Dream Harvesting

Somehow I came up with this idea at work while seeing something that said "Make money while you sleep" so then I thought about some place where the energy from dreamers is harnessed towards something. Maybe they were there willingly or unwillingly with their dreams feeding something from the Plane/Region of Dreams.

This scenario could go a couple ways like the Matrix with their being pods of dreamers kept clueless of the situation, or something like the confusing Italian post-apocalyptic/porn comic Druuna whose plot I never have actually understood.

It's given me a thought that it could also be a way to work the Quori/Inspired and Kalashtar into things somewhere outside of Eberron.

But anyways I'd like some more ideas on how something with a mass of dreamers gathered together could work and what it could do on the planes and the rest of the multiverse.

Do a quick Google search on Plugin Not Found.

Okay, so Wikipedia presents a bit of a read, but I'm thinking that a clear understanding of what dreams are, or are thought to represent, could help inspire ideas. For example, the comic book Plugin Not Found by Neil Gaiman has a lot of material about dreams, drawn from tons of resources. The one thing that I took away from the series, above everything else, is that dreams are an integral part of the human experience. They embody hope, storytelling, fears, desires, and a myriad other concepts.

Let's take hope. Gaiman writes about Hell in Sandman; he says it's a place where the Fallen and the despired of the universe dream of a better life. If they had no dreams, they'd have no hope; if they had no hope, they'd realize that Hell is the best they'll ever get; if that happened, they'd rebel against Satan, and while the Morningstar is powerful, an infinite horde of demons just might give him some trouble. So Satan needs dreams, and hope, in order to keep his demons in line. Similarly, without hope, man loses his ability to aspire to a better life.

Perhaps there's a connection between Limbo (or another suitable plane, including the Dreaming) and dreams. Perhaps the Fated have conspired with the Godsmen to create a machine that can harness the energy of dreams. This gives them nearly unlimited power and potential to create whatever they want. Naturally, the Godsmen use it to further their advancement to godhood (or something similar), while the Fated fall to fighting among themselves, and with the Godsmen, for personal control of the machine. In the meantime, millions or billions of Primes find their basic motivation sapped from them. Or perhaps Planars across the 'verse are losing their hope, and thousands start flocking to the Bleaker cause.

Re: Dream Harvesting

The reasons I can think of there being on why some force would harvest dreams is because of the power involved with shaping worlds and beings into existence. If such power can be harnessed through something so simple as dreaming which presumably every sentient being is capable of, then with the right way of directing that energy the power can be used for many purposes.

Though many worlds/demi-planes are created by dreamers all the time, it might be someone's purpose to create a new fully fledged plane by using these dreamers they gathered together. From the more they dream the bigger the plane becomes, until some threshold is pushed and the plane becomes stable. The reasons for doing this could be to replace another plane, or as an experiment, or for some sinister purpose like establishing a beachhead on the Multiverse to invade it. That last point leads to the next point.

Since beings can be created by dreamers, and it's very likely that the Quori themselves are possibly the creation of one very powerful dreamer, then another purpose would be to use the dreamers to create an army. Usually the problem of such an army is that it could only exist in a world created by dreamers, but anyone who could direct dreamers into building an army could find a way for their creations to last outside that world. Maybe they're permanent, but with an army of dream-spawned shock-troops they only need to last a few hours outside the world they were created in.

And the final thought relating to the Quori, is that maybe Quori are not well-known across the planes because they are only dreams of a very powerful ancient sleeping somewhere in Eberron like one of the Rakshasa Rajahs or a Dragon sealed away since they're Age of Demons. And from where they are in Dal Quor they aim to expand their reach. Already the Quori have the ability to one particular world based on them psionicly influencing people on Eberron, and building the nation of Riedra centred around themselves as the Inspired. But rather than just relying on that one theorized dreamer, they decide to have they're Inspired vessels planewalk across the multiverse, and start collecting dreamers for their plan of expanding Dal Quor and keeping the Age of the Dreaming Dark. In some cases they're plans may backfire on one captured dreamer, and that dreamer may escape or become self-aware working against their plans. They may either create a rebel Quori who's opposed to their plans spawning a new line of Kalashtar across the planes, or that dreamer who awakes may somehow become a Kalashtar themselves.

Re: Dream Harvesting

Following this line of thought--invading force intent on creating a permanent foothold in the cosmos--who are they targeting? How many do they target? Are there more or less powerful dreamers? Are the imprisoned powers/entities capable of dreaming?

Do they target large numbers of primes? They could sweep into a Prime world and put all its mortals to sleep; perhaps an entire world sleeps for a hundred, a thousand, a million years, only to awaken and find that the wilderness has taken over, but they are unharmed. Or maybe a lot of people died, and the world is wild once more, and only a few survived (the people died because of the wild creatures, not because of age or lack of food; they would have lived if the house hadn't collapsed, for example). That's a campaign setting in-and-of itself.

Are there powerful dreamers? Could the Quori target a power? Perhaps an entire pantheon "disappears" because they've fallen asleep, and their dreams are used to power whatever dream-catching machine is working its madness. Because the pantheon is asleep, they start to lose their connection to mortals, meaning followers slowly lose their spells and powers. Maybe this is how older pantheons died, giving way to the death of gods. Maybe the Quori (or other dreaming race) is much more ancient than we thought, and they've been draining energy from gods for a long time. This is bad for gods, because it's a constant threat against their existence; but it's good, because it opens vast fields of mortal worship.

Finally, what if the dreamer race is looking for a strong link to a sleeping/imprisoned power, like Tharizdun or one of the Old Ones? Cthuhlu sleeps beneath the world, or so the legends say; what if his dreams power the dreaming machine, enabling the creation of new worlds? When Cthuhlu wakes, the power cuts out. What if Cthuhlu is banished from this universe? What if he's killed? The above two ideas help to create settings and plots that work well with heroic characters. Legendary or epic-style play comes from this idea: Cthuhlu (or Thariszdun) is actually the source of creation, and when he wakes (or disappears), it starts a chain-reaction that threatens to destroy the 'verse, not because of any act of destruction, but because of an act of omission.

Re: Dream Harvesting

Pretty sure plenty of creatures in the Dreamscapes (there's more than one, including the Nightmare Lands/Demiplane of Dread, The Shallows, Dal Quor, etc.) already feed on dreams and nightmares, including the Quori themselves IIRC. I do not recall if it is covered in Jade Dragons & Hungry Ghosts or not, but the Japanese/E. Asian and SE Asian Baku is a benevolent creature that "eats" the bad dreams of mortals.

Just one thing to bear in mind about dreamscapes of course-- Elementals, constructs, and oozes *also a few species of aberration* cannot normally enter them, as they lack brains. Supernatural means are required for these creature types to enter one, thus save special types (like say, a dream pseudoelemental or something like that), they will be exceedingly rare in the lands of dreams save as "nightmares" created by dreamers. (for elementals, possession of a fleshling is one way to enter a dream, and there is more than one method for doing this, such as special types of elemental binding to the head or torso *as per Magic of Eberron*, one involving a special ritual that blends the personality and consciousness of the host and the elemental.)
