In Lords of Madness, they describe the Elder Evils as either having created the Far Realm or in some way having enabled its existence. My gut reaction is to disagree and posit that the Elder Evils sprang from the Far Realm. What are your thoughts?
Elder Evils' Creation of the Far Realm?
Well, "Elder Evil" is just a name chosen by mortals. It doesn't necessarily refer to their actual alignments. They could all be beyond alignment in a Far Reamish way - mortals refer to them as evil because they don't understand them.
I agree that the Far Realm should definitely not be "evil" and that the Elder Evils are not even necessarily evil. However, I suppose I should have made it more clear that my question was whether an entity or a set of entities such as the Elder Evils or beings of similar power could conceivably create something like the Far Realm, and if so, how? Also, where would these entities have come from? Thanks!
Well, a whole book on the Elder Evils is being released this month, so hopefully it will clear up any questions. Since it supposedly will include stats for the Elder Evils, I wonder how powerful they will be...?
Those aren't the same Elder Evils that were described in Lords of Madness, but just a catch-all term that includes many different sorts of Big Bads. For example, there's an obyrith, a sentient planet, and a Worm That Walks.
1. Maybe they secreted it from their bodies, dripping spatial dimensions like sweat. Maybe they wove it like spider silk. Maybe they dreamed it into existence, their thoughts becoming alien realities. Maybe they injected it into the spaces between the planes like scorpion venom, and reality swelled up and became necrotic, and this is what we call the Far Realm. Maybe they radiated a force that gave cancer to space and time, a spreading, malignant growth in the fabric of all that is, and this is what the Far Realm really is.
2. Maybe they come from the Great Wheel cosmology before anything else was there. Perhaps they floated in the empty void with the draedens before the formation of the Inner or Outer Planes. Or perhaps they came from a parallel cosmology, or the Ordial Plane, or a kind of plane that nothing is known about. Perhaps they dreamt themselves into existence at the same time they dreamt the Far Realm, weaving and dripping and growing simultaneously with their creation. Perhaps as they created the Far Realm, the Far Realm created them.
I really like those ideas. Thanks so much!
I personally use the far real as the space between this multiverse and others, some really strange, some hardly different (leaving the big scary dudes out of it's creation). I think of it as sort of the astral plane for multiverses.
Yeah, I use that idea too, I'm rather partial to it.
I personally dislike the idea of the far realms being inherently evil or tied to evil. I think they are so alien and incomprehensible they hurt this reality, but ours does the same to them. That said, if you want the to be tied to the far realm, it makes much more sense that they come from it rather than built it, so yes, I personally wouldn't but if I did, I'd do it your way.
