OK, my internet searching indicates that "300" showed gunpowder being used in the Battle of Thermopylae.

In, like, 480 BC. ~1200-1300 years before it was invented in China.

Ahahahahah hahahahah ahahaha heehehe ahaha.

Also, while the six-packs, naked chests, and loincloths are pretty to look at, I assume that the historical Spartans wore cuirasses. Laughing out loud

One of the players from my PSCS game here tried to watch 300, but had to stop the movie the third time the character of Leonides started spouting off about freedom. See, he knows to much about the actual history of Sparta, and believe me, 'freedom' wasn't high on their list, since they'd enslaved a whole people, the Helots.

I never expected Hollywood's adaptation of a comic book to be historicly accurate beyond three or four names used, so I liked it, but I also see his point.

Of course;
- 300 couldn't show a Spartan's real graduation from training to full citizen-warrior: sneaking out at night and murdering a Helot.
- The fact Athenian fleet won half that battle kind of takes away from the whole "heroic last stand", since they didn't stick around.
-So does the fact that the 300 Spartans brought about 1000 slaves with them, who were forced to stay.
-As many Greek city-states sided with the Persians as fought them, but boy doesn't that look bad.

Also;
- No movie about Pocahontas will ever show her getting sick and dying in England.
- No Hollywood depiction of the American Revolutiuon will ever mention the Cherry Valley Massacre, the starvation campaign against the Iroquois, Shay's rebellion, the Rent Wars, or anything else that makes the revolutionaries, or wealthy landowners, look bad.
- Nazis are always evil (OK, they were), but by extension that means all Americans are always good guys. (ummm, even the ones making a proffit off the Nazis, like George W. Bush's grandfather? His company supplied the Luftwaffe with jet-fuel addatives during the war .))

#$%^@ Hollywood. Seriously, I like foreign film. At least then you get to, one in a while, see a villian with more motivation than "I like doing Evil things because I'm an Evil person."

Fact is, I like history, I like inconvienient truths and I like characters with a little substance. Yes, even the bad guys. In fact my favorite movies are ones in which you can't point to one person and say "He's the villain."

Then again, any movie where they're shooting Nazis is OK by me too. Sticking out tongue

{EDIT} BTW I liked 300. The cinematography was awesome, and the end credits are the best part of the movie.

Wow, the portrayal of Xerxes in that movie is so... utterly bizarre. Even a little effort at historical accuracy would have helped a lot there. (He doesn't exactly seem to match the image of Xerxes as described by Herodotus...)

Yeah, such is Hollywood. History aside, it wasn't a bad film.

This proves my point, Zim, a Spartan would be smart and wear armor to an epic battle. an Australian wouldn't. Laughing out loud

It's a fun film to watch but it just causes pain and stupid arguments when you try to look too deep. Hopefully it'll encourage people to do some research into this period themselves.

From what I've gathered there wasn't a real 'uniform' at that point, more like guidelines. Since everyone had to provide their own gear there was a lot of variety in what was used.

Oh, and given the number of people around here from certain other large, western countries I wouldn't start throwing stones about the collective intellect of a nations army. Puzzled
(Our government just officially said sorry to our indigenous peoples today so I'm feeling rather patriotic).

It's self depreciating humor. I'm an Australian living in the States (I'd never poke fun at a country I'm not a citizen of. Luckily I'm a dual citizen, so the USA isn't exempt either).

I think that the Spartans would have been pretty well-equipped (ermm...the pun was unavoidable, sorry) by their city-state.

Yah, githyanki don't just walk into ghaik owned establishments wearing githyanki-made armor and weapons. Disguise is the skill you want, I think, but it'd probably border on impossible without magic with all of your gear (unless fighting ghaik without armor and big swords is fun, of course).

Idea: If nothing prevents it (anti-teleportation magics, anti-psi stuff), Ya'shenn might be able to send 'coordinates' for the heavy-armor folks to dimension door in, if the #$#$ hits the fan. Not sure what the odds of the brothel (the 'normal' part of the brothel, that is, not wherever the illithid lair inside it) having those kinds of defenses would be, though.

Sorry for the long absence, guys.

I’ve been writing on many projects lately relating to both studies and gaming, which might have put me into a sort of writer’s block lately. One thing that’s currently draining my creativity a lot is preparing the “final sessions” for a three year running campaign with my local group, along with a particularly tough course I’m following.

At any rate, I’m back now and will read up on the game and post very soon.

I've been wondering whether we can/should use the Quintessence dorje to freeze-dry the illithid heads, or how many charges it would use up.

It shouldn't be necessary. They just need enough of a mouth intact for the Speak With Dead spell to work, and it would take a very long time of rotting before that would become a problem. Well before that, we can ask Vivec to cast a Gentle Repose spell.

Also sounds like it would be an immense expenditure of charges, provided there're enough in the wand at all.

Yeah, I can see that.

Barring very specialized situations, though ("gotta protect this plot-significant signet tiny metal object when we go to fight the rust monster"), I wonder when people would actually use the Quintessence ability in a campaign? Most objects that are tiny enough to use Quintessence on aren't going to suffer very dramatically from the effects of time. Unless someone really minds it if a ring begins to tarnish (silver) or develop a patina (bronze).

You're right, I'm not seeing the wide applicability of this power either. Didn't know what it did in fact, until you mentioned it and I looked it up (then again, I've never read through a psionics book so I don't know any powers).

Perhaps when fighting pixies or other tiny people? Perhaps an arrow would stop mid-flight if flying into a glob of quintessence?

Ooh, ooh, I got it! Sneak a bit of quintessence into the snack of your enemy. Once he eats it, it'll slowly tear him apart from the inside because he's not fully enveloped!

"But Braaaaain, how are we going to get this quintessence inside the thrall's skull without the mind flayer noticing?"

"Using 400 pounds of tiny mithril darts, of course!"

"Uh, right..."

Cool

If nobody has anything more to contribute to the current scene, I'll advance the story. Thing is, if the party is going into battle, people need to post. Easiest thing would be for me to know when school vacations are, or midterms are over, or whatever. I'm in the middle of searching for a new job, myself, but can certainly check the post every other evening at least.

I've found that splitting the party is actually good for post-flow. Ar'dru is attacking by air, but there will be a little role-playing at the alchemist's shop to pick up his bombs. Du'minh and Ii are attacking via portal with Gy-Nath, so I can run their attack separately. Ya'shenn and Daraz are going to infultrate with their magical disguises, I'm assuming Ya'shenn will coach Daraz in how not to think about what they are going to do once they get inside, so that no illithid detecting thoughts will be tipped off.

I can kind of see this, since the less-frequent posters seem to post more when this happens. Sometimes it's good simply because the party's bloc affiliations are all over the map. I really don't like seeing the party split up every single time combat rounds are involved, though.

He has a ring of mind shielding. If it prevents a mindlink from working, wouldn't it bar detect thoughts, as well?

The interactions between magic and psionics (in 3e) depend a lot on the DM. The 3.0 PH even gives guidelines for 2 or 3 different takes on it. I wouldn't be surprised if 4e eventually ends up making the interactions between them more clear, though.

I'm usually good for daily posting, though I often wait for reaction/response if I'm latest to post or if I just can't think of some meaningful or relevant response to latest few posts.

Anyway, I will probably be less active up to and during the 4th and 5th March, since that is when I'm running the "final" session of my local RttToEE campaign.
