Adventure 2# The King of the Hive

Here's my basic outline for adventure 2, I think it's more or less complete. I also have the idea for Po Ji in my head.

Personally, it'll be interesting to do up encounters with interesting NPCs or any of the detailed NPCs but Po Ji and Vartus Timlin. Someone doing a write-up of Coaxmetal or the Bladelings and their personalities would be helpful.

Or perhaps Lightbringer.

Adventure 2# Outline: The Lord of the Hive

Aola contacts the player characters in disguise and basically desires their help in recovering an object that has been stolen from him. A former member of the Athar, apparently having reconsidered his beliefs and becoming a convert to "A new Faith" (Aoskar), was bringing him a important object (fruit from the Bois Verdurous).

The Athar member was, unfortunately, a man of untrustworthy character and ended up getting himself stabbed to death by a Hive Thug that was in the employ of Vartas Timlin with all of his possessions taken to that man. Aola regrets the death of his man but is more concerned about the recovery of his object and hopes the PCs as reasonably tough individuals will be able to either coerce Vartus Timlin into turning over the fruit by force or taking payment for it.

Aola is willing to compensate the PCs handsomely for it and also offers to treat their wounds in any future encounters for free (right up until the DM chooses to run the final encounter of this adventure module).

If the PCs come to meet Vartus Timlin, they find themselves facing a profoundly arrogant but powerful crime lord who has the power to enforce his decisions. Vartus Timlin will suggest that he's willing to give on the Bois Verdurous if they can resolve a problem for him. Nothing TOO criminal. Basically, there's a holdup on Vartus' order for a new sword at the Foundry (The Old Godsman HQ).

Vartus wants the sword and wants it now.

I'm debating an attack during the meeting as well, lead by the Swordsage Monk Po Ji. It's not meant to be a fight to the death. If the PCs stop to talk with him (he's not trying to kill them) then will learn Vartus Timlin is afraid of the Monk seeking revenge for a past wrong he's done against him.

The Sword is something Vartus believes will give him an edge against Po Ji in a duel.

Back at the Foundry, the Bladelings have recently had their previous leader perish. Now, the Clan that runs the Foundry is divided into two groups fighting over who will be the new Clan Lord. The PCs can support one side or the other (I'm inclined to have one side supporting free commerce in murderous weaponry while the other side supports selling weapons exclusively to the Blood War----a sort of "which is worse" dilemna) or they can free the giant Coaxmetal whose kept in the Foundry.

If they do the later then the Giant will finish the sword for them.

True to his word, Vartus Timlin honors the deal. Also, the PCs can hold back on the sword and let Po Ji attack Timlin when he comes to pick up the sword. Po Ji will hand over the fruit if he kills Timlin.

Now with that in mind, I just have to deal all the various factions, NPCs, and descriptions.

Adventure 2# The King of the Hive

Vartus Timlin "The Lord of the Hive"

Chaotic Neutral Human Male [Planar] 18th Level Fighter

Str 20
Dex 18
Con 15
Int 16
Wis 14
Chr 18

HP 105

AC 24

Equipment: Amulet of Protection (Fated Faction Symbol) +2, Bracers of Defense +4, Dagger +2, Leather Armor +2, "Lightbringer" (+2 Longsword of Quickness with a Continual Light spell on it), Ring of Protection +2

Appearance: Vartus Timlin is a beautiful golden skinned man with blonde hair that most assume to have some Celestial blood in him. It's almost certain that he comes from the Upper Planes somewhere since no human being should be that perfect (in truth, Vartus comes from the Hive and just happens to have been born with exceptional good looks amongst his other qualities).

Personality: Vartus Timlin isn't sadistic and monstrous like some of the Hive residents but he is arrogant beyond belief with a tendancy to peel a cutter for all that he's worth. Vartus' one weakness is flattery and anyone whose sufficiently impressed by his grandeur (or pretends to be) has a far more likely chance of getting away with their valuables intact after dealing with him.

Vartus isn't stupid and will avoid direct confrontation with anyone who could seriously hurt him, despite being damn near invincible, and will probably attempt to deal with anyone of such power by offering to hire them for his 'empire.' Fundamentally, despite his awesome sword skills and leadership potential, Vartus Timline is a bully and a braggart.

History: Vartus Timlin is the former Factol of the defunct Expanionists, an organization of berks devoted to the idea of expanding their own power at all costs. Vartus lured countless individuals into his Faction by promising them gold, power, and wealth while playing everyone in the city against the other. One of these individuals was the bride of the Ortho swordsman, Po Ji. Vartus seduced her and used her before sacrificing her in one of his many chess moves against rival factions in the city.

In the end, much like the late and unlamented Duke Rowan Darkwood, Vartus Timlin attempted to challenge the Lady of Pain and ended up paying the price by consignment to the Mazes for six centuries. Vartus Timlin only managed to stay sane by sheer force of will, but the events still left lasting scars on his consciousness.

Vartus eventually escaped his imprisonment with the aid of a set of Clueless and some well-meaning planars. However, the experience has left an undeniable mark on the leader. Shunned by most of Sigil's populous as a figure who incurred the Lady's wrath, he's also a pariah amongst his newly adopted Faction in the Fated given the similiarity of his own plans to Duke Darkwood's disastrous attempted takeover of Sigil.

Vartus has since managed to play his own natural charisma, physical power, and the mystique he gained from 'defying the Lady' to establish himself as a Hive crime Lord. Over the past few months following the Faction War, he's managed to annex over a dozen gangs into his service and several vice dens. Vartus doesn't quite have a stranglehold on the Hive just yet but already people are starting to talk about him as the ruler.

