Zerths' holy scriptures. His primary focus was the eradication of the illithid, and the need for strength of body and mind."

"He also said that to have the best chance of defeating them once and for all, the People have but two paths. To destroy our enemies we can seek to become like them, to know their minds by becoming as foul and hateful as they. Or we may become their antithesis, to become all that they are not nor can become. Whereas they pool their thoughts, we should isolate ours. As they enslave so should we seek to free all bondage. Keep others from bondage, and even remove the bondage we place on ourselves. I met with him for about twenty minutes or so. I had to leave ... he was ... starting to make sense." Gy-Nath hangs his head with his personal shame of starting to heed the words of the Zerth of Zerths.

Rey'arteb, still sitting, steals a curious glance towards Gy-Nath. He knew Daraz to be a Zerai, but he wouldn't be too surprised if this one was as well.

He furrows his angular brows and stares intently at the head...

No more than three answers will I receive per questioning. And yes, the questioning is only as potent as the asker. I am not too advanced in this sorcery- so there is the possibility that answers will not be forthcoming. Or worse- inaccurate.

Then, in a subdued tone, so as not to interrupt Gy-Nath, or other conversations, he asks himself as much as anyone else:

the location of the elder brain, and how best to assault the House ... that leaves one more

Head up, he takes a sweeping look at everyone in the room.

I feel as if we're missing some important detail. Is there anything else I should ask before resorting to seeking information about the 'Tsochar' or Grazz?

Du’minh is visibly troubled by Gy-Nath’s words, seeking to banish any hints of githzerai propaganda.

“The Zerth’s resolve to vanquish the ghaiks is commendable, but do not be fooled by his simplification that the People have “only two paths to choose between”. These are the two options I see: Either Zur Khaan believes himself to be Zerthimon, or he is a deliberate imposter. What is worse? The grand traitor who sunders his own people and thus saves the illithids from extinction, or the simple traitor who partakes in a petty masquerade to pose as something he is not. It matters not - you should not trust him, whatever the case may be.”

“But from what you recount, it would seem he is an impressively persuasive speaker, perhaps even able to sway the most single-minded of warriors. Presuming he is the slayer of Knowledge, that would make him an even more dangerous man to count as your foe, and we would likely do best to avoid him for now.”

Head up, he takes a sweeping look at everyone in the room.

I feel as if we're missing some important detail. Is there anything else I should ask before resorting to seeking information about the 'Tsochar' or Grazz?

“Grazz is an important detail – if we are about to confront one of the most dangerous individuals in Git’riban, we should at least try to assert whether he is in league with the Great Enemy. I still say we ask Sight of what deals the Zerth has had with the mind flayers.”

"If you can only ask three questions, it might be best not to waste one inquiring about an elder brain in Sigil. There is every indication that none reside in Sigil, and no indications to the contrary. I agree it would be best for you ask about Grazz, and about assaulting Illithid House (though I imagine you will have to word that one carefully). Asking what the Illithid know about Zur Khaan, or even about the disappearance of Vlaakith, might prove profitable as well."

[OOC - sloooowed down. I assume some of y'all are headed back to school (as am I .... sort of), so don't fret too much, but I WOULD like to know you guys're still with me.]

Daraz nods in agreement with Gy-Nath.

OOC: Yeah, my game has slowed down too. School is a royal pain in the a- (and it starts tomorow for me).

Jhank'kor grimaces at the notion of overlooking the question of the Elder brain, the fires of hatred banking into frustration within his onyx orbs. "If we are to leave off the Great Enemy's heart, then let us focus on this Zerai traitor...I'd be more than happy to see his husk bloated and burnt in the Void by next antipeak."

Otherwise the chal gives little word into the rhetoric, finding ill-ease at Gy'Nath's revelation. Guarding his mind, the warlock whispers in the recesses of his soul. Shall we have to slay the broken blades from among us or will they be reforged? He notices the viscid contact of the bandage on his forehead and winces in disgust. Gith, reforge your kin!

All private monologue, (hopefully) well-concealed from even the psychic's probing thoughts. Eye-wink

Cautious of Jhank'kor's anger, Daraz responds: "As far as I see it, we do not have the ability to bring down the elder brain ourselves and if we tell all of Git'raban, the ghaiks will find out somehow and just pack up leave. This isn't the Astral, there aren't true warbands here--it's not easy to organize a group of sufficient sive without being noticed by someone. If there is an elder brain in Sigil other Ghaiks will know too and we can 'ask' them."

