The shimmery thing in the background is an eolian, which is an erdeen's air elemental equivalent. It is not the star of this sketch because it needs a lot of work; it's also very hard to make a sentient heat shimmer look interesting.

Me too, though from a technical standpoint (as in craming all the illustrations into the pdf release), having the eolian (and/or other chaomentals) in the background would probably be a better idea (so, I vote for #1, concept-wise).
I like the first one the best. I think that it fits the description the best.
