I'm wondering if there's some sort of deeper meaning behind the names of the various fiends?
My main thought is for Yugoloths as all the Yugoloth caste names end in "loth". It is kind of fitting given the Loth hierarchy, and I'm thinking along the lines of the Scottich "Mc" or "Mac" and the prevalent "son" suffix for many western surnames, it would be interesting to see if the same thing could apply to the Yugoloths in particular. Perhaps the word "loth" has a deeper meaning in the language of the Baern?
I mean not even the Gehreleths have this naming standard (of sorts) and they all owe their existence to Apomps.
It doesn't really seem to apply as much to Baatezu and Tanar-ri. There is the fairly common "zu" suffix but it is not exclusive to either race.
However it is still an interesting exercise to see if the naming schemes for the fiends follow any sort of pattern or whether they have any deeper meaning. If there isn't any canon reasoning behind these names perhaps it would be fun to have a play around with them?
Actualy naming conventions for Yugoloths and Baatezu (at least for first ones) is preety simple: it is just broken Latin, Greek and English with warious sufixes.
For example: Baatezu= Battor + zu, vould probbably mean "Battorian devils"
Here is some more examples for Baatezu names:
Cornugons= Cornu (that means Horn) so name is Horned Devil
Osiluth= Is probably comming from word Osteo (as in osteoporosis), so we get bone devils.
Barbazu= came from word Barb, wich sugests their barberd beards.
Erinyes= that is easy one, Erinyes or furies are lesser godesses of vengance.
Yugoloths names are even easier: just latin words + loth suffix.
Example: Hydroloth= Hydro (water) + loth= water yugoloth. Duh.
As of Geherleths I think that word comes from corpted names for Gehena and Yugoloths. So I thing that name Gehre (Gehena) is suggesting the plane on wich race is first created and -Leth is probbably comes from -loth but I gusee that it also signals superiority (as you know Apomps is still convinced that his creations are superior). So I guess that Gereheths origianted on Gehena but when they were exiled on Carcery, I guess they picked plane's chaotic trait.
But this is purely my speculation.