Ar'dru nods at the lines of questioning proposed. "We are better off taking the gift of Illithid house as given rather than chasing dreams, however glorious those dreams may be. Besides I'll wager that we will find more information regarding the Ghiaks leaders as we tear their den apart and there will be many more corpses to question once we are done there."

Not ignorant to tactical thinking, Jhank'kor nods and returns his gaze to Vivec. "That settles much of the banter--are you ready to commense your lore?"

Du’minh waits for the spell to proceed, hoping his words have had some effect on Gy-Nath’s perspective on Zur Khaan.

“Yes, it seems we have reached agreement on how to weigh our choices, then. Initiate the ritual when you are ready, Vivec.

OOC: I guess that's my cue. My first week of school, as I'm sure is the case with everyone who's starting or has started school, has been hectic. Just so everyone knows, I can post like a maniac on weekends.

Rey'arteb places a blank parchment roll and pen upon the nearest table - in case his companions decide to change their mind about the questions to ask.
Then, without further ado, holds the disembodied head in his right hand and begins the esoteric incantations and the subtle, complex movements (with his left hand) required by the casting of the spell. In order to keep up his facade, he plans to first ask about Grazz, though he secretly resents wasting a question.

His voice is somehow different as he asks; it is recognizably emitted from his voicebox, though the tone and inflection is completely foreign to those who have heard him speak before:

Tell me everything you know of Grazz the Accursed, pertinent to his dealings with you and your kind, as well as any obvious weaknesses and effective ways to capture or subdue him.

Azure, If you are going to count this as more than one question, then I'd like to reword it so that I only ask about Grazz's dealings with the ghaik.

Vivec casts his spell, and the ulitharid head flops twice then spings to life! At first it goes wild, thrashing around and whipping the six-foot tenticles at the gathered gith. Then it looks into Vivec's eyes and goes limp, staring and hissing. The three crystal orbs of its 'eyes', which were dead and dark before, now glow again with a faint light.

Something else is strange. Coincidently, the moment the ulitharid head springs to 'life', a muffled shout is heard from the next room. [DC 16 to understand what was shouted]

"Ssssh. Yess ... Massster," The head hisses. The voice is full of hate and rage. There is something wrong, and Rey knows it. The spell is only supposed to call upon residual knowledge in the body, a being's spirit (if the illithid even HAVE souls) is not actually recalled, but he can feel Sight's malevolance eminating, not from the physical head, but from the three stones in it.

"Ssss Grazz ... Accurssst. Githzerai from Ssigil. A minor ssspy who hass ssometimess made dealss with the Houssse. Sssold itemss, ssecretssss, and sslavess. I sssusspect he also ssells his sservices to the githss as well. A ssstreet thief and ssurvivalissst from the Hive Ward, he isss a ssimple profiteer. A minor pawn in the Ssshadow Game, jusst valuable enough to keep in sservice. Hiss contactss with the House were through a ssslaver of the Red Armada, a human known as Emir Rouge."

"Knowledge reportss him to be a fair bladessman but not a ssspellcasster. He wearss an amulet that protectss him from Psionicss, among other protective itemss. He iss currently in the next room. Effective meanss of capture or subdual hinge on immediate action, for he iss now fumbling with the lock on hiss door. Obvious weaknessess are that he iss alone and sseemingly paniced."

Jhank'kor's face blanches at the re-awakened soul. Whirling toward the wall where the shout originated, realizing by Sight's knowledge who it was, the warlock releases his primal fury in a wave of cinders. "LITHID LOVER!"

[Wait ... Ben, is Jhank'kor seriously casting a fireball at a wall 5' away in a 10' x 15' room in hopes of burning the wall down? Because I'll have let the Evil DM out if you do.]

Um, excuse you, you're not the only clandestine githzerai in the party with improved initiative and levels in rogue ;D

Rey'arteb holds up his free hand in an attempt to calm any stirring in the room.

It Lies! I can sense it! Rey'arteb retorts, trying to sound as confident and unconvinced as possible.

He then focuses on the head with a malevolence and hatred of his own:Do not make a mockery of me!!!! You think me a fool?! I have methods of tormenting you from beyond the grave, Slime! You will answer my questions truthfully, or you shall never know peace...EVER!!!

The usually calming, perhaps even altruistic persona known as Vivec has never sounded so harsh before... and so different.

How am I too effectively assault and destroy your House in the most efficient manner with the least amount of danger and loss, what are the most exploitable weaknesses?
