I'm enjoying the odd

I'm enjoying the odd poetry.  Just in case it hasn't sunk in yet, Mudshow should be coming off as being mad as a hatter.

I might even part the veil a little.  In my campaign, there is a philosophy among some illithid, not universal by any means, but trancending creed, that is typified by the "poolers" in Sigil, as mentioned by Grazz the Accursed.  If anyone is familiar with the "hundredth monkey" idea, a part of chaos theory related in a way to the "butterfly theory" which is more well known.  Anyway, the idea concerns when a collection of variables becomes a self-sustaining system.  Say one monkey has an insight, like how a rock can be used to crack a nut, or how a stick can be modified to capture termites.  That monkey teaches it to a second monkey, who in turn teaches a third and a fourth, and so on.  At some point the "hundredth monkey" learns the technique, at which point enough monkeys in the population have learned the technique that they will pass it on to all the rest, and a cultural change will take place.

Back to the illithids now.  There is a school of thought in illithid society that could be called the "hundredth brain" phylosophy, though the illithid refer to it as the "potential" paradigm.  It revolves around the question of "when does a mass of illithid brains preserved in a brine pool become an elder brain?"  The idea is that, at some point, that "hundredth brain" is reached and what was just a collection of brains becomes a super-sentient being in its own right.  To take the idea up the heirarchy, when did (or rather will, for at this point we are no longer talking about a timeline but a time loop) the collected elder brains become the uber-sentience known as Ilsensene?  To the illithid, who are in their own way the ultimate narccisists, the logical answer is that each one holds within itself the potential to essentially BE Ilsensene, in a way.  Sort of.  Still, that's good enough for the 'thids and their egos.

Of course, the PCs wouldn't know any of this, having never talked with an illithid philosopher, but certain githyanki scholars and Silver Eyes have been clued in.  Their own theories have had a subtle influence on githyanki society.  Basicly this manifests as the idea that if at any point in time ALL illithid are slain, the future can be saved, but if even one survives somewhere, since they reproduce hermaphraditically, the illithid can rise from the ashes and once again ultimately conquor the multiverse.

Sorry, going to have to think about that before I post, which will probably be after work. Rest assured with a natural 20 Ii will certainly see something.

Also, with an electric arrow being shot into the water, everyone (except Ar'dru who is levitating above the water) will get at least some shock.

Once again, I'll game-post more tonight, but for now I've got to get ready for work.

Heya cutters!  Since

Heya cutters!  Since you're all such a hende bunch of planewalkers I was wondering if you could help me out?  I've been struggling to get the Planescape game I'm running again after I started working, and it would be a huge help to me if one and/or some of you could help me with a description of the interior of The Smoldering Corpse Bar.  I realized that I don't know what it looks like inside, and my mind has been feeling fried lately so I can't even come up with a description of my own.Frown

I'm going with after.  It doesn't need to be from Torment, though I suppose that would be a good source.  Really, I'd like to see other people's takes on it.

Knocked this together over

Knocked this together over lunch so it might not be great, let me know if you want me to do some more work on it or if you want to go in a different direction.

As a patron steps in from the organic reek of the hive into the flickering semi-darkness of the smouldering corpse bar the first thing that hits them is the heat of the place, though somewhat uncomfortable and smoky the hot, dry air is a welcome change from the perpetual grimy drizzle so common to the cage. One massive, blackened iron grate in the centre of the entryway seems to contain a tremendous fire-pit, the flames stopping just short of the metal. Oddly enough the stones surrounding the grate seem to have been somewhat melted at some point in the past from a intense heat coming from above rather than below. The main fire-pit is supplemented by a series of smaller pits dotted around the large entryway, providing illumination for the rest of the unlit establishment. The worst of the heat and smoke is carried out through several brass chimneys in the roof, cunningly crafted to avoid any intake of rainwater.

A new patrons gaze is often immediately captured by the perpetual illusion of a badly burned man, wreathed in flames who writhes in apparent pain as he hovers above the main pit. The illusion was installed by the proprietor a few years ago after business dropped off with the passing of the previous attraction.

The entryway is separated from the encircling taproom by a railing supported by bladed pillars as is the local style with three large, barbed arches allowing passage from one area to the other. The taproom is 3’ above the level of the entryway and grows progressively dimmer as one moves away from the flames. This area houses a scattering of sturdy tables for the mostly quiet crowd of beings who fill the bar. While the bar sees relatively little trouble (for a hive bar) the ambiance often attracts those of either a fiendish or a more reflective nature. The former because of the grisly nature of the bar’s namesake and the latter because said namesake tends to make the place unpopular with revellers who would disturb them. That being said the place has become a favourite spot for chant brokers and storytellers to ply their trade with the darkened corners providing both privacy and ambiance.

The bar itself sits towards the rear of the establishment and is managed by a surly, but well informed barkeep. The heated air usually caused patrons thirsts to build unusually quickly so the bar does a brisk trade and, like most Sigil bars it keeps itself stocked to cater to all but the most exotic of tastes.

No worries, Ii just mis-judged the distance/position and came down a few feet off-target.  On the up-side, she's in a position to save Ar'dru from drowning when she realizes he's not coming back up to the surface.

Ummm ,,, I dunno.  I never played Torment, nor do I have any products where I read a description of the Smouldering Corpse.  Az's description is great.  The only thing I could add I suppose is some clientelle.  I'd go for "spooky, scary, disturbing, but almost approachable."

- A pretty young woman with an eyepatch and a scar (Succubus?  You'd have to talk to her to find out.)

- A Dwarven warrior whose beard has been burned off and doesn't grow back

- A quasit crying into its drink.

- A dangerous-looking elf with a number of fairies on leashes.

- A Night Hag trying to drum up business (would have whater the PCs are looking for, or at least promises she can acquire it)

- A demon permanantly polymorphed into the form of ... (a talking dog, a black cat, a little girl, a 6-inch tall demon)

and, of course

- Rule-of-Three

Recalibrating

Recalibrating expectations... *click*

I wouldn't worry about the occasional lull in the game – I far prefer to take a breather once in a while for the sake of providing quality content, rather than stress overly and risk burnout (I know I've been there, as DM). Things slow down a bit during intense working/study periods and speed up during holidays.

Well, now the music isn't as loud, but you'd still have to shout (think concert).  Githyanki are adept at signing anyway, try the non-verbal comunication angle, I'm sure it'll be fun.

With Ar'dru and Ya'shenn

With Ar'dru and Ya'shenn soon burned out of psi-juice, I'm thinking it might be prudent to bring up an earlier suggestion of Du'minh's:

When we arrive at the Palace we could have our top-scouts from the two warbands track down and infiltrate a prime illithid storage warehouse to steal "psi-batteries" (don't remember what they were called) and possibly healing ressources. If time and situation allows, of course, since we don't know what the state of alert is like at the Palace yet.

Yes.  Soon, in fact.  After the current scene with Mudshow, the party will be in a place where it will be very easy to slip another character in.  If you've been reading earlier posts, you may know that the PCs will be meeting up with K'tch's strikeforce at the Palace.

Welcome to the group,

Welcome to the group, Bladedancer! Smiling

Remember your helmet, this game has things trying to eat your brain all the time! Actually, it would almost seem an obvious consequence that githyankis (especially on rrakkma) wear close-fitting helmets but I've never seen art depicting them as such. Perhaps a cultural thing? Perhaps they need their head somewhat exposed to use their natural psionics?. Nah, I'm guessing its more a result of the general trend in modern fantasy art that characters usually don't wear headgear that cover up their appearance too much. Sticking out tongue
