Re: Asylum Seekers

Umbrukh-Uma stands at the archway, her mind racing through the unpleasant possibilities and consequences. Of course, the moment she honestly, truly doesn't want the portal to open, it does! Quickly, the rest of the barmies stampede the portal before their own optimism can force it closed again ...

The group of Gatehouse refugees find themselves standing on a cobblestone street. It is foggy with a chilly drizzle none are actually dressed for. That the city is not Sigil is evident from the outset, since all the buildings are made from the same gray-black stone, as are the uneven and broken cobbles. Through the mists, they can see lights mounting up, up, up the slope of a dark mountain. Below them the city fans out, but the lowest portions are unlighted jumbles of ruined hovels. The party stands in an open archway in the side of the mountain. Behind them, stone stairs descend into the darkness of a cellar of some kind, the splintered remains of a rotted door scattered on the steps. Their archway is about a quarter of the way up the hill, and most of the city lies to their right when looking uphill.

Re: Asylum Seekers

The half-scro looks around, even sniffs the air. She seems happy to be out of the Gatehouse (and not in Pandemonium!)... though that doesn't mean that their new location is all sunshine and flowers. At least it's not some plane of intense fire, as far as she can tell.

One thing is particularly important to Umbrukh-Uma, though. In her world -- and not just for those who live in the rougher parts of Sigil, either -- one just doesn't go around unarmed, if it can possibly be helped. In fact that's a good way to get yourself scribed, going around without a decent chiv. The half-scro/tiefling looks around for anything that could conceivably be used as a weapon -- whether a hefty 'splinter' from the door, a heavy cobblestone, or even a rock.

[We'll try Spot and Listen checks, even though Uma has lousy modifiers for those... ]

Re: Asylum Seekers

Sruanaq comes through the portal like a wild animal released after a long captivity, her semi-catatonic state replaced by a nervous awareness. At first, she stands rooted, but glances here and there, sniffing at the air. Her senses, dulled for so long, now pierce the rain and mist. She notices the faint scents of the city; the rotting wood of the shattered door says that it has been broken a long time, and there is no smell of inhabitants within. The echoes of the party from below confirm it is empty space below. That trait is unlikely to be shared by the next doorway down. There, instead of a yawning portal in the side of the mountain, there is a small hut, only a few feet deep, built as a foyer for the cave behind. Further down the street, the slope becomes less severe, and the caves give way to actual buildings climbing the side of the mountain. In the other direction, the slope becomes rockier, with massive slabs of stone pierced by several dark caves.

Srua, looking in all directions like a bird, crosses the cobbled street. It is a wide shelf in the mountain, and at the other side there is an overhanging rock. Some twenty feet below, there are roofs of buildings. From this vantage, she can see more of the city. The opposite side is barely visible due to the curve of the hill, but she can see that it, too ends in great slabs, though the amount of light from that side suggests a working quarry. The burg is like an inverted fan, spreading out at the bottom and narrowing at the top to a fortified citadel at the peak. At the very top is a great black tower, barely visible against the dark sky except that a single orange light burns from a window at the very top.

Closer at hand, where the cave-pierced slabs and cliffs of the edge of town give way to buildings, there is a strong tower and a wall which continues across the hill. Similar towers along the wall's length block passage along each of the major streets that climb diagonally up the slope. The party themselves are down a side-street of sorts, less than a hundred feet from where one of these major streets goes around a switchback, and eventually climbs to the great doors of the second tower along the wall. Thus is the city divided into upper and lower sections, of which the party is in the lower.

Umbrukh-Uma mutters to herself, in a mixture of Planar Common and what the others might guess to be the scro language, as she picks up whatever pathetic rocks will have to do for now. If she should be lucky enough to have access to a belt pouch or possibly even a sock, she attempts to make a very improvised sap out of what little she has. You don't go around unarmed while you're planewalking. Whether she's successful at this task or not, she puts the rocks and/or improvised sap in pockets or similar places where it won't be immediately obvious that she's carrying a weapon. Even a hopelessly primitive one, which even an orc would be ashamed to be wielding.

The half-scro/tiefer looks in the direction that Sruanaq indicates. "I don't think you've introduced yourself yet, cutter. Mind sharing?"

Looking around some more: "Not sure we want to head for a fortress. Patrols, guards..."

She gestures toward the cellar. "I can go and give that a look first, if you don't mind." Uma's instincts are telling her to head down, not up. Those instincts also recommend avoiding fortresses in strange burgs. She wonders if her lack of fear of 'caves' has something to do with the orcish half of the family tree. Scro are a civilized lot, but still.

[Mmm, low Wisdom score. Plus I wouldn't mind a chance to see how Uma does on Hide/Move Silently checks.]

