Sorry, I should clarify: I think the problem's in that code. Given the erratic nature of the error, though, I can't swear for sure.

[Further tests indicate that the preview doesn't kick in if you don't add new text. I'm trying more fun stuff to see what I can do to make things all breaky and stuff.]

[Double carriage returns? Don't seem to work. So I don't know :)]

testing multiple views of previewing:
worked once
twice
thrice and fourth. *headscratch*

Clear your caches for any javascripts still being clung to by IE maybe? I don't know why it would hang on to it but it's the only thing I can think of.

Doesn't work with my Opera 7.54 either. This is bizarre...

...although the massive area of dead space between the comment area and the previous posts that my IE has doesn't exist in Opera.

So - just to make sure I understand what the problem is:

1) You are seeing hte preview window at the top (with your name, icon and all that to the right).

2) There's just - at seeming random - no actual TEXT in the message area?

Right?

I'd been thinking you weren't even seeing the preview window at all.

Yep. Everything's there but the actual previewed message; I get "Posted: Subject:" up top and that's it. This is stable across both my browsers so something real is going on here. As for my earlier claim about repeatability... not so much. Preview's worked a grand total of three times for me of the literally 50 or so times I've tried in the past hour.

[Ok. Suitably odd. I can't get it to happen with my own posts. But i can edit one of yours and make it happen all the time. Even when I add something such as this comment to your post. Hm. Maybe it's something account specific...]

Ok. I made a small tweak. Is it still doing it?

It seems to be fine, now.

Ok. Looks like for some reason it was dying on an attempt to allow HTML in the post. In my settings I have that turned off. I noticed you folks had it turned on. So I poked that bit of code - and made a change that... realisticly - shouldn't have actually *changed* anything. But it actually did? I'm sacrificing a virgin Snicker's bar to the coding gods tonight.

Dare I ask how you know the Snickers bar hasn't yet gone all the way?

[Oh, right: it works now. Hooray!]

That works too.
