Adventuring for Enlightenment?

So with planar adventures there's more to just adventuring for gold and power. The way I see it one of the big things I can see planar adventurers going after is the quest for enlightenment...

However enlightenment is different for each individual character... It's an intensely personal thing tied to the characters background and motivation, but from enlightenment what should a character get beyond something that fulfills a player's roleplaying satisfaction. Should it be more than just XP?

Maybe it's just me, being someone who's well-versed in White Wolf's Mage RPGs where power is tied to enlightenment, but what should a character get for pursuing enlightenment D&D style?

And what are some things that characters should have to do when pursuing enlightenment?

The factions are paths to enlightenment, of course. Any path to enlightenment should probably be a sect or faction in Planescape.

Factions are just one way for a bunch of somewhat similarly minded people, but enlightenment itself is always an individual path. And I definately see many diverging from their faction at some point...

There's quite a lot of variation in the various paths trod and beliefs adhered to within just a single faction.

The Factions are successful as they can encompass a spectrum of beliefs centred on some key concepts. However, each person will have to follow their own path (unless they're in the Harmonium faction Sticking out tongue )

In my view the Factions are readily accessible belief systems and so good starting points to develop a path to enlightenment along. However, there's nothing stopping a character from plotting their own course and developing in a different way.

Some paths such as those on Mount Celestia and in Baator are physical paths and roadways to enlightenment at the same time. Other paths are not as obvious and one of the main elements of fun in a Planescape in my opinion is watching the characters (and players) develop as the campaign unfolds.

If you want a character to have a completely unique approach to enlightenment, more power to you, but I suspect that if you succeed (or even if you don't), there's always going to be opportunists who will start a sect based on you. In Planescape, anyway.