The scro-tiefer blinks. "Right. Being a Cager, this is awkward, but... what are you, anyway?"

Re: Asylum Seekers

"You've got scales, so yer all right wit me, sister" the half-dragon-half-kobold chimes in. "But yer right, what does it matter? What we are is FREE of that hell-hole." He looks up at the falling drizzle and catches some in his mouth.

Uma, now wearing one sock and wielding the other, takes a few steps down into the darkness, adjusting her darkvision to peer into the damp gloom. There is only the sound of slight trickles as little rivulets of water fall down the stairs. They seem rough and ill-maintained, but there are signs of passage; the centers of the top steps are worn, and stained from water and street-dirt.

Meanwhile, the others, still out in the rain, notice a figure walking up the street, approaching the intersection at the switchback of the main street. As he draws level with their side-street, he pauses. He seems to be catching his breath from the climb and produces a small stool from his robes on which he sits. He is dressed, as far as they can tell through the mist, in wizard's fashion, with a large-brimmed, high pointed hat, and leaning on a staff. Indeed, he didn't appear to have been carrying a stool up the hill. He soon notices the party, also out in the rain, and stares a bit.

Quite unaware of the party's new visitor, Umbrukh-Uma proceeds further into the tunnel, with some caution. She wishes she had a stick handy to check for tripwires, actually. She substitutes as well as she can with her improvised sap, carefully checking for traps of any sort as she heads further downward.

Re: Asylum Seekers

Na'Sahlih, while overjoyed to be free of the Gatehouse, is nevertheless more than a trifle uneasy at the presence of the newcomer. A test, perhaps? A decoy for an ambush? His altruism wins out and he decides he will address the man cautiously.

"Hail and well met." the githzerai calls out with a bow. "Are you a citizen of the town below? My comrades and I are presently stranded. I haven't planewalked in nigh over a decade, so I am unfamilliar with this location. If you are injured, I am a cleric and could heal you to a slight extent."

[Move Silently, Hide, and Search checks for Uma]

[Edit: Okay, I find the results of those rolls entertaining.]

Move Silently
I rolled 1d20.each(11), the result is 25 = 25.
Hide
I rolled 1d20.each(13), the result is 33 = 33.
Search
I rolled 1d20.each(2), the result is 3 = 3.

The person just stares for a few moments. He then takes out a long-stemmed pipe and proceeds to pack and light it. A few moments after he gets it going good, he stands back up and slips the stool into his robes (where it promptly disappears), and starts walking their way.

"Met well and Hail! My only malady is age, friend. Nothing a short rest and a smoke can't fix, temporarily at least. Welcome to MY city!" The manner in which he proclaims ownership is slightly unsettling, for his demeanor goes from friendly to deadly serious in an instant. He then, just as quickly, cracks a pleasant smile again.

Re: Asylum Seekers

"I am in fact the Mayor of this fine burg. Welcome, friends ... to ... to ... umm." The elderly mage (presumably, judging by the stunt with the stool), knots his brow and stammers, "To ... the city ... uh ... the best burg ever ... it just escapes me for the moment what it's called. Why, I've been the Mayor so long that it has been decades since I was anywhere other than here, and had to refer to the whole place by name! Usually I just say "I'm going over to Keystone Street" or "Have you seen Zorba?" "Yea, she's up at Goodmetal." you know?" He laughs nervously, embarrassed by his 'greybeard moment'.

By this time, Uma hears the sounds of conversation from the street.

At first, Umbrukh-Uma considers the idea of leaving this pack of barmies to their fate, whatever that might be. Then she recalls that, if it's wise not to walk the planes unarmed, it's also better not to do so alone. Retaining the stealth she had picked up over the course of years in Sigil's slums, the half-scro retraces her steps, taking care to remain within the shadows of the cave. She might be big, but Uma is quite good at remaining unseen, when she wants to be.

She's quickly glad that she had chosen not to reveal herself, when it becomes obvious that the newcomer is either a spellslinger, or some berk who really wants to look like one. The half-scro wonders if this old greybeard is a Prime: what self-respecting mage would dress like that?

She also wishes for a real weapon. Uma has no real desire to shiv this berk, but spellslingers are to be treated with caution.

[Keeping the results of Uma's move silently and hide rolls, if you don't mind, DM.]

Watching the old man from the shadows, Umbrukh-Uma takes the time to rack her brain for any knowledge concerning either this particular burg, or the supposed spellslinger himself.

[Bardic Knowledge checks below]

Bardic Knowledge - which burg is this
I rolled 1d20.each(3), the result is 10 = 10.
Bardic Knowledge - who's the greybeard
I rolled 1d20.each(3), the result is 5 = 5.
