I'm looking over some of the countries, and most of them seem to be able to replace alot of the planes. Like... America could be the Outlands, New York Sigil... the countries with vikings and the British Kingdom Ysgard, the Beastlands Africa, and (no offense to anyone living there) Iraq would qualify by game standards as Acheron. Any thoughts on it?
Earth vs The Multiverse
An interesting thought. Realize that MOST fantasy settings are based on real earth mythology. Elysium, Muspelheim, Gehenna, Limbo, etc. These and many more planes and layers have names and environments scooped right out of our very own mythology.
With that being said. This topic doesn't really belong in this subforum so much as the main planescape one.
Agreed - this does seem more like a general PS question than one for the UPS setting. Moving it along... thread has been moved from Urban Planescape to RPG Discussion.
I think that there's some truth in the premise, but you may be missing the point of the planes. They aren't places, they're ideas.
The Outlands embodies the three concepts of concordance, conflict, and neutrality -- that could represent the US, but no more than it represents most nation-states.
Sigil is New York, but it is also Shanghai, London, and every other city, as well as a metaphor for the unknown.
Ysgard is based on Asgard the "heaven" from Norse myth, but it isn't terribly representative of Scandenavia itself -- especially not the region as it is today. It's more representative of the concept of action without consequences.
The Beastslands is not Africa, nor is it terribly close. I'm honestly not sure where the connection is besides the fact that the Beastlands are full of animals and Africa is known for its strange (to non-Africans) wildlife. Besides, Africa is simply too big and diverse a place to be defined by a single plane.
Iraq does bear similaries to Acheron (at least from the perspective of one looking in from outside), but no more than any other war zone does. Acheron represents the horrors of war, so any horrible war (and I challenge you to find a war that isn't) is going to bear a certain resemblance.
America is clearly Baator, although Bush isn't anywhere near as competent a leader as Asmodeus...
[mod]Don't take the thread in a political direction or I will shut it down. Please review our forum rules if you need to.[/mod]
Sorry, my bad...
[mod]No problem. It's just worthy of a gentle prod in the right direction at times... [/mod]
Being prodded to the right direction by some clueless cutter(ess) , priceless.
We had one in switzerland, once in the middle ages. Was a civil war. Well, someone was killed and they took that as an occasion to stop.
Might be some kind of urban legend though, since the swiss were also the greatest mercenaries of all europe in the middle ages and fought in almost every war, often on both sides.
Wow. The Swiss are yugoloths?
Pants of the North!
Hmmm... Poland would definetely be something like Dis in Baator.
I don't think the Swiss are our equivalent of Yugoloths! I'd tell you who IS, but I'm already in trouble here for spouting political screed, so I'd best sod off... There are, however, plenty of mercenary armies in the world that would apply, some of them corporate-owned...
Not even sure it belongs in this topic.
