Cleric without deity?

Is this anyhow possible, or are clerical powers only granted thru divine entities?

Yep, this is very possible. In fact this is possible even *without* Planescape if you check the PHB, it's one of the options in the 3rd ed version of the game, that I think is still there in 3.5 - a cleric of an abstract concept.

For a more planescapy answer, there's also the Athar who get their divine spells from someplace other than Gods, and the Ciphers who get their nifties from the Cadence. There's Lothar, a cleric of the concept of Death from what I understand in Sigil as well.

Or Doomguard clerics of Entropy, or Fated clerics of Fate, or druids who worship only the elements or the life-death-rebirth cycle, or worshippers of the ideal of Humanity or Love or Mount Celestia or Elysium or Baator.

I find Cleric to be an ideal class for a factioneer. If you overlook the unfortunate emphasis on battling undead and channeling positive/negative energy, just customize with the perfect pair of domains (they're coming out with new domains all the time, so it's easy to find the right ones), and you can set yourself up with a combat capable spellcaster whose spells perfectly reflect the faction philosophy. A Cipher Cleric of the Cadence, for example, could do quite well with the Celerity domain from Complete Divine, or the Fate domain from Complete Warrior.

I find that the alternative cleric is one more reason to enjoy Planescape, since they fit so well in the setting and it seems that DMs would be more likely to allow them. In most D&D games (in other settings of course), clerics must be tied to a god if only because DMs feel that it fits in with the setting. It would be a nice change to play a PS cleric of a concept and to use that concept strongly in the character's background and conduct. It might even be more personal than the connection to a diety.

Yeah I don't like the emphasis on undead turning ect. either. I really wish there were options.

Any ideas?

Unearthed Arcana lets clerics trade in their Turn Undead abilties for Smite Evil like Paladins do (or Smite Good, if they rebuke undead).

There are also feats that require the expenditure of Turn Undead uses in order to function, and do things like adding your Cha to a melee damage roll or granting your allies energy resistance.

Unearthed Arcana, not Urban Arcana... silly me...

I know that the elemental domains give the ability to turn specific types of outsiders (namely, outsiders of the opposing element). I could swear I read somewhere that there's something that allows clerics to turn other types of outsiders (I think devils/demons), but I can't remember well...