Vartus' acquisition of a Bois Verdurous fruit has given him what he percieves to be leveridge for influencing the upcoming conflict with the Lady of Pain and Aoskar. Unfortunately, old sins are long remembered and Vartus is currently being hunted by one of the few beings in the planes who might be able to take him in a fight.

Motivation: Vartus is currently building up his gang, one agent at a time, while working to make whatever deals are necessary to make him a serious force in Sigil. The Factions won't touch him but he's already got notable guild members on his payroll and quite a few Sigil informants have standing offers to bring him anything important. Vartus doesn't intend to get dumped in the Mazes again but taking over one Ward at a time is just *too* tempting. Some people just never learn...

DM's Note: Vartus Timlin first appeared in the Planescape mega-module Well of Worlds

Adventure Background

Six hundred years ago, Vartus Timlin was the most powerful man in Sigil and the Expanionists were a Faction that dominated most of the others through bribery and intimidation. The Expanionist Factol had dreams of using Sigil as his base for launching a series of conquests throughout the Multiverse and ultimately holding most of the universe hostage through the control of its portals. The Expanionist head even dreamed of gaining the aid of several powers in order to bind the Lady of Pain to do his bidding.

Vartus Timlin's ambitions came to nothing in the end. Vartus was cast into the Mazes and the Expanionists immediately degenerated into civil war over who would hold the crown next. The chaos was enough that the Lady of Pain made the decree of banishing all but a handful of Factions from Sigil. This became known as the Great Upheaval and is still infamous as one of the most important events to occur in the cities' history.

Somewhat lost in the backstory of this event is the story of Motoko Ji. Motoko Ji was a plane walker of moderate skill whose chief claim to fame was that she was the wife of a god's proxy from Ortho. Motoko became enamoured of Vartus Timlin and abandoned her husband to take up the cause of the Expanionists. Ultimately, Motoko ended up being sent to assassinate a group of Baatezu that clearly overmatched her but whom Vartus Timlin intended to manipulate into a larger scheme. Motoko died without Vartus knowing much more about her than her name.

Unfortunately, for Vartus, Motoko Ji is still remembered quite strongly by her husband. Po Ji, the Chosen of the goddess Jislana, is widely believed to be the best warrior on his homeworld and is certainly nothing to sneeze at in Sigil. Being immortal thanks to the infusion of divine essence, Po Ji is still alive after six hundred years and remembers Vartus Timlin's causal disposal of his wife quite clearly. Vartus Timlin, recently escaped from the Mazes thanks to some well-meaning bashers, is personally powerful enough to dispose of nearly any potential assassin. Unfortunately, again for Vartus, Po Ji is just strong enough that he's not sure who would come out in a fight between them.

Vartus Timlin didn't get to be Factol of the Expanionists by being a fool though. Rather than waste money by sending a small legion of outclassed berks against Po Ji, he's decided to buy himself a weapon that'll even up any contest that might emerge between them. The sword, Lightbringer is a signature weapon of Vartus but he's actually wielded several with the name. The latest one that he's comissioned from the Voshkyk Bladeling clan is the most powerful version yet. Once Vartus gets his hands on it, he'll be strong enough to take on Po Ji in a fair fight (not that he'd fight that way he didn't have to).

This plan probably would have worked out well if not for picking the wrong time to comission a sword from the Bladelings. The Old Clanlord, Voshkyk the Slicer of Wrists, has just died by an accidental overdose of Acheron Mercury Wine (a taste that would kill anyone in sufficient quantities). His two heirs, Vospal the Storm of Razors and Vollpp the Breather of Knives, are now feuding over who will get to take his place. No work, new or old, is getting done as the Foundry has been reduced to an armed camp between the two feuding siblings and their supporters.

All of this intersects with the Illuminated Eye thanks to a drunken Tiefling gambler of all things. Great Gorby, a part-Yugoloth, is a member of the Illuminated Eye that converted to the faction from the Athar after regaining his faith. This almost immediately put him on the bad side of the Godless and it wasn't helped by the fact that he helped himself to a couple of relics, including a Fruit from the sacred Bois Verdurous tree. In the end, some Defier thugs of Vartus Timlin ended up knifing him under the excuse that he owed them money (which he probably did). Riffling the man's pockets, they made off with the Fruit amongst some other values.

Aola has since become aware that the Fruit is necessary for his resurrection of Aoskar. If the PCs have completed adventure one of the Module, then he's probably heard of them from there. If not, then he's simply heard of them from another source. Aola will claim that Great Gorby was bringing him the fruit and will reward the PCs handsomely if they can get it from Vartus Timlin. What seems to be a simple job is likely to get much more complicated in the meantime....

Question, which I only ask because adventurers tend to be notoriously greedy, what are the stats on the sword that is being commissioned? If his current weapon is a +2 Longsword of Quickness, and his new weapons is meant to be significant more powerful (enough to 'give him an advantage') than the sword would probably be worth no small amount. Putting that sort of item in the PC's hands is just begging them to find a way to keep it.

Good point.

Two options.

1. Yes, they can in fact keep Lightbringer as a weapon. It would be part of the potential "loot" for the adventure.

2. Lightbringer is specifically made for Vartus Timlin and is only a minor weapon by comparison when wielded by someone else.

(though we could suggest that that the blade is capable of having its full power awakened)

My personal inclination is that the Blade is a +4 or 5 Defender or similarly strong weapon, possibly with some other quality (Quickness or Smiting). I'm open to suggestions personally of what is realistic. It only needs to be a slight advantage for it to work.

Could it be a wepon of legacy?

Interesting suggestion, but it's just a newly forged weapon for Vartus' use.
