Entry Feedback: Polls

Hey all, I've been taking a look at our entries lately and noticed a trend. While people seem to enjoy responding to them in posts (note - we now have BBCode enabled on those!) on average for a poll rating we get maybe one vote on it?

I was curious why that is...

I like polls. Keep 'em going. It's also valuable feedback for writers who want to improve their ideas or writing style.

It would be nice to be able to log in once to both the forums and the site, though.

If you've set yourself to be auto logged in at the forums it logs you to the website too. I'm still working on matching temp logins on both sides.

Personally, I think it's a useless tool. The voting system is opinion-oriented, just as are the comments, but there's no explanation given for why someone feels the way they do about a particular piece. For instance, if someone receives a one on their piece, how does that help the writer improve if there's no comment to tell what was wrong with it?

I can see how that's definately a worry - politeness and some of hte more archaic rules of net-equette would say if you have an extreme opinion (a 5 or a 1) that you include a comment indicating why. That's one of the reasons why I didn't roll out polls till we have comments to go with it. But not everyone follows that one unfortunately.

Which is why I think the voting system is a bad idea. By allowing someone to vote without posting a comment, you allow them to affect the overall score of opinion without explaining why. In that manner, someone who just absolutely dislikes someone's style can work to make it appear as if all of those who voted have a lower opinion than what otherwise may be true.

I'm not sure what you mean. It would be that way if someone could vote more than once per item yes - it someone repeatedly hits 1 then it's definately a problem... but it's not set up that way. Not liking someone's work is a legitmate reason to vote 1 - but if many people are voting then it will become clear that that the over all opinion is much higher than a 1 - right? (Hence why I'm wanting to get more people to vote...)

In order to encourage people to participate and explain why they feel the way they do, the two options should be tied together.

...and if they can't vote anonymously, most people won't vote at all. Very few people have the time or energy to leave comments, but they will mark a quick vote.

Anonymous voting is the mark of public opinion (of those who visit PW). If you absolutely must have comments, post your article in the Creative section instead and see what happens.
